Emotional Response starts 2017 with a mini-album of ambient-equatorial enlightenment by Australia’s mysterious Tropical Hi-Fi. The final record from an artist appearing on the label’s Schleißen series, this also points to the future.

Based somewhere in the far flung Northern Territories, the music of Hi-Fi’s pre-incarnation Electric Egypt was first discovered via the note-worthy airwaves of L.A’s outstanding Dublab radio station.

As the wonderfully diverse internet shows and project’s dense, hip-hop inspired collages came to fruition with 2012’s Exotica release, a dual awareness and sporadic contact was maintained whenever a signal could be established with Hi-Fi base camp. As the Schleißen series was formed, the studio-DJ-cut-up-mix of Oceanic Mythology was warmly received as an inspired counterpoint to the dense offering from Don’t DJ.

These first real solo recordings from the Hi-Fi crew - whoever he/she/they maybe - moves on from the cut’n’paste of Electric Egypt to seek a meditative vision.

Ambient, drone and field recordings are all part of a drifting tropical flavour that encompasses the listener. Music truly inspired by it’s surroundings, this is not some music journal, flying in to sample a life and it’s sounds, but the real, living entity and it can be heard deep across 8 short pieces.

None is more typified than here with Tahiti Blue, where fellow traveler Mike Cooper layers his ubiquitous steel blues over simple, lilting drums.

"Ethnosound of various geographical spaces (in particular, Afro-Voodoo-Arab) always works as a source of inspiration. Now I am working hard on the project, which consists in “introducing” cymbals (Belarusian folk instruments) into electronic music, and this already looks like a search for a Belarusian ethnic group.
I especially like to extract sounds from everything related to the microphone)
As for this track, this is my first release. Everything is recorded in my home studio (drums, pipes, harp ..). The track was created quickly: in a few weeks,  with inspiration from afro music and this atmosphere

The first album to be completed fully after I left Finland for the Netherlands. I was living in the more rural parts of Holland for a while, spending a lot of my time bicycling and foraging in the woods at night. I discovered that the man-made nature of this country is both beautiful and frightening in equal amounts; at some times seeming like a kafkaesque tale of ecological horrors, and others a poetic struggle against the forces of nature by the will of the settlers. 

The album was recorded entirely in one evening after carefully constructing a set of constraints for the sounds and structure, tying the four songs together to tell a story of one evening in the Netherlands. Recommended listening for bicycling, driving, on the train, meditating, sleeping, making love or other moments of shifting focus.

With Music For Dreams collectors’ series, we aim to bring you something a little out there. After eclectic contributions from Jan Schulte, Moonboots and most recently Basso, we’ve lent the slot to DJ soFa. As always, he’s been granted supreme curatorial sovereignty, and trust us, he’s held us to our word on that one. 

On this double LP, the Belgian sonic globetrotter takes us on a galactic joyride through the mystifying reality of childhood - and a trip, it is. While soFa has had a soft spot for these obscure children’s pieces for a large part of his life, the compilation itself has been 2.5 years in the making. 

That’s time spent handpicking old pieces and producing new ones with young collaborators, mostly by means of analogue synthesizers and vintage drum machines. Two tracks on here, the ones by Zahn and Oslo Karamell, are in fact creations of parent/child collaboration. 
The result is a thematically and sonically homogenous collage of cosmic children’s music. Full of synaesthetic curiosities, it immerses the listener in all kinds of creative ways, nudging you down hidden experiential pathways. It’s both hyperreal and magical, with important lessons for young and old alike in an increasingly disenchanted world.

soFa starts us off with Milo Kolarov’s interpretive exercise in sonic imagery ‘Analogue Beam’, a story about animal characters, presented to us as distinct motifs of bleeps and blitzes. Next up is the surreal jigsaw puzzle dub ‘Totti und Pippo’ by Jah Limonardi Und Die Kleine Gräfin Dubski. Here, we come bouncing on giant, iridescent mushrooms, lulled deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole by incantations of a child’s voice.
‘Der Kleine Roboter’ by Volkers Musikspiele gives us a classroom choir performing a cheerful verse about being little robots, suspended beneath the droning of an icy locomotive synth. Two layers, subverting and transmuting each other.
On the B- and C-side, our host for the hour spins us into a 16-bit midi mania straight outta the 90’s Nintendo-sphere. Palla Templouf’s ‘Ping en Keun’ evokes the ominous mood of unknown threats lurking behind every corner, while Jan Turkenburg’s ‘In Hyperspace’ takes us through uncharted galaxies searching for lost space-treasures.
Rounding off, ‘Pêle-Mêle’ twists a non-sense nursery rhyme mantra around a trudging bassline, while Thomas Natschinksi’s ‘Robotertanz’ returns to the robot-theme in a 70’s-inspired, hypnagogic space-funk-ballad. One of the few songs on the compilation that actually sounds like something out of the vast rock-pop continuum we’re familiar with.

Mameen 3 are soFa and Cheb Runner from Brussels. Both versatile players in the rather niche scene of oriental electronic music in the European capital, they only ran into each other at the Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda two years ago. They clicked and after a first jam session they immediately launched Mameen 3.

Cheb Runner is the young Moroccan producer previously known as Gan Gah, now focussing on giving a modern outfit to various MENA music traditions. soFa is a true digger between all crates (his Pingipung Podcast is a gem!), as well as the curator behind the highly recommended Elsewhere vinyl compilations, released on labels such as Emotional Response or Music For Dreams. Following the Mameen 3 debut singles on Bongo Joe with excellent spaced out reggae-disco hybrids, Pingipung proudly unearths the Collapse EP featuring two collabs with legendary musicians.

"Impostrazione" is a collaboration with Claudia Radulescu and Walter Hus. Radulescu is a Romanian visual artist who has written the lyrics for the song, boldly interpreted by the legendary Walter Hus on the occasion of her exhibition 'Hit' in Kanal - Centre Pompidou Brussels in 2019.
Hus gained international reputation as a pianist in the 1980s and works as an avantgarde composer today, among many projects he created an opera for the graphic novel “Lint” by Chris Ware. Walter Hus performs an effusive vocal style accompanied by his modified Decap organ which became his trademark sound in the past decade. This jam delivered the material which Mameen 3 subsequently transformed into a hypnotic oriental slow-mo banger.
