This track was created for the 2018 Spring Soundwalks, hosted by Vancouver Soundwalk Collective and Vancouver New Music and held in the Powell and Victoria area of East Vancouver. Participants walked while listening to the audio collage 'If You Lived Here' by Danica Evering and Helena Krobath.

If You Lived Here (East Van Soundwalk)

Erin Gee leads the listener in a first-person roleplay as a specialist of a new experimental neural treatment: language processing and deprocessing. After a brief testing of equipment and EEG monitoring, Gee reads out the processes of a long-short term memory algorithm as it "learns" language from the classic book of passions gone awry, "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Brontë. This exposure to machined-evolution of linguistic patterns is intended to reset or recalibrate human linguistic patterns in your brain, offering a form of abstracted, deep tissue neural "massage".

'Vacancy control' is used as a scare word by real estate spokespeople and large-scale landlords -- but what does it mean? 

Vacancy control is a rent control measure that protects tenants in neighbourhoods being gentrified by apartment speculators. It takes away incentive for landlords to keep turning over tenants ('tenant flipping') the way they can now with rents tied to each lease.

In this piece, we argue that choosing rent controls that protect tenants is an immediate step we can take. (Or, you know, develop social housing for everyone!).

The VTU Podcasters are a team of VTU members and volunteers who  explore renters' issues and stories through audio storytelling.

If housing is treated as a money-maker, affordability will keep floating out of reach. What does affordable mean to you? 

Note that in Vancouver, the word 'affordable' has lost all meaning.

A is for affordable. . . ?

At the VTU General Meeting, a member talked to me about his experience with a mobile park landlord. When the tenant fell behind in rent more than a month, the landlord decided to throw him out by hand, rather than following the eviction procedures outlined in the mobile home act. The tenant, who also relied on a mobility aid, describes how it felt to face threats of violence and why he's happy with his new situation ~ interview by Helena Krobath
