Eric grew up in southwest Florida in a very musical Baptist family. At an early age he discovered skateboarding, and this became his foundation and community for music, art and fashion. One thing led to another, and after playing various instruments in different bands in his early 20's he found himself tending bar at a club in London. It was there that he discovered contemporaries that allowed him to expand his ideas of music from acoustic to electronic.

Now in Brooklyn, he feels like he his surrounded by more talented people than ever before. He and his high-school buddy John Petro play together in a electronic-based project called Mariner.  He is inspired by people, ideas and endeavors that traverse the spectrum - those that cross through genre and subvert expectation.

Nous'klaer Radio #28 - Mattikk

When she gets on stage, Mexico-born Vienna-based producer Alyssa Auvinen Barrera becomes LDY OSC. A frontier-busting scrambler of sines by trade, Alyssa began her musical journey in the late '90s when she felt a connection to the heavier industrial sounds. By 2007 she was immersed in electronic music and soon turned her sights toward DJing. After learning electronic music production techniques, Alyssa moved to NYC in 2010 to attend university, graduating with a BFA in Liberal Arts and Science with a Major in Music and Sound Engineering. While in University her classmates called her Lady Oscillator because she was into the study of synthesis and DIY synth culture. 

She has long been taking part in synth-punk/wave projects such as Artefactos De Dolor - alongside Todd Sines and Archetype - whose debut LP 'La Niña' came out earlier in 2019, LDY OSC is now spreading her wings as a solo artist. After releasing the single 'OAO' on The Bunker New York 15-year anniversary compilation, quickly followed by her first solo effort on the label, 'Magic² of 8' EP, in 2018, Alyssa made a further impactful impression with 'sōt', issued via Swedish label, Kontra-Musik, and which could be presented as the "dub version of the Chernobyl meltdown".

Showing a much different facet of her craft, LDY OSC’s own take at the dance and festival-oriented music continuum can be heard on her upcoming 'Electric-Earthy-Esoteric' EP, to be released on c.l.a.w.s and Solar’s label, Squirrels on Film.  A citizen of the universe to its widest extent, just as comfortable incorporating foreign cultures and languages into her art as she is toying with the semantics of analogue music, LDY OSC is just getting started.

When she is not making music for night clubs and electronic music oriented events, Alyssa dedicates her time to teaching Barre and hosting  meditations using oscillators and other instruments used for sound healing. Her sound therapy techniques incorporate her extensive knowledge with music, tuning, and voice training. As well as incorporating body movements into her practice to further release tension in the body. Before her musical career Alyssa studied Physical Therapy in college and studied health sciences extensively. The workshop that she presents varies in format and can be presented in many different settings.

Deep Breakfast 069 - LDY OSC

For the 47th instalment of the Mosaic Mix Series we head down under for a deep and dubbed out mix of techno and house from Echo Inspectors.

The duo consists of Mark Baumann and Lance Harrison, two seasoned campaigners in the dub techno scene in Australia who run the highly regarded Primary Colours Label. 

As well as their self released records they have had a multitude of releases and remixes over the years on labels such as ETUI Records, Stardub, Silver Ash and Blueten, whilst also being remixed by dub techno royalty including Luke Hess, Salz, Dean DeCosta, Resoe, CV313, Bluetrain, Mike Schommer, Knowone and Star Dub.

This past February, MEMCO and WCBN organized a Black History Month Symposium featuring a panel of three prolific Detroit-based producers, DJs, and activists. During the conversation, each panelist used their own experience to contextualize the emergence of Detroit techno, the music’s DIY ethos, and the ways in which the music inspires their work today. Introductory comments by MEMCO co-president Jordan Stanton ('19-'20).

“Mad” Mike Banks
Mike Banks is a Detroit-based DJ, producer, and founding member of the Underground Resistance (UR). He currently lives in Detroit, Michigan and is a former studio musician, having played with Parliament/Funkadelic among others. He worked in the second half of the 1980s with the collective Members of the House, releasing several 12" singles. In the late '80s he and Jeff Mills formed UR as an uncompromising, independent outlet for music imbued with a critical edge and an often futurist outlook. Together with Mills, Banks built UR into an internationally recognized and respected name. He is also the owner of Submerge Distribution, an independent record label which distributes Detroit-based techno worldwide.

Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale
Stacey “Hotwaxx” is a DJ and producer who has been deeply embedded in Detroit’s dance scene since 1989. She was a mainstay on the radio stations in the mid to late 80s, including WLBS, WHYT, WDRQ and WJLB, and won the Motor City Mix contest 10k prize. Stacey has been featured on numerous Internet radio shows and is currently featured on www.deepspaceradio.com. She currently teaches and designs DJ & production classes with Spin Inc, Girls Rock Detroit (GRD) camp, Give A Beat, Seraphine Collective, and Detroit Students of the Arts (DSA). Hotwaxx also formed a live music group, Nyumba Muziki, which has performed at the Charles H Wright Museum of African American History, and for the Detroit 300 Conservancy.

Ron Johnson (DJ Jungle 313)
Ron is a native Detroit DJ and educator who recognized a vital need to fill the creative gaps left by the public-school system’s abandonment of an arts curricula. He is committed to empowering disadvantaged youth and at-risk communities with music that inspires. He is the executive director of Spin Inc, a 501(c)(3) organization providing DJ and Music production education for young adults in Detroit. He is also a core organizer of the annual Detroit Electronic Music Camp (DEMC) that takes place during Movement.

Theory Therapy - July 2020

One of @jossymitsu's skills is her versatility. She was born and raised in Birmingham before moving to London, so has been exposed to, and immersed in, a wide array of scenes. From jungle to 2step, techno to house, rave to leftfield, she has knowledge of it all and never fails to throw it down in electrifying style. Her Rinse FM radio show has proved that over the last few years, and earlier this year the 6 Figure Gang associate made her production debut on Astral Black's Frass FM compilation with the brilliantly bumping 'Whirl.'

That track's cavernous bass and sparse late night atmosphere also characterises this week's mix. It's a selection filled with broken beats and metallic hits that lurch through desolate landscapes. As much as she can nail an absorbing atmosphere, Mitsu also knows just how to raise the levels by banging through flailing jungle, wild rave and blistering techno. But whether the hits are crisp and the kicks taught, swampy synths and low end wobble blast from the speakers or dark and dirty breaks bust out of the mix, this is pure body music that cannot fail to ignite your dancing spirit.

Before COVID 19 dominated our lives it used to be socially acceptable (encouraged?) for a couple hundred people to be sweating on top of each other at 6 a.m on a Salford industrial estate, how times have changed.

At the start of the year after a couple months of touring i felt like i had managed to build up a specific aesthetic with my djing that this club set captured pretty well. Those closing hours of the party are often the ones I feel most comfortable in and The White Hotel is probably the best venue in the country, these factors combined made this show my favorite of 2020 (all 3 months of it) 

We managed to get the first couple hours of my set recorded so here is an excerpt from the evening.

White Hotel Feb 2020

Italian-Dutch composer Aimée Portioli (@grandriver) is part of a new breed of artist who is meticulous in the way she sculpts and designs her sounds. Along with the likes of Donato Dozzy and Neel - who run the Spazio Disponibile label she debuted on in 2017, and returned to in 2018 with first album Pineapple - she imbues her deep rhythms with ambient beauty, classical minimalism and a real sense of symphony. She is a poly-instrumentalist who mixes tradition and formality with contemporary experimentalism, and also runs her own label One Instrument, releases on Ghostly and Longform Editions, and is an occasional A/V performer who is at home at the world's most avant garde clubs and festivals.

This week, Grand River takes us on an ambient journey as meandering and meditative as her alias suggests. It's a study in absorbing sparsity, where beautiful drones are layered up next to rippling chords. Found sounds drift in and out of ear shot and delicate keys turn into vast walls of ominous sound. The whole mix is like a melting glacier, in constant but subtle motion that leaves you in an utterly different place from where you started.

Ich stehe auf dem Brückenkopf meines Kreuzers, blicke durch die meterhohe Glasfront und genieße die schier unendliche Weite des Weltalls. Hier im Kommandozentrum herrscht ein reger Betrieb. Bewaffnete Soldaten laufen umher wie aufgeschreckte Ameisen, Offiziere geben Anweisungen, alles und jeder macht sich bereit zur Verteidigung. 
Auf dem Monitor vor mir tauchen wie aus dem Nichts kleine rote Punkte auf. Ich bleibe ruhig und versuche mir meine Anspannung nicht anmerken zu lassen. Trotz der geheimdienstlichen Informationen die uns zugesandt wurden, bin ich über die Flottenstärke der „Unionstreitkräfte“ entsetzt. Sie haben gut drei Mal soviele Schiffe wie wir. Darunter schwere Angriffskreuzer, Dreadnoughts und einige Corvetten, um ihre Flanken zu sichern. Die Gesamtzahl ihrer Sternenjäger lässt sich nur grob abschätzen. 
Unsere Flotte besteht aus dem Flaggschiff, der Goldfinger und zwei weiteren mittelschweren Fregatten. Ich gebe dem nächstgelegenen Admiral ein Zeichen und folgende Anweisung: Alle Maschinen auf Verteidigungskurs, volle Energie in die Schildgeneratoren und Protonentorpedos einsatzbereit machen. Er nickt und gibt die Befehle weiter. Kurz darauf öffnen sich mit einem ohrenbetäubenden Krachen und leichtem Quietschen die Schotten für die Jägerstaffeln. Ich sehe durch die Frontscheiben wie sich die geflügelten Gefährte in das Vakuum erheben. Unsere fünf Staffeln ergeben in Summe eine Bienenschwarm gleiche Prozession aus Stahl, Aluminium und Laserkanonen. 
Die feindliche Flotte befindet sich mittlerweile in Sichtweite, ihr Ausmaß ist gigantisch. Der gesamte Horizont füllt sich kontinuierlich mit Schiffen, welche wie hungrige Hyänen nur darauf warten zuzuschlagen. Ich mache auf dem Absatz kehrt und überblicke meine Mannschaft auf der Brücke. Angst & Panik liegen in der Luft und machen mir das Atmen schwer. Wie ein nächtlicher Schatten legt sich das Unbehagen, langsam aber sicher auf mein Gemüt. Bevor ich in einen Zustand völliger Paralyse verfalle, beginne ich zusprechen. Meine Worte werden an alle Mitglieder unserer Flotte übertragen, egal ob sie sich in einem der Jäger, Fregatten oder der Goldfinger befinden. Aus den Lautsprechern & Comlinks ertönt meine Stimme: Unsere Lage erscheint auf den ersten Blick aussichtslos. Die Truppen der Union sind uns haushoch überlegen. Doch wir haben etwas, dass viel wichtiger als reine Truppenstärke ist. Wir kämpfen um unser Leben, das Leben unserer Frauen & Kinder und das Schicksal der gesamten Galaxis. Was haben wir nicht schon alles durchgestanden auf dieser Reise, haben schier unbezwingbare Feinde in die Flucht geschlagen und mehr Bewohnern die Freiheit geschenkt, als wir uns jemals hätten träumen lassen. Lasst uns noch einmal allen Mut, jegliche Motivation und Grips zusammen nehmen und denen ein für alle mal zeigen, dass wir unsere Freiheit über alle Maßen schätzen.

Heute haben wir nach längerer Zeit wieder einmal Hildesheimer zu Gast. Butze & Erase sind zwei waschechte KataHaifisch Artists und präsentieren uns wie gewohnt, ein kraftstrotzendes Techno Set. Der Sound ist brandaktuell und trifft wie die Faust aufs Auge, den Zahn der Zeit. Füllige Kicks, scharfe Synths und treibende Hats erschaffen eine wahrhaftige Klangekstase für Technoliebhaber.

KataHaifisch Podcast 165 - Butze & Erase

It seems a long time ago since we kicked off our mix series in the summer of 2017. An off-the-cuff raw mix recorded in Matt HDC's flat, where he mixed b2b with Ben Rothes as so many a party had shaped out.  We are now half-way to a century in the series and we knew we had to mark the milestone with an extra special guest. We couldn't think of anyone better than one of our all-time favourites, Violet.

Inês is a rare breed of DJ and producer who has no limits in dance music. Founder of Portuguese based Rádio Quântica in 2015, she since went on to start her own Naive record label which has gained wide respect with their take on twisted electronics with releases from the likes of Octo Octa, Eris Drew, Photonz, as well as her own productions.  Violet has also worked alongside labels such Dark Entries, Snuff Trax and featured on Hilltown Disco's, Angel Series.   Her live and DJ sets have seen her boss the infamous Voodoo Stage at Dekmantel Selectors, Lente Kabinet and a (pre-covid) busy touring schedule, as well as an ongoing residency on Rinse FM.

Inês is one of the sweetest people we've had the pleasure of working with at Hilltown Disco. Her work ethic and energy set the bar high for all labels, DJ's and producers. Be more like Inês!

It's with real joy that we're able to press play on another epic journey from our favourite Aarhus collective, with Milán Zaks aka @s-p-o-r-t-s from the Regelbau crew stepping up this time for two-hours of mind massaging atmospheres, mixing sci-fi ambience with his signature floaty house, deep jungle and bass heavy UKG.

An incredible producer with an ever growing swarm of aliases, labels (No Hands, Help Recs, Regelbau) and collaborative projects to his name – often featuring alongside his brother Natal aka @central8000 – Sports is a music lover to his absolute core and a keen student of electronic music history with a brilliant ear for everything from ambient, dub, downtempo, pop and kraut to house, techno and the faster bass heavy sounds of dubstep, UKG, jungle and DnB.

We're lucky enough to get tastes across the entire spectrum in this mix, and checked in with Milán for an extended chin wag about everything from discovering jungle and UK bass music to the beauty of DIY recordings, the underground scene in Aarhus and the Regelbau approach to programming a night from beginning to end.

Mysteries — as fans lovingly call it — is concerned with exploration of unknown realms, and its focus, in addition to showcasing a dynamic spectrum of electronic music from foremost artists in the field, is to thoughtfully engage its audience. 

Conceptualized in 2011, Mysteries began as a podcast series that, now in its eleventh year, has hosted an array of mixes and original works. The project has since evolved, expanding into a curated global event series and record label.
