Mysteries of the Deep CXLVII - Bea Brennan

An invisible city with silicon cathedrals, a tangerine sky and an ever-flowing current of microscopic lifeforms suddenly becomes visible. Such visions of hyperfuturistic phantasmagoria solidified in tone are somewhat of a specialty for our next guest. Plant43 aka Emile Facey is a name synonymous with some of the most consistent electro records of the past 20 years. Besides his track "Eclipse Season" on the second Unrush compilation, Emile has carved out his own niche of bubbling basslines and synth mastery on many notable labels such as Frustrated Funk, CPU, Semantica as well as his own Plant43 Recordings. What makes his music so engaging is his deep sensibility for atmosphere and gifted ear for experimentation, making him a perfect candidate for an Unrush mix. Unfolding with a Glass-like minimalism and patience, this hour of syntropic serotonin is sure to inject your mind into a placid, otherwordly place within the matrix.

Marja Burchard is a composer, performer, artist and multi-instrumentalist. She was born as the only daughter of Christian Burchard, the founder of the music band Embryo. Having born and raised within the band, she has taken the role of leading the band herself since the death of her father in 2018. She has toured with Embryo in several countries around the world, including Japan, Morocco, Turkey, England, India etc. After studying ethnology, Slavic philology and musicology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Marja devoted herself solely to music. Since the age of nineteen until now she has been playing and composing in other bands like: Karl Hektor and the Malcouns, Radio Citizen, Karaba, Express Brass Band, World Wide Wig, Séferia and Jisr. Since 2018, she has been composing music for plays such as "Shush" by Eszter Tompa at Teatrul Gong in Sibiu (Romania), "Kill the Audience" by Rabih Mroué at the Kammerspiele in Munich, at the puppet theatre "Theater Ananas" in Munich, as well as for the street theatre AntagonTheateraktion from Frankfurt am Main, with which she has performed at various international theatre festivals such as in Brazil, Siberia, Romania, etc. Since 2015 she has been working with the Finnish dancer Anna Orkolainen, with whom she has developed, composed and performed many pieces such as "Die Regentrude", "Spiderweb", Porotanssi" or "der letzte Seraphim". She lives and works in Munich. Apart from being a singer she plays several instruments like the vibraphone, piano, organ, accordion, trombone, santoor, marimba, drums and percussion instruments.

Polygonia represents a multidisciplinary music and art project conceived by Lindsey Wang from Munich, Germany. The soundscape of her own productions conveys a mystical, organic character and is characterized by driving complex rhythms. Polygonia’s sound palette ranges from energetic, dark deep techno to downtempo, grey area to textural and/or harmonic ambient. In addition, motifs from nature play a major role in many of her productions. Her DJ and live sets are characterized by a hypnotizing effect that invites one to completely lose oneself in the complex world of sounds for a longer period of time. Polygonia has already visited numerous of international prestigious venues. She is now a regular at Tresor or Berghain in Berlin, Blitz or Rote Sonne in Munich to name a few. Together with the artists Dycide and MTRL, she established her collective and label IO in 2018. In 2021, Polygonia launched the collaborative band project Lyder with the musicians Niklas Bühler and Moritz Stahl, focusing on the fusion of jazz and electronic music. In July 2022, she founded her own label QEONE. In addition, she manages the premiere and podcast platform Hadal Resonance.

As Bright Patterns completes its fourth trip around the sun, we welcome Imaginary Softwoods as the special guest for November. It’s been a dream of mine to have John Elliott on the show. He’s been a part of so many incredible projects: Mist, Outer Space, Organic Dial, Emeralds—not to mention all of the eternally awesome records that were released via his expert curation on Spectrum Spools. It’s a treasure trove. All that said, the vast output of John’s solo project, Imaginary Softwoods, sits firmly atop this immense pile of sonic wonder. So many of these cuts have been played on Bright Patterns over the last four years. It is a vibe I carry with me, one that’s deeply embedded in my relationship to music. The last time I heard a mix from John was 2017 and I still talk about how good it is. With all of the gratitude to everyone who listens, I hope you’ll enjoy this mix of what he’s been listening to lately. Designed as a bit of a balm for a world in pain, it covers contemporary selections with a few new age classics, reflecting the daily eclecticism of his auditory diet. It also ushers in a new era for Bright Patterns, where it will run from 9am to 10am ET with the same Thursday cadence as it has been, each month, since the beginning.

"Until we are together again"
In June 2023, I said goodbye to my beloved dog companion after sharing twelve wonderful years together. Spencer was my family, my best friend, a constant force in my life, and a source of pure love. His presence always brought a smile to my face, he was truly amazing and beautiful. His departure made me reflect on the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing the present moment, prioritizing what truly matters, and letting go of the unnecessary. During a period of deep grief, I was tasked with selecting music for the first Aurora event. Immersing myself in this process and performing there provided a much-needed release. The music I chose and played was a dedication to Spencer, evoking feelings of something beyond our human experience. I hoped he could hear it from wherever he was.
It was a way for me to say thank you to him for the love, patience, and companionship he had given me. I am immensely grateful for the amazing life we shared and so proud of our journey together. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

Mysteries of the Deep is a New York-based record label, podcast, and event series — focused on ambient & experimental music in various forms. Mysteries — as fans lovingly call it — is concerned with exploration of unknown realms, and its focus, in addition to showcasing a dynamic spectrum of electronic music from foremost artists in the field, is to thoughtfully engage its audience. 

Conceptualized in 2011, Mysteries began as a podcast series that, now in its eleventh year, has hosted an array of mixes and original works. The project has since evolved, expanding into a curated global event series and record label.
