The Obligate Surrogate is like a "replacement in waiting." It carries out its own functions until called upon to support some greater body, if and when another similar unit fails to support that greater body. It attempts to meet the function of the previous unit, but will inevitably have its own characteristics. We are all, in some way, an obligate surrogate.

Obligate Surrogate is the hardware-based techno project of Casimer Oblivion, utilizing synths, samplers, sequencers, and similar equipment made between the 1970s and present day. The name is derived from the constant, yet critical decision to repair, replace-in-kind, or replace-with-other, in effort to achieve a desired sonic result.

We see a similar substitution all the time in nature: in the way our bodies respond to damage, in our thought processes, how we interact as social groups, and into large masses, militaries, and governments. It is just part of our programming.

Psychology Of Terror

During the making of Triggers circa 2015, when Rene was on his way to LA, I had a handful of tracks that didn't make the cut for whatever reason (too rough, didn't totally fit as Nearest or for Triggers). Since being diagnosed with cancer, I haven't been able to work on much music, and much of the equipment (namely hardware sequencers) used to make this track either died or lost their data. So chances are this track will never go beyond what it is, so enjoy it for what it is!

A little one-night challenge to write and record something with a new synth I had for about a month. While sick and exhausted.

It ends abruptly because it was time to go to bed. I can hear a lot more to do with it …

NEAREST is an accumulation of lost feelings, reflections, and passions previously buried and forgotten throughout the years. The duo consists of Casey Grabowski and René Alpha from Philadelphia, PA / Wilmington, DE. Their music is a fusion of cold vocals, pulsating beats, and layered synthesizers reminiscent of underground music from the late 70's and mid 80's.
