It's been a while since I played an all-vinyl mix, so for this week's set I'm playing some of my favorite hypnotic & raw techno jams full of undulating polyrhythms and booming bass lines pulled from deep in my crates.

Session042 — [Minimal, Hypnotic & Raw Techno (All Vinyl)]

Skee Mask is one of dance music's greatest crossover stories of the past decade, with new albums greeted with the attention usually reserved for an Aphex Twin or a Caribou. ("Loved seeing this on r/indieheads," said one Reddit user, on the release of the 2021 LP Pool.) It's not hard to understand why: albums like Compro, he blends well-worn dance music tropes with incredible, detailed soundscapes and spine-tingling melodies. And on his 12-inches, he brings that sensibility to the dance floor, with an approach probably best described as articulate. Even on his most ambient of tracks, everything is in its right place. Along with founders the Zenker Brothers, his music outlines everything that makes Munich outfit Ilian Tape one of the best techno labels going.

On the decks, it's kind of a different story. It might surprise you if you only know his albums, but Skee Mask is an incredible DJ, balancing his predilection for hip-hop and UK-informed sounds with laser-focused techno. He can adapt to all sorts of situations—there's an incredible recording of him DJing with four of the best grime and drum & bass MCs in the business—and on his RA Podcast he focuses on the techno side of things, with nearly two hours of pacey techno and creative mixing, with dips into acid, electro, garage and more. It's a party-starting mix from a genuine star, perfect for getting through the holiday doldrums or pre-gaming your NYE plans. Like Skee Mask's best records, it's something to enjoy in any number of settings.

Well well well...

It's been a while since the bros got together to record a mix, so we're pleased to present you with this recording of an all-vinyl set from Alex's (@nostradahm's) Halloween bday bash back at the end of October. 

Alex brought his turntables and all his gear outside to make this killer setup under the treehouse in his backyard. We chilled, caught up, goofed around, and shared some of our favorite records we've been listening to since we last saw each other.

What can we say? Great vibes and great times with longtime friends. 

Special thanks to @Moosy_q for bringing over some vinyl and his mobile recording rig and all of our other friends and loved ones there to dance and howl at the Halloween moon.

nostradahm is Alex Dahm, an aspiring architect, designer, DJ, and music producer based in Los Angeles.

As a DJ, Alex has played everything from major festivals to underground events including: Coachella, Splash House, Pattern Bar, Ace Hotel DTLA, Melody, Certified Groovers, and a plethora more parties throughout Southern California. In addition to his numerous live performances, Alex hosted over 30 weekly 2-hour radio shows for the UK-based DJ collective Crate Digs (@crate-digs) from 2021-2022.

Drawing from his full-time occupation as an architect/designer, Alex's love of patterns, shapes, complex geometry, and spatial perception are the primary creative concepts at the foundation of his music. Like pages from an audio sketchbook, he regularly records and posts live jams to his Instagram and Facebook pages that are eventually mixed, mastered, and released as tracks.

What sets Alex apart is his ability to seamlessly weave together a wide range of influences into his productions and DJ sets. His musical palette encompasses genres like house, techno/dub techno, UK garage, drum and bass, disco, new wave, industrial, post-punk, ambient, classical, jazz, hip-hop, and more.
