Isabella Tree writes for publications such as National Geographic, Granta, The Sunday Times and The Observer. Her articles have been selected for The Best American Travel Writing and Reader's Digest Today's Best Non-Fiction, and she was Overall Winner of the Travelex Travel Writer Awards. 

She published her first book The Bird Man - a Biography of John Gould when she was 25. 

Her latest book Wilding - the Return of Nature to an English Farm charts the story of the pioneering rewilding project in West Sussex where she lives with her husband Charlie Burrell.

Nature and economic progress often have a conflicting relationship. In this podcast, lifelong champion of the natural world Sir David Attenborough joins IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde for a tête à tête on how economic growth and the economies of nature can work together to preserve life on earth. In the UK we have 350 different words for mud, not quite as enchanting as Iceland's 100 words for snow, granted. But these words, derived from dialects, and often with folklorish roots can describe an experience or place so viscerally. 

For the fourth episode in our series on rewilding we've set up camp in Tom's shed, from where he tends to his tomatoes. Tom is joined again by Anna Souter, co-curator of Rewind/Rewild, to discuss how language can strengthen our memories of, and connections to the landscape around us.

As part of the Rewind/Rewild exhibition, Anna invited thought leaders and creatives working in the area of rewilding to talk about their areas of expertise. This week we feature a talk by Dominick Tyler, a photographer who has turned to exploring landscape through language for his current book, Uncommon Ground.

David Reeve and Luciane Pisani are the editors and art director of Where the Leaves Fall, a magazine that focuses on our contemporary relationship with nature. It’s the sort of subject that can easily feel overwhelming, but they explain that they’re on a mission to tell stories about sustainability and the natural world that feel human, and which ultimately inspire readers to take positive action. They’re also keen that their magazine should help give a platform to voices that aren’t normally heard, and so they search far and wide, looking particularly to the global south for local stories about these global environmental issues.

Art and environmentalism in Where the Leaves Fall

For International Dawn Chorus Day, we invited sound artists Chris Watson and Pascal Wyse to create this piece from dawn chorus in Highgate Bowl. Recorded between 4am and 7am on Saturday, 2nd May, the chorus is condensed into just 12 minutes, with introductions to the different sections of the avian orchestra.
