A relative newcomer to the progressive house scene, Mike Isai’s nascent production career has already seen a debut on the Nick Warren led, Hope Recordings, via September 2020’s “Pillars to Butterflies” EP. A March 2021 reworking of Shanil Alox’s “Algorithm” for Droid9 illustrated Isai’s remix capabilities, as the US star now debuts on Meanwhile with his twin-tracker.

Opening proceedings, “Home” is a dark and sultry piece that pulsates hypnotically through its near 9-minute voyage with a panoply of textured layers and white-noise effects. Quickly hitting its stride, a pounding kick is accompanied by an immaculately syncopated synth motif that provides the basis for a counterpoint phrase to sit elegantly on top in glittering repetitive pattern. Reaching a rousing filtered denouement at the mid-point, “Home” drops back into a familiar arrangement as all elements combine to impressive effect in the third movement.

Continuing the powerful rhythmic framework of its partner, “87 North” immediately impresses with its 16th note bassline and seismic kick. Another syncopated synth loop provides an imposing trademark production technique as haunting melodies drift over the mid-range, drenched in reverb and white-noise washes. Coruscating pads add further intrigue as the 7-minute piece evolves, coming fully to the fore in a ‘wall of sound’ breakdown, before the second half picks up the pace again with percussive intensity. The juxtaposition of meandering melodic threads and bassline urgency thus creates an impressively woven dynamism.

Another new artist to grace Meanwhile finds Arizona based Brenden LaBonte creating a potent wave of success with his Forerunners moniker. With over a double century of production credits to his name for some of the finest modern dance imprints, Sudbeat Music, Anjunadeep, and Black Hole have all played host to the US artist’s emotive soundscapes. Reworking “Home”, the Forerunners remix is chock full of the trademark soundscapes that characterise LaBonte’s work, with whispering melodies floating atop a powerful beat and ticking hi-hat groove. A relentless bassline sequence adds weight and poise over the 8-minute offering as subtle variations on Mike Isai’s original make their presence felt. Pausing for breath at a spine-tingling mid-point, cadenced bass groove and subtle melodic prowess hit the heights in the latter stages.

New music sees Mike Isai guided home by his north star, accompanied by a shining remix from Forerunners.

Partial Press Release: The 41st release on microCastle welcomes Khen to the label for his debut EP. The young Israeli artist has been touted as one of his country's foremost electronic music talents. Undoubtedly a future global star, the long-time favourite of Hernan Cattaneo, Guy J and Guy Mantzur has risen to his greatest heights in 2015, with a recent release on Lost & Found Records, preceded by similarly excellent material for Sudbeat Music and Parquet Recordings. Now closing the year out on a high note, Khen makes his long awaited debut on microCastle with the 'Pollen Spreader' EP, alongside a remix from the always excellent Luca Bacchetti.

The EP's lead piece 'Sunflakes' has been the subject of much mystery since the summer season. Following several airings by Hernan Cattaneo, Guy J and Guy Mantzur, the collective underground continued to wonder who crafted this poignant creation. The rugged energy and timeless emotive qualities may have been a dead giveaway for some of Khen's most diehard fans, but now the magic of 'Sunflakes' is finally unveiled to the world. Following a trip to Malta for a weekend and gig with Guy J the composition came together quickly and has been sending dance floors into a frenzy ever since. As Khen describes "When I was asked by microCastle for a main melody track it took me a couple of months to start working on it, not only because I didn’t have time but because I was almost afraid to start a new session with the possibility of no success, and one day it just happened in a special summer mood with the inspiration after my first Lost and Found night in Malta. This is what I call funky, melodic and progressive minded, full of emotions."

The techno inspired 'Emergency Routine' follows with its big chunky, beats and shimmering overlays, which are just enough to heighten your emotions and initiate a break full of hope and tranquility. In Khen's own words: "I was searching for live instruments, strings, drums and bass guitar together with analogue synths to make a spacious but dramatic atmosphere, and the name reminds me of the difficult days of the security situation in my country."

Responsible for a rich seam of musical talent in the world of underground dance, the introduction of another South American to the ranks of the Particles roster sees Argentinean, Sebastian Busto, take a significant career step forwards with his 3-track "Nature" EP.

A man with a long-held passion for music, Busto's academic prowess in piano from early childhood ultimately led him to study music theory, singing and guitar at the Buenos Aries Conservatory of Music, as an initial foray into the music industry, via performances with rock acts, brought notoriety across his hometown and success with a number of tours and albums. A realisation that dance music was where his true desires lay came from an epiphany watching an electrifying Creamfields performance of legendary godfather of the Argentinean underground dance scene, Hernan Cattaneo.

Turning his attention to the progressive house genre, Sebastian Busto found his true calling. Making an immediate impact with the "A New Kind of Science" EP for Golden Cat Recordings in October 2014, the Argentinean has gone on to see legion original productions signed to some of the industry's finest underground imprints. Thus, OLD SQL, Balkan Connection and Golden Wings have played host to such notable releases as the "Escape EP", "Evolution" and "Spiritual", the latter lighting up the Summer of 2016 in trademark fashion. Well regarded by his peers, the support of Cattaneo himself has leant considerable success to Busto's cause. Indeed, with his countryman playing the title track itself on his "Resident" Proton Radio show in July 2016, it is with great pleasure that we welcome Sebastian Busto to his Particles debut with his concept-themed "Nature" EP.

Opening with the title track, "Nature" is a strong, emotional offering, full of stepped arpeggio lines and delayed shimmering melodic riffs and sequences. Full of bright analogue sounds and a rich sonic palette, the 9-minute voyage forges a vibrant landscape backed by a strong beat and rich percussive rhythm that fills the upper frequencies with an assortment of hats, shakers and female vocal sounds.

Opening with its complex percussive patterns, "Mankind" retains the aural identity of its predecessor with its intelligent use of melodic sequences and rich sonic architecture. A firm foundation is laid via the marriage of a strong beat and subterranean bass line creating a work that bristles with menacing intensity in the breakdown that extends into the third movement with consummate skill.

Final track, "Making Life", is immediately characterised by techno leanings with its rapid-fire bass line and pounding beat that evolves into a delicately grooved affair. Strong chord progressions via smooth pads open a path for a wealth of melodic counterpoint and the presence of an electric guitar lead line adds weight and intrigue to the four-to-floor rhythmic framework.

Whether or not "Nature" or nurture is the dominant force, there is little debating the argument over Sebastian Busto's skilled musicianship.

Argentina is a country with a celebrated progressive house heritage. One of the key figures at the inception of the movement was Marcelo Vasami. First hitting the scene in 2005, the Buenos Aires-based artist quickly became one of the genre's most recognizable names, eventually showcasing his music on Sudbeat and Hope Recordings. He continues to be one of his country's most popular DJs, having shared the stage with Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy J and Replug label boss Cid Inc. Having debuted on Replug in 2011, Marcelo now makes a long overdue return with a brand new EP entitled 'A Fantastic Fear Of Everything'.

Original music from Marcelo has been scarce as of late, with his last project (a collaboration with fellow countryman Nicko Izzo) being released well over a year ago on Nick Warren's Hope Recordings. 'A Fantastic Fear Of Everything' couldn't arrive with more anticipation and points to being the Argentine's career best work.  Entrancing soundscapes combined with a sub heavy groove and strong rhythmic elements set the piece in motion. Fading to prominence, a tasteful arp naturally evolves, allowing you to get lost in a sea of cosmic vibrations. Chilling moods resonate at the core of the centrepiece, building slowly with charismatic charm, before a rush of percussion sparks a powerful drop and seductive finale.

Returning once again to his esteemed imprint is Henri Hurtig aka Cid Inc, who provides the lone interpretation of 'A Fantastic Fear Of Everything'. An eventful summer saw the Finnish artist with EPs on Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music and Replug Records, the latter of which is still enjoying time in Beatport's progressive house chart, now four months after its release. Cid Inc's vivid imagination and uncanny sense of club dynamics brings 'A Fantastic Fear Of Everything' even closer to a peak time dance floor. The ebb and flow of its energy is engaging, as a rolling full bodied groove, redemptive rhythms and avant-garde sci-fi textures unite in perfect harmony for this synth-driven scorcher. Already a highlight in Cid Inc's recent sets across the world, it's now set to be one of the biggest and most sought after progressive house tracks as 2017 winds to a close. 

The companion piece 'Plot' showcases a deeper, darker side of Marcelo's studio repertoire. Quirky, tough and a touch subversive it's an interesting contrast in mood and design. Primed for dance floor destruction, its funked-up progressive attitude is powerful with enticing strokes, buzzing effects and ghostly vocals adding their own melancholic touch. It perfectly completes the release which now sits as Marcelo's most accomplished work to date.
