(The dj in me hates that I've done this, but the "artist" recognizes the value in making someone feel something is off rather than just tell them it is.  This is me showing while not (yet) telling.  (I just don't want any of you thinking that you're having a stroke when you sense the usually rigid meter dragging...  You MAY be having a stroke, of course--but that would just be a sad coincidence, wouldn't it?  And please, call for an ambulance.)

Fear

The machines never stop running.  The factory runs triple shifts so it never needs to shut down.  The products are in demand worldwide and an entire industry has grown to accomodate those demands.  Now, we are all dependent on those machines, those factories, those products, and that industry.  

Do you feel vulnerable yet?  

I haven't always been so technophobic.  I've delighted in living in an age when my life has been much improved by technological advances, almost constantly.  

But, I've always enjoyed reading speculative science fiction about where once current trends may be taking us, the unintended consequences of what we do now for the future, and, how the choices a society makes can point us towards or away from an imagined result.   Perhaps, all of what I once enjoyed is now tinted by the caution and uncomfortability with the future's sense of acceleration that comes with being an old.  Perhaps, I never thought of myself living to see some of that imaginative fantasy edge closer and closer to being reality.  

I'm not the only one who has never been quite so scared for the present as I feel now.  I'm old enough to have grown up in a world that honestly thought there wouldn't be a future.  I didn't think we'd survive to see the new millenium.  I didn't think we'd survive for me to live to be 21.  I thought the end could come at any moment and probably would.  

And, I think we all got overconfident when those fears and that eventuality washed away, so much more quickly than any of the best science fiction minds could have ever imagined.  It felt like we'd defeated the final boss and could enjoy an endless roll of credits as we all danced and jumped up and down (until we noticed how few sprites were being used to animate that same dance and that same jump over and over again...)  

Now, it feels like we're back on the precipice, only this time it feels like we're the ones with our foot on the accelerator and aiming to Thelma and Louise ourselves off the edge...when before it felt like something that could be done to us, now it feels like we're doing it to ourselves (we do, and that's what really hurts.)  

Perhaps that cloud of melancholy dread has begun to be expressed in the dystopian technophobic slant that it feels like Interbay music production has started to take, lately.  (I have the benefit, of course, in knowing what I've been working on lately--and as these projects make their way through the lab until they appear here on SoundCloud, you might not be encountering any perceived trends the same way I do.)  

This is the music of the relentless machine.  Of the perils of technology advancing past the limits of our imagination, much less planning or intention.  Of the limits of ownership.  (And yes, I have just seen Mickey 17--and while not a perfect match of inspiration, those of you who have seen it too might feel some inspiration from that.)  

I've always felt that dystopian science fiction proved a vital element of our present, as a warning to recognize the path we could be taking and to give us time to navigate away from the falls ahead.  Perhaps this is my contribution to that grand creative tradition?  

...but now I worry that it might already be too late.  

(On the other hand, this might be a low bpm mechanical grinder of a tune, with discordant sounds and glitches being a feature, not a bug.  I guess it depends on your perspective and how long it has been since you've checked the news.)
