After a release that did not go unnoticed on Ulla Records first VA “In Motion”, Austher is back with his debut EP “Hybrid Humans”.

His first standalone project flirts with a dystopian, transhumanist and dark-disco-inspired universe. Always blending genres, he subverts the codes of rock and disco with electronic sonorities, to craft his retro-inspired yet resolutely modern sound.

The opening track “Hybrid Humans” sets the stage for the transhumanist journey to come : arpeggiated basslines, catchy leads and bouncing drums making up for an ambiguous, bitterly naive, track. But the reality check comes quickly. “Mind Threat” promptly sets for a much darker tone, with heavy driven basslines, dramatic synths and intense build-ups. “Humanity Resilience” takes this dystopian road a step further. Shaped around hypnotizing melodies, this track pushes up to the edge of rationality. “Prophecy” strikes as a final statement, fully embracing the experimental turn this journey has taken, with its heavy synths, and gnarly acid basslines !

Abandon all preconceptions you have about the future, and dive in Austher’s transhumanist story !

Dystopie Solaire #11 - Gare Du Nord Invite Petrvs

Niv Ast is an artist who very much operates 'out of the box'. His work on Correspondant, Optimo, Disco Halal, Watergate Records and Get Physical - as well as his work via his own label Band Apart - is bold, line-blurring club gear making him a perfect candidate for an Exploited Club release.

Niv Ast is inspired by the psychedelic waves of acid, the attitude of the punk-rock and the light headed groove of disco. His music is regularly played by DJ Tennis, Jennifer Cardini, Polo & Pan among others. He has performed alongside Tale Of Us, Seth Troxler, Amelie Lens, Blond:ish and many more.

'Tainted In The Sun' kicks things off with a Manchester chorus beaming out over stroppy power chords and a throbbing kick. Progress marches on, gathering colour as it blooms into a synth-driven haze adorned with brass flashes, spiralling sequences and a straight-talking snare. The vibe is heady, infectious and a touch subversive - a slice of euphoric recall for anyone who barely remembers the 90s.

'Don’t Belong' follows up with an Indie-Italo hybrid. Tough, muscular drums anchor the groove while a flexible synth line gently pulls things astray. Clever sequencing has the track swelling in layers as a brooding intensity builds up towards a bridge of darting strobes. The refrain drives back in, hooking the listener back in and capping off a boisterous pastiche; one that strums a certain nostalgic chord whilst also presenting something fresh and novel.'

"Suddenly, I stop..."  

The song title gives you a few clues as to where the inspiration for this latest Interbay track has come from, though, as ever, the end result ends up sounding a lot like...interbay.  

My first thought was that I wanted a high up on the neck bassline like Hooky dropped onto New Order's ceremony--and the bassline I came up with here is an homage to that...  

Then, I wanted to include some of club/dance electronics that New Order put on "Blue Monday" (or the b-side to that single, "The Beach").  You can definitely hear the influence of that on the beat, and especially the claps.  

Then I wanted to blend those two very-specific-to-their-era New Order sounds with the more modern rave house sounds found on their "Technique" album.  For example, you'll hear a growl that reminds me of "Fine Time."    

You'll even hear a cowbell--perhaps a tip of the cap to "The Perfect Kiss"?

...but, I didn't want to make a pastiche various eras of New Order.  So, remembering "The Walk" by The Cure, I threw another grittier sounding bassline behind the Hooky-style melodic bass.  

Somehow, a bass one-shot (which is definitely NOT a sample) that sounds like it was yoinked from Wings' "Goodnight Tonight" (but it wasn't) snuck into the mix in a couple of places.  

And because one of the rules that I play by here on SoundCloud is that every track posted here needs to have some sort of vocal element, I slipped in a couple of processed and echo-drenched vocal samples from a fairly obvious (to people my age or those into what I'm into) source.  (In fact, this is the second Interbay track to sample vocals from this same artist--bonus Interbay points if you can figure out which other track does too!)  

And there are some nods to a synth funk influence in some of the synths and melody lines, and a laugh near the end of the track which reminds me of Gorillaz--which doesn't feel appropriate to any of the chosen influences of thiis song--but, I think it helps the track be as danceable as it is...and it also helps it sound like Interbay.    

I'm a particular fan of this track--I know I would have spun it when I was a nightclub dj and I know I would have included it on mixtapes I'd give to friends and unrequited crushes (which is what we did in those days.)

Relish Recordings presents the new single from Headman featuring Scott Fraser and
Douglas McCarthy giving a taster of his artist album due later in the year...

Robi Insinna aka Headman pairs up with former Relish producer Scott Fraser of the so-called Scrutton Street Axis (along with likeminded tunesmiths Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J Fairplay who all work in the same basement studio) and Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas McCarthy who provides vocals.

Noise is a fierce and prickly brew of synthetic sounds, gurgling acid and heavyweight
dubbed kick drums. The vocals of McCarthy add a nineties feel as he asks over and over if you “want some noise”. Sweaty, smoky, dirty basement disco might be a good way to describe it.

As well as a dub version there are two more remixes. The first comes from Daniel Maloso of Cómeme fame. He turns the track into a more electrified, John Carpenter style version laced up with raw and frazzled arpeggiated synths and plenty of libidinous vocal cries.

The final remix comes from Sean Johnston aka Hardway Bros – a DJ partner in crime with Andrew Weatherall in their A Love From Outer Space party project. He speeds things up a little and adds a bit of retro style dancefloor darkness to ensure the package offers something for every moment of a night.
