Simon & Garfunkel's song "7 O'Clock News/Silent Night" is an unexpected inspiration to this track.  Never thought I'd try to connect Interbay and Paul & Artie...but these are strange times.

Can you merge cheesy early eighties synthpop and nineties grunge...without any guitars?  

Maybe.  That certainly seems like what I've done here with today's Interbay track, "Zombies Among Us"--which has nothing to do with the Zombie variant of the Among Us video game.  

So, I had some synth sounds--a thick bass, a crisp and simply bleepy lead, a washy pad.  
I had some drums and kept the patterns simple with those drums.  
Then, I had a single half-verse of good female pop vocals...and I thought that was the direction I was headed.  

...but I needed more vocals, and the first vocal I listened to happened to start with the same word my female vocal ended with--and that sort of coincidental serendipity is something I've learned to lean into.  However, that new vocal was decidedly not female and not pop.  

If you'd told me it was Eddie Vedder slumming for some extra bread, I could believe that.  

The song was so pretty--too pretty for some grunge-style vocal about being dead on the inside--still, I like playing with dichotomies and opposites.  Could I make it work?  

Again, maybe.  I added Heavyocity's Punish effect on the already thick bass.  I toned down the sound of the pads and the lead--they are still there, but they're not as upfront as they originally were.  And then I chopped up all the vocals and rearranged them all to better suit what I was going for...  

It sure ain't synthpop anymore...and it ain't grunge.  What is it?  Why, that's obvious, isn't it?
It is...Interbay.  

It'll be up to you to let me know if the track is a successful experiment deserving of escaping Phantom Laboratories West and potentially spreading to the rest of the world--you know, like a virus...or a fungus, depending on how you like your zombies.  

NOTE:  The lyrics don't mention zombies...ever.  It isn't about zombies, but the feeling like you could be a zombie, because you feel dead inside.  If this sounds like you--eating brains is NOT going to improve your situation.

This track might not last very long on this platform, but I thought it was important to document the moment.  

Once again, I thought I knew what I was going to post today--this time, I had, already to go, a track called "Be All Right"--126bpm of hopeful synthpop.  But this doesn't seem to be the right time to be all right.  

Knowing that I (thought I) had today's track picked and finished, I kept producing...not with anything in mind--but, as I often do, I look for plugins that I haven't used to see what new sounds they might help me discover and I can follow the inspiration those sounds give me as I follow the direction they take me in.  

And the direction these sounds took me in was dark, cinematic, bombastic.  It was pretty cool, but, I paused to catch up on current events

...which were dark, cinematic and bombastic.  

This track then became a reaction to what is going on in Los Angeles (and soon, all over America.)  

Don't like your music chocolate combined with your political peanut butter--I get it.  Skip this one.  There will be another Interbay track tomorrow and you may like that one more.  

But, if you're astonished to be cursed to be living in "interesting times" and by the complete abandonment of everything that I thought this country stood for...consider this track to be a news aggregator in post-punk bedroom music form.  

Honestly, I didn't even try to hide the sourced news-related snippets...so, it could get caught by the algorithms...but this was the best way to take the song I was working on and use it as a platform for the voices telling me things I can hardly believe--but also things I knew I'd have to expect, but hoped that the systems in place in this country could possibly prevent.  

Nope.  

This is as long of a track as I can post here...but I had enough samples to make two...maybe even three tracks like this.  Didn't get to use the stuff about how reporters were being purposefully aimed at and hit by rubber bullets, didn't even go too deep into the analysis that this is ALL being done to justify further power grabs by the executive...that there seems to be no response that doesn't somehow help that which we should all want to stop.  

And, with the current regime in power, this song will probably be old news by tomorrow and there will be some new outrage demanding our attention.  Actually, probably a dozen new outrages...  

I'm not foolish enough to try to convice those cheering all this on with my Seattle-influenced opinions...but for years I've heard that we can't put ANY limits on firearms in this country because "what happens if we need to protect ourselves from the tyranny of the federal government?"--and those same people are absolutely silent right now as they witness their wet dream scenario happening, caused by "their guy."  

David Bowie once put out a song called "This Is Not America."  Maybe it's better that he died before he realized how wrong he was...  

(Someday, I may rescue the music from this song and put it to a different use...but for now, this is the track I feel like I needed to share today.)
