A brief field recording of a traditional Vietnamese tiểu nhạc (chamber ensemble of the royal music of the former court of Vietnam) performance in the former royal capital of Huế. The performance, which was part of a Buddhist ceremony, was recorded c. 1966 (possibly by a Vietnamese Buddhist monk or the radio station in Huế), and a copy, on reel-to-reel tape, was given to the ethnomusicologist Phong T. Nguyen (Dr. Nguyễn Thuyết Phong) by a Vietnamese Buddhist monk in approximately 1966, while Phong was working at a major Buddhist temple in Saigon. Phong later transferred the tape to audio cassette, for the sake of convenience.

The recording is part of the Phong Nguyen Collection, which is housed at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York.

This performance is rare and interesting in that it features a set of tuned rice bowls, similar to the Indian jaltarang. The tiểu nhạc tradition is the only known Vietnamese musical genre to feature this instrument, and it is unknown if its use continues to the present day. Other instruments include a đàn nhị (2-stringed vertical fiddle),đàn tỳ bà (pear-shaped lute with four strings), trống (small drum played with sticks), and a chuông gia trì (large bowl gong).
