BIO:

In the mid 90′s, Garrett Dillon fell in love with electronic music via acts like The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Underworld. In 1997 he attended his first warehouse rave in Detroit and immediately fell in love with the pounding kick drums and dark synths of techno.

Soon after, Garrett (more commonly known as Dillon) spent time immersing himself in the techno culture via DJing, promoting events, and producing his own music. He took a hiatus from 2004-2010, but came back just as dark techno was once again on the rise. In 2011 he started booking events again, and in 2012 co-founded his label, Dystopian Rhythm, with Margin Walker.

Since then he has focused more on music production, with releases on Concepto Hipnotico, Resorted Recordings, Business Class Records, Ex-Tract, his own Dystopian Rhythm, and several others.


INTERVIEW:

1) You've been involved in the Detroit Techno scene for a while now, but a lot more active releasing music and playing shows recently; what's the driving force that spurred you on?

I’ve been involved in either attending, performing or throwing events in Detroit for 16 years now, although I did take an extended break from 2004 - 2009 (the MNML years). While I attempted, and failed, at starting a label back in 2001, I felt the urge to try again once techno started coming back. It gave me new life to hear quality music being released and played after soooo many years of bleeps and bloops and 808 woodblocks. Real, powerful techno inspires me. The quality of techno today is, in my opinion, the best its ever been.

2) You co-own Dystopian Rhythm Records with Mike Clark; in a short span of time you guys have issued a number of quality vinyl releases. Along with Blank Code it would appear that you guys are pushing a new wave of dark Detroit Techno to the masses. From an inside perspective, what are your thoughts on this growth and unfolding?

I feel very honored to be part of the techno resurgence in Detroit. This city has given me so much in the past, and while it feels like most everyone previously involved in techno moved away to Berlin, there are a few of us still pushing quality techno out. I believe techno has new life, and it will continue to grow (again) here in the birthplace of techno.

3) Given the dire economic situation in Detroit oftentimes the media portrays the city as a barren post apocalyptic wasteland, and although it's a tough town, clearly it still supports quality Techno music outside of the Movement weekend. Is there a solid, fresh scene into what you guys at Dystopian Rhythm are doing?

I’m never one to sugar-coat Detroit. It’s raw and unforgiving. There probably isn’t another place like it in America. Fortunately that doesn’t keep people from coming out on the weekends. Nothing compares to the scale of Movement and the multitude of options for after-parties that weekend, but I do feel that there is new life the other 51 weeks during the year. Attendance seems to be picking up overall, and our Dystopian Rhythm events always have a nice sized and lively crowd (as you can hear in some of our live recordings). We have a great core of supporters, and we're wining over some of the newer kids who previously thought they didn't like techno.

4) The tracks you produce tend toward peak time bangers; in the studio what do you use to make it all happen? It seems people can't get enough of your hi hats, what's your trick?

Ableton is forever my workhorse. I’ve owned Ableton since version 1.5, and I’ve never strayed since. It changed everything for me. I do have a bad habit of buying, trying, and selling gear that I think is going to fit into my production setup. I always try to get external hardware mixed in (the latest being the Elektron Analog Four), but for the most part I’m in the digital realm. Ableton, Native Instruments Komplete, and a few other plugins here and there.

I forgot who the first person was to mention the hi-hats, but its seemed to take on a life of its own. I do think people don’t EQ the highs in their tracks nearly as much as they should. Wether its nice, crisp highs, or a distorted synth up in the high octaves, it always sounds better when given a bit more push. Without it, tracks sometimes just sound flat.

I'm also trying to not pigeonhole myself into only making peak-time tunes, although that will always be the bulk of what I do. I even have a (slightly heavier) dub techno inspired track coming out soon (with some killer remixes from Justin Schumacher and Uun).

5) Personally, and label-wise what can we expect from you in the near future?

Dystopian Rhythm is picking up steam. We have a lot of good things in the works. Our next five EP’s are lined up (the next being Virulent’s EP which comes out on the 27th), and we’re currently signing tracks for a V/A for DRR010 - our tenth release. We have some big names, some surprises, and some lesser known talent that we believe deserve more recognition. Our podcast also hit our one year anniversary recently. Mike has done a great job with that (he lines up all the guests).

As far as me personally, expect for my production to pick up in both quality and quantity very quickly. I just moved to a new studio setup, and the difference compared to my prior setup is unreal. Its amazing what having a properly arranged room can do. On the DJ side of things, I’m still open to play some gigs, but I tend to hibernate more in the winter, so I expect the focus to remain on producing.

Garrett Dillon - From 0-1 Studio Session Vol 064

K² is a music addict and 1990’s rave scene survivor from Oslo who occasionally DJ's. A vinyl freak for over two decades, his ever-growing record collection includes a little bit of everything – from ambient to deep house, acid and hardcore. And techno – lots of it. This mix explores the deep, driving, hypnotic side of his favourite genre, where current  “drone techno” stalwarts such as Milton Bradley and Giorgio Gigli nestle snugly alongside oldschool heroes like Orlando Voorn and Robert Leiner. One of the intentions was to bridge the past and the present: The oldest track is from 1992, the newest is from this year. 

K²’s favourite track of all time is “Elektra” by The Source Experience. The first record he bought was a Knutsen & Ludvigsen LP (apologies to non-Norwegians). He’s written a few hundred record reviews and compiled a techno CD with some friends to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Oslo’s oldest squat (Blitz) . He gets misty-eyed at the sight of abandoned warehouses and disused industrial sites. His motto is borrowed from Max Duley and goes like this: "Raving is a way of life. In fact, I'm raving right now. I'm going to bed soon and I'm gonna rave there too." If you like this mix, you may buy him a beer. Or a copy of “Uncharted”.

BTS Podcast 010 - Markus Masuhr

Oliver Hartmann aka Insect O. est un dj/producteur basé à Dresden (Allemagne).

Très jeune il est attiré par l'univers électronique. Sa musique est mélodique, rêveuse, teintée de vivacité mais toujours avec une touche de profondeur. Ses productions nous racontent son histoire, entre Dub et Deep Techno avec certaines influences de Detroit. Il s'inspire d'artistes comme Basic Channel, Rob Bois ou Jeff Mills. 

Fondateur du label Etui Records, Oliver produit des artistes comme Monomood, Marko Furstenberg, Hydergine, Quantec..

Son EP 'Bondi Dub' sorti en juin 2013 nous transmet son amour pour la Deep Techno tandis que son titre 'Birds Over Hong Kong' montre son engouement pour la techno plus rugueuse.

En 2014, il sort un remix d'Absolute Control de Monomood, ainsi qu'un remix pour Alessandro Crimi (Space Cocktail) qui se trouve d'ailleurs dans cette 36ème pulsation.

PARADOX PODCAST #005 -- MENTAL RESONANCE

Peter Lórencz est un dj/producteur Hongrois basé à Gödöllő (Hongrie). 
Enfant, il a été influencé par de nombreux genres musicaux grâce à ses parents musiciens. 

Il commence le DJing lors de fêtes scolaires, et en 2002, joue pour la première fois dans un club local. Pendant cette période, il étudie et travaille dur pour se payer des vinyles. Au fil du temps, il joue dans de nombreux clubs hongrois et se produit dans des émissions de radio.

En 2004 un de ses morceaux est choisi pour figurer sur une compilation Techno hongroise. En 2006, il compose l'hymne officiel du 1er Festival Techno hongrois. Il produit ensuite de la musique sous plusieurs alias, et remporte en 2011 un concours sur nugen.fm qui lui permettra de se faire connaître sous le pseudonyme Peter M. Lawrence.

Toujours amoureux de la musique, Peter compose pour de grandes écuries comme 124 Recordings ou Seamless, et travaille actuellement sur la création de son propre label.

Resident Advisor Label of the Month Mix September 2015

Merv is a mid 90's dub techno act coming from an isolated small island near Denmark. 

In the year 1995, arose "Melted Vein". Hypnotized, and very much inspired from the Basic Channel Berlin sound from that same year. 

Merv has always educed their own variation their own soul. You can hear it by the track "Dust", from 1998, another great masterpiece! Pads and melodies, from different galaxies, mixed with ascending chords, kept together with the 909. These two tracks, two epic tracks . 

The pure Merv magic is out again in 2015 on Styrax Records. A reissue that has been re-mastered at the traditionally Berlin Mastering Studios D&M!

TF #066: Agnosia [Dust Rec] - Spain

Agnosia, a duo formed by Eric and Miguel, producers with a long way behind the decks and productions.  Started on music scene 7 years ago, My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, Slowdive or Explosions in the sky are some of the inspirations of his personal “vision” of music. Now, with this project, they want to explore the atmospheric side of music.  Always walking between techno, shoegaze or post-rock, they started to produce 5 years ago, trying to show his personal way of music.

The music of Agnosia wants to innovate in the techno fields, adding some new ways with new elements and architectures in the compositions they do. Progressive to the end tracks, forcefulness and deep kicks and basslines, and some guitar distortions and effects to made epic the melodies they build.
Now, they have published his first Album on Dust REC. “Motion and Emotion”, focused in the experimentation with drones, textures and atmospheres but mixed with really forcefulness hypnotic grooves they will drive us crazy. 

"What’s happening? It's warm inside... She told me a reason, a reason to live. 

Where are my echoes? The rainfall from my friends, the pain fades into atmospheres, the void it’s comfortable, and me... I’m losing my head."

A mainstay of the Portland and Seattle scenes since the late 90's, Pacific Northwest native Trevor Vichas has entertained audiences with his mesmerizing blend of house, garage, and techno meets jazz, disco, and hip hop; warm rolling basslines, hypnotic chord progressions, and soulful vocals that speak with a message of love. With his production reflecting early influences of both classic Chicago and Detroit house and techno, it's not surprising that his love of all things funk, soul, hip-hop, and disco pulse through him; giving his unique sound the infectious ingredients that make you want to jump up and get out on the floor.

Trevor has held regular residencies in Portland and Seattle since 2005; he has traveled from Seattle to San Francisco to Honolulu to Miami pushing his sound to broader audiences and gaining popularity across the country, yet keeps his feet planted firmly in his own backyard by contributing to the progression of his local scene through booking national and international acts, further placing the Northwest on the map of “don’t miss” places to experience performing. Trevor has contributed guest mixes for some notable podcasts, including UglyHouse, House Salad, Jacking Beatz Collective, 5Magazine New Mix Mondays, and HAWT Music’s HAWTCast. Trevor currently maintains a residency on Chicago House FM and broadcasts both his personal sessions and live events on the Florida-based radio station.

Trevor launched into producing in 2008 and immediately received positive response to his creations, securing his tracks in playlists of industry heavy-hitters such as Mark Farina, DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Iz & Diz, Phil Weeks, Hector Morales, and DJ Heather. Additionally, Trevor has collaborated with notable artists such as Craig Hamilton, Andrew Lozano, Tommy Largo, and Terry Mullan; completed remixes for successful artists such as Chuck Love, Chemars, Filta Freqz, and Dave Allison, and has also found himself being remixed by the likes of Mark Castley, Flapjackers, Tom Special Interest, and Nonfiction. 

Trevor has had successful original and remixed works released on Robsoul Recordings, Flatpack Traxx, Phobic Recordings, Serial Sickness, Cabbie Hat Recordings, FLC Recordings, Bounce House Records, Market House Meats, Mighty Perverts, Greenhouse Recordings, Seventy Four, Ficus Tree, Union Recordings, Blue Gritt Records, Aspect Audio, Cotopaxi, Treasured Grooves, Skeet Traxx, Jack Locker Recordings, Mindshift Recordings, Freqy Music Group, Funk Mansion, Drizzle Music, Coyote Cuts, Dustpan Recordings, and Tight Recordings.

Hello and welcome back to The Poeticast. Happy new year to everyone. 2016 promises to be big, and to kick off in tremendous fashion we play host to one of Italy's most exciting electronic artists at the moment, Alfredo Mazzilli.

Alfredo was born in Southern Italy. Knowing and working with different organizations in Puglia, he played with some big artists, like Rodhad, Redshape, Tadeo and Unbalance.

In 2013, he joined with "Ways", organization, a party in the southern Italy. He became a resident, and had the privilege  and the opportunity to perform with famous artists including:

Svreca, Francois X, Dj Skirt, MAX_M, Dino Sabatini and Hiver.

Alfredo has been mastering his craft in the studio over the past few years and his productions have been released on Planet Rhythm, Edit Select, Silent Season, Blankstairs and Truth Or Consequences.

His first steps were in 2011 when he started experimenting with sound and studying Electronic Arts.

After some time developing his style and technics, in 2014 he debuts as producer releasing music in the well known label Planet Rhythm, delivering his first EP: Vexations, getting the support of artists like Henning Baer, Tensal, Marcel Dettmann, Bas Mooy, Ettap Kyle, and more.

He continues releasing music for labels like Weekend Circuit, Insula Records, Animal Farm, and a collaboration EP with Mental Resonance for Pfirter's label MindTrip Music.

Influenced by differents styles of the techno genre, his productions and sessions are charged of differents emotions, going throw deep and mental places, to others more focused on the floor.

Agnosia, a duo formed by Eric and Miguel, producers with a long way behind the decks and productions. Started on music scene 8 years ago. Always walking between techno, shoegaze or post-rock, they started to produce 4 years ago, trying to show his personal way of music.

Focused in the experimentation with drones, textures and atmospheres but mixed with really forcefulness hypnotic grooves they will drive us crazy.

Born in Spain, Juan Rico is a DJ who has rapidly attained the recognition other artists have taken a long time to gain. He marks his birth as a DJ about 1997, but it wasn’t until his first release in 2002 under the Swedish label Emergence that he became known professionally.  He has shown his quality skills recording for emerging imprints like Pole Recordings, Wolfskuil Records, and his very own Architectural label. 

The set, nearly two hours long was recorded at Bassiani as part of the Wolfskuil Records Night. It's a well-executed mix that focuses especially on the dark, ambient textures, crosscut with hints of hypnotic Dub techno. 
Displaying his impeccable taste in music, Architectural crosses varied musical fields, offers deep and adventurous mix contrasted with dancefloor edge.
