Madalba was born in July 1985 in Bari, Italy. From a very young age, her interest in different musical cultures such as house and dance music and also spread through rock and punk which eventually lead to techno and club-culture. At age 22 she approached the local scene as Djane with numerous performances in the club circuit of Bari. Through the years she has developed a continued and careful respect of the musical experience. She moved to Berlin and started DJing with only vinyl records. This helped build her strong reputation as an underground techno DJ. This provided opportunity for her to play in clubs such as Tresor, About Blank, SK Robinson, Mikz and Tacheles in Berlin where she lives today.

In September 2011, she moved to Detroit where she rocked some of the scene's most well known clubs like as The Works, Exodus and several others across the state in collaboration with DJ Seoul and Tom Linder of Detroit Techno Militia. This travel has definitely and radically changed her approach to the techno concept, which she considers more a social phenomenon and a lifestyle rather than just a musical genre.

In December 2011 she collaborated with the female crew Femme Fraktale. Since January 2012 she is resident of the party Homopatik in About Blank, Berlin. In May 2013 she joined the roster of Bang Tech 12 and was soon asked to join Detroit Techno Militia in April of 2014.

Her first release will be available on vinyl, as of September 2014, on Arkita Rec (Berlin), the label that spawned in collaboration with Synkopheit.

Jackie House is the alter-ego of Jacob Sperber one of the founding members of Honey Soundsystem. She has been a fixture on the San Francisco dance-music circuit for the last decade alongside touring the world with her buddies in the Honey crew. Aside from a speckling of singles, remixes, and mixtapes, Jacob runs the Honey Soundsystem record label alongside the now defunct Discaire Records. Part archivist, part activist he has used his various outlets to celebrate the rich history of dance-music and to fight for equality.

THE MIX:
Growing up in California in the days of turntablism and IDM I never thought the day would come that the two would align and with such incredible results. This mix is as much an homage to the day I moved 3 blocks from the apartment DJ Shadow made Entroducing to the day my CD copy of Oval - Systemisch got a scratch in it from repeated listens. From Soulection to Daybre to Q-Tip, I strung together this 70 minute mix with a lot of disparate compadre in mind. A friendship letter of sorts to a crew of people who all now live in far-off places but will certainly think of each other when they take the trip down this recording. 

Drowning in a 124 BPM world, making this mix was like a year of yoga on my ears.

Underground club music has a penchant for existing beneath the radar. Its parties squat in the sweat-soaked shadows of unsuspecting dive bars and undisclosed (RSVP for address) locations that are constantly threatened by gentrification and crackdowns by the authorities. Visibility is key to bolstering these vibrant communities but many exist beyond mainstream dance music culture, making them difficult to find outside major cities like New York, LA or Chicago. But still, the momentum behind the Southern and Midwestern experimental scenes is steadily growing and you can now find incendiary sounds across America's heartland.

Disparate cities such as Atlanta, Houston, Milwaukee and Ohio may receive less shine, but the crews and labels behind their respective homegrown subcultures are intent on making an impact. They choose to write their own rules. Pay attention.

Introduce yourself? Where do you live? Where are you from?

Hi! I’m Ma Sha from Russia :-) Currently based in Brooklyn, NY.
Fun fact: I’ve never eaten cucumbers!

Earliest musical influence?

My parents were big fans of Russian rock. So my childhood was filled with cool powerful tunes and memorable sweaty concert experiences. Later I started breakdancing and discovered a wide range of tunes I still listen to & play. It was everything from funk, hip hop, breaks to disco, world, and dub music. When I was a teenager, I spent a summer in the forest near Moscow in the breakdance camp. I remember our jam sessions in the middle of the forest dancing to djs spinning funk
records at 8AM. So cool!

Favorite club experience?

One of the experiences I can highlight was playing in one of my favorite spots in Brooklyn, Mezcaleria La Milagrosa. It is a hidden Mezcal club/bar behind the deli’s refrigerator door. I am super grateful to Felipe aka Felipe From BK :) for believing in me and letting me play when I was starting out as a dj. I ended up playing records for 4 hours and even had a small b2b with Felipe at the end!

Current gear set up?

I use two turntables, a two channel mixer, monitors for DJing and a MIDI controller/sequencer/keyboard for production. This mix was recorded on cdjs and Xone 92 mixer at Newtown Radio during one of the late nights :-) Shout out to Newtown for moving to a new spot and being an awesome community space.

I’ve been breakdancing all my teenage years, so my move would be the Russian knee-bending move aka the squat-and-kick dance. 


Favorite late night snack?

I am traveling in Colombia now and I got addicted to Arequipe, a creamy Colombian caramel spread. The golden rule: five spoons of Arequipe every night for sweet dreams  ̄\_(ツ)_/ ̄

What do you wish to see in the future for the dance community?

More experimentation with music/environment/space/vibe choices & willingness from the community to discover it! Less judgement towards each other. People dancing freely and expressing love to each other and music :-)

Looking at their catalogs, it's almost surprising that it took this long for Danny Daze and DeFeKt to join forces in the studio. The former has been soaking up electro vibes for decades in his native Miami, while the latter has long been practicing electro-techno alchemy from his outpost in Dublin, Ireland. On February 8, the pair's collaborative 'Pulmotor' EP will arrive via Daze's Omnidisc label, but ahead of that, we debuted the sinister sounds of "Positive Ventilation" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.
