Republic of Korea usually called South Korea, is a democratic state in East Asia. The country occupies the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The only neighboring country is North Korea to the north; South Korea borders the Yellow Sea (called the “West Sea” in South Korea) to the west, the East China Sea to the south, and the East Sea to the east. Since the Korean War (1950–1953), one of the largest proxy wars of the Cold War, the relationship between the two Korean states has been heavily strained. Totalitarian North Korea, which is largely isolated internationally, has regularly threatened to use nuclear weapons against South Korea in recent years, with great attention from the world public. Due to the general threat from North Korea, South Korea has one of the largest armed forces in the world in terms of the number of soldiers.

The country was completely destroyed by the Korean War and became one of the poorest in the world. From 1962 onwards there was a rapid economic upswing. The “Miracle on the Han River” transformed South Korea from a poor agricultural country into a highly modern, rich industrial state (“Tiger State”) within just a few decades. South Korean industry dominates the global market, especially in the production of ships and electronic products (such as semiconductors, microchips, flat screens and computers). South Korea is a member of several international economic organizations, e.g. B. the G20, the OECD, the APEC and ASEAN+3.

This massively escalated the conflict and is considered a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. As of April 1, 2022, 4.3 million people are internally displaced due to the war in the country. Seventy percent of the population depends on international aid for survival.
