is a politically self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The majority of the country's area consists of the world's largest island, located in the North Atlantic or Arctic Ocean. Geographically considered part of North America and geologically part of its Arctic subregion, it has the northernmost land area on Earth and is sparsely populated.

The entire population lives along the coast, primarily in the west of the country. Greenland was inhabited by Inuit in pre-colonial times before being colonized by Denmark-Norway in 1721 and becoming part of Denmark in 1814. Today, it is mainly inhabited by Kalaallit, who are of mixed Inuit and Scandinavian descent.

After more than two centuries as an isolated colony, primarily serving to supply Europe with animal oil, a Greenlandic national consciousness emerged at the end of the 19th century, and since the Second World War, the desire for self-determination has grown. As a result, Greenland was “decolonized” in 1953 and incorporated into the Kingdom of Denmark, after which extensive modernization measures were taken, which led to a revolution in the previously traditional society.

This resulted in social problems that continue to shape Greenlandic discourse today and, among other things, fueled a growing desire for greater autonomy. Greenland subsequently received autonomy in 1979, which was expanded in 2009. Since then, a public and political debate about full independence has raged.

As an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland has its own government and parliament and is politically independent from Denmark in most areas. However, full independence is currently viewed by the majority as unrealistic, as Greenland's economy relies almost entirely on fishing and, with its small but widely dispersed population and the resulting deficit between government revenue and expenditure, is financially dependent on Danish subsidies.
