The moon takes over from the sun, lighting up the dark night. Some moons are fiery, some are icy. Some are red, some are white, some are blue. What does the moon think about as it circles the earth? I had such an impression. Nice sound.

I wrote the lyric for this song after a family blackberrying expedition a few years ago. My old friend Gareth and I put some chords to it and recorded it. Lizzy Taypen said that she liked it a lot, so I took the opportunity to rope her in to sing with us. I listened to it again and thought that Lizzies vocal was very special and that I had missed the best version. So I mixed a version with only Lizzie singing and a more gentle support track. I thought that it was beautiful, it is the track  here.

Blackberrying

When the sun light falls in a steeply slanted angle
And the colours of the world fade to muted reds and golds
The living soil still holds it’s warmth and waning sweetness
As another summer gently slips from our aging fingers hold
We can still find simple joy in the things we did as children
Finding fruit among the bushes along the margins of our roads
with our adult children now
as we enjoy this timeless pleasure
Of finding fruits just hanging ripe and ready in the hedgerow
And taking them back home with us like edible treasure hoards

Folk don’t seem to bother now, to take the time to pick them
Still they grow and glow like jewels amongst natures topiary
A present from an old imagined ancient world of wonder
As sweet fruit drops into our hands from the realm of the fairyies
We stretch to reach the fullest ones, beyond reach in the branches
the nettles tingle our arms and legs if we fail to be wary
Then we carry home our bounty, taking great care not to spill them
and turn them into memories that we had very nearly lost
a refreshment for our hearts from our purple blackberries

Nakamura Teijo was a Japanese poet from Kumamoto. A great admirer of Sugita Hisajo, she started writing haiku poetry in 1918, when she was eighteen. In 1934 she joined the prestigious Hototogisu magazine and, in 1940, published her first poetry collection, Shunsetsu 春雪. In 1947 she launched a magazine called Kazabana, which she edited and supervised until her death, in 1988.

Night blooming

I'm a composer, working from a 3' x 5' studio (some may call it a dinette) in a 5th wheel camper, while traveling the United States. I've been on the road for six years, so most of my recent work will have come from a different state (of mind and location) during my travels.

Music makes me feel better about everything. I don't know that I'm ever happier than when I am creating. I sometimes wonder if creativity isn't one of the primary keys to happiness. Do you ever feel better than when you say, "Look what I did."? This phrase magically conjures the purest sense of childlike joy.

Music works for every part of our lives. We all have music for when we are sad, happy, celebrating, meeting others, when we are alone, and even when we are lonely. Did a song come to mind as you read each of those situations? I remember the first song I ever heard on the radio, on my first bus ride to kindergarten. One of my favorite musical memories is playing in a band for steel beach on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.

I love telling stories with music. Everybody loves John Coffey in the Green Mile, but Mr. Jingles should have a song commemorating his reaching and joining the circus at Mouseville. If you agree, join me for this and similar journeys. The music here is synthetic, but as real as you would choose to have it.
