I like this version very much, you made great fundamental additions! Really sounds like it was intendend as such from the start.

This track was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0522: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.
All sounds were created from the recording of an ice-cube rattling in five different glasses. The inspiration led to this piece, trying to find out how eternal ice sounds.

Initially, I thought Gabber wouldn't be my cup of tea, but archive.org had some really interesting modern Gabber tracks under a Creative Commons License. The song that appealed to me the most was from an Indonesian production (Gabber Modus Operandi - Puxxximaxxx, "Hey Nafsu", https://archive.org/details/yesno091).

Ninety-nine percent of the sounds came from the track. I chopped up the snippets with Voltage Modular, stretched them in Ableton, and maltreated them with long effects chains. To add a bit of Ambient cliche, I added the song of a humpback whale (because, why not – sometimes a track needs a pink fluffy unicorn ribbon).

It still sounds rough around the edges, but maybe there's a genre of noise ambient it fits into.

Disquiet Junto Project 0556: Gabber Ambient
The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.

Gabber and ambient music seem like polar opposites. Gabber is typified by a constant distorted kick drum pummelling you at upwards of 200bpm. Ambient, on the other hand, can be deeply immersive or barely noticeable. This project asks the question: is “gabber ambient” possible?

Step 1: Consider what makes gabber gabber and what makes ambient ambient. Where is there crossover?

Step 2: Make a track that could be construed as “gabba ambient.”

Step 3: You’re probably going to want to delete it. Try not to. Save and upload.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0556” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0556” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Disquiet Junto Project 0569: Think Thank
The Assignment: Make music inspired by something or someone you’re thankful for

Laurie Andersons "Big Science" was one of the first "avantgarde" LPs I owned in a time, when teens like me used to listen to Kim Wilde or so. I remember listening endlessly to especially "From The Air", "O Superman" and "Example #22". 

Since then the beginning of the "voice sample" from "Example #22" is what I speak into microphones to test them. And as I had a podcast recording this week, I started the track with a sample from this recording. 

I noodled it thru some granulators and added some other stuff. I absolutely wanted to add some "O superman"-vocoder-oh-ohs with a XILS V+ I bought last week (don't miss the 75% sales, especially the XILS 4 https://www.xils-lab.com/products/xils-4-p-148.html, and no, I'm not connected to Monsieur Oudin) and it nearly drove me insane to get Reaper and the V+ to run as a vocoder. But it worked. 

The resulting track may be considered as what I have in mind when I think of these tracks from Laurie Anderson, which I am thankful for. Please notice that it is 40 years since "Big Science" – wtf am I old …

Mizuhara Shuoshi was a 20th century Japanese poet. Shuoshi rebelled against the principles of emotional detachment in haiku, which he thought limited his ability to emotionally express himself through poetry: he started a magazine called Staggerbush which focused on a more romantic, lyrical type of haiku.

Disquiet Junto Project 0572: Rhythm Kit
The Assignment: Make a beat that someone else will add to.

Note: This project is the first of a two-parter. You don’t need to participate in both, and you can easily participate in the second one (next week) even if you don’t participate in the first one.

Instruction: Record a beat with the intension that someone other than yourself will add something to it at a later date. It’s preferable that you record something that lasts between one and three minutes, but it’s also fine to record something shorter with the intention that someone will loop it — or something longer, for that matter.

I always like when one of the more beat-oriented prompts comes up because it gets me to think about rhythm tools, which I'm fairly inconsistent with. 

I thought I would would use my modular synth to generate the beat starting with a trio of samplers triggered by dividing and multiplying clock dividers. The resulting three samples are then routed through some signal manipulation: a wasp filter, stereo delay and Make Noise Morphagene. I also had some fun with a sample and hold which controls the pitch CV of one of the samples.

Last week, Daniel Diaz's lovely jazz-oriented track stuck for me as something I'd like to rework.

Without a really clear idea of where I wanted to take the track, I started by adding some sombre synth sounds over the top of Daniel's rhythm track and listening back to where things were going. I then listened to the harmonic aspects of the chord progression and reached out for my Telecaster, coaxing a kind of Bill Frissel meets Brokeback (via Tortoise) vibe...I think. Lastly, I added a little phasing to the rhythm track during the guitar solo and outro.

Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).
