DJ NATURE DISCO MIX (2024) PART 1. (PERSONAL EDITS & BITS)

For the next instalment of our Record Club Mix series we head to Paris, with a brilliant mix from Matthieu Biron aka Matt Ma Moustache. 

Born in Brittany, Matt also originates from Martinique (West Indies), which has had massive influence on his musical tastes. A respected digger and DJ, his love of disco, modern soul, funk, gospel, Afro and West Indian grooves has seen him support the likes of Antal, Mendel, Esa, Gino Grasso, Louise Chen and The Mighty Zaf. Back in 2018, Matt also co-founded one of Paris’ top listening bars @frequencebarparis, a vinyl only cocktail bar highlighting some of the best diggers and DJs from around the world. 

“In this mixtape I really wanted to play what I enjoy the best and what we play the most often at Frequence. The tempo is going up song after song to catch the audience in an uplifting atmosphere and make them dance. Different music styles are showcased here : Disco, Boogie, African and Gospel. 

First, three beautiful gospel records set the tone as I love to start with that style or zouk. Following there’s a record with a great cover of Candy Bowman ‘Since  I Found You’ by Crossroads. After that, two magic Disco records that became classic at Frequence over the course of years (almost 7 now): Thunderstorm - Summer Love and Jean Carn - Super Explosion. The superb song to finish from Joe and Lee - ‘Black Gold Disco Moving Machine’ hits with a lot of energy; this one should become a classic dancefloor track in my opinion. 

I always try and play different styles wherever I am, to catch as many people in the audience as possible. This sort of became my trademark if I may say. The mix is 100% vinyl, all from my personal collection that I’ve dug around the world. It was recorded on two Technics and a DJR 200 (during a rainy day ^^).”

Big thanks to Matt for the mix - he will be playing in Canada in a few weeks time and for the first time in Brazil in 2025.

Corona Queens born, but with a long formative stretch growing up in Nebraska, and from Jamaican roots, (Derrick Harriott is an uncle), Brooklyn's Duane Harriott is as unique and specific as that trajectory indicates. One of our longtime NY peeps, Duane has always taken his own path and carved out a meaningful sensibility away from the various trends that come and go. (bearded hipster take note!) One of the founding residents of NYC's famed APT, Duane has played at pretty much every significant NY spot high and low for the past 15 years. One of the leading producers and remixers in contemporary dance music, Cambridge raised Ray Mang, (Raj Gupta) hardly needs an intro. Under the name Ray Mang, (also under Laj, Sir Raymond Mang, Block 16, & Motif) he has written and recorded tracks with people like Jon Lucien, Bim Sherman, Jhelisa, Kier Kerby, Robert Owens and Mozez. He has also remixed tracks for disco heroes like Roxy Music, Banda Black Rio, Terry Callier, Freddie Mercury, Beck, Shirley Bassey, Bryan Ferry and Grace Jones amongst others. You can find his remixes and original material on labels like Bearfunk, DFA, Eskimo, Under the Shade, Noid, and his own Mangled label. Raj is a busy man with tons of stuff coming out, so we are very happy he made time for this great set. Direct from Italy, these fine gents brought with them and DJ'ed the most insane, jaw-dropping collection of Italian library records and soundtracks. As you will hear, these good lads have skills behind the decks. As per usual, this set was recorded direct onto tape at the Hyperion Tavern in Los Angeles and was not edited in any way. Enjoy!
