Very good recording. I like the bittern sound. Its very powerful and I can feel it in my body.

Ninety minutes before sunrise. A magical time, still pretty dark, when everything is beginning to stir including: curlew, snipe, sedge warblers, reed bunting, tawny owl, cuckoo, redshank, shoveler...and distant peacocks!

Enjoy 15 minutes of an unusually quiet dawn by a reedbed pool at Faxfleet, East Yorkshire on the banks of the Humber, recorded at 6.30am on Easter Sunday 2023. Includes moorhen, wren, water rail, wood pigeon, little grebe, Cetti's warbler, bearded tit, chiffchaff, curlew, coot, greylag goose.

Bitterns ( Botaurus stellaris) with Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus), Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris), Savi’s Warbler (Locustella luscinioides), Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago), Spotted Crake (Porzana porzana)... and others.

Bitterns Booming

This entry won the Habitat section in the 2015 WSRS Recording Competition. It was also awarded the Silver Fox Trophy for best recording. 

These 2-minutes were selected from a 2-hour recording, made with a pair of MKH406’s arranged ORTF in a homemade wind cage placed on a tripod in the reed bed. The recorder used was a Fostex FR-2LE. 

The marsh was at Barrage Imi-N-Laârba, near the town of Aït Ouri, 50km from Marrakesh. As well as crickets, the main species heard are the deeper-voiced Berber Toads (Amietophrynus mauritanicus), Sahara Frog (Pelophyllax saharicus) and the rasping sounds of Mediterranean Tree Frogs (Hyla meridionalis).
