Having grown up in a musical family, the mystical sounds of her alevitic environment engaged her interest very early, followed by classical music, Jazz and Latin-American sounds. EMRAH OGUZTÜRK is recognized as an virtuoso for middle eastern wind instruments who plays the Mey and Zurna as well as the Kaval and Duduk. He is also at home with the Greek gaida. KORAY BERAT SARI and ORKUN AGIR are adept in building an musical bridge with Saz and Guitar between tradition and modernity; virtuous, uncompromising, always trusting new intuitions.

*HAY WAY WAXT thematisiert den staatlichen Völkermord an den Kurden in Dersim zwischen 1937-1938. Zehntausende Zivilisten und Widerstandleistende verloren dabei ihr Leben. Tausende Kinder wurden ihren Familien entrissen, um diese als ethnische Türken aufzuziehen. HAY WAY WAXT ist auch der Soundtrack für den gleichnamigen Dokumentarfilm, der 2013 den Spezialpreis der Jury in der Kategorie Dokumentarfilm des ‚Altin Portakal – Goldene Orange Filmfestivals’ in Antalya gewann.

Found in 2012, Nor Ashkhar is a multicultural group formed in the Netherlands in which they put their prints in the Anatolian, Kurdish, Armenian music traditions.
Coming from diversified musical and cultural backgrounds, the musicians unite their experiences to provide this music a new vision and approach by recreating their own arrangements.
Nor Ashkhar wants to create a new input and interpretation of Anatolian, Kurdish and Armenian music. Its repertoire covers a large range of styles from traditional to modern and contemporary music. Nor Ashkhar includes also several vocal works.

Troubadour des multikulturellen Syriens

Ibrahim Keivo wurde 1966 in einem yesidisch-kurdischen Dorf in der Nähe der Kleinstadt Hassakeh in Nordsyrien geboren. Er ist Sohn einer armenischen Familie, die den Völkermord überlebt hat. Er wuchs auf im Dreiländereck, wo sich altes syrisches Land (Al-Jezireh = Die Insel) mit mesopotamischen und vorderasiatischen Kulturen treffen: eine Kulturlandschaft mit reicher Vergangenheit, in der eine Vielzahl von Religionen praktiziert und ebenso viele Sprachen und Dialekte gesprochen wurden.  Seit seiner frühsten Jugend führte Ibrahim Keivo’s Mutter ihn in die armenischen Gesänge ein, die sie aus ihrer Heimat mitgebracht hatte. Sie war für ihn auch die erste Lehrerin, die ihm Lieder beibrachte, die auf Türkisch, Kurdisch und Mardalli (dem arabischen Dialekt aus der Stadt Mardin) gesungen und gespielt wurden. Die uralte Stadt Mardin liegt im Südosten der Türkei, wenige Kilometer nördlich der Grenze zu Syrien und nicht weit bis zur Grenze des Irak. Sie war zu Zeiten des Genozid Zwischenstation für viele Armenier, bevor sie Zuflucht und Exil in der ganzen Welt fanden.  Mit der Ankunft in Nordsyrien begegnete Keivo auch neuen Kulturtraditionen: den Beduinen. In ihrer Kultur sind Elemente der ältesten  Zivilisationen und Religionen der Menschheit lebendig geblieben: die assyrische Kultur mit der aramäischen Sprache. Er begegnet aber auch der syrische Sprache (die mit der heutigen Sprache in Syrien, dem Arabisch nichts zu tun hat), dem orthodoxen Christentum, der Kultur der Yeziden, einer alten Naturreligion, die von den in der Region lebenden Kurden praktiziert wurde und deren heiligster Ort, der Lalish Tempel im heutigen Mosul (dem alten Ninive im Irak) liegt.

The kurdish singer Sakina Teyna (Trio Mara, Anatolian Quartett etc.) is embodying Anatolian music traditions as different blossoms of a common tree: with tenderness, full of an eruptive power, she is singing turkish, armenian, persian, her own and songs in all the kurdish languages, modest with western harmonies and laced with strains of Jazz and Latin. In doing so she invades layers of the soul which neither occident nor orient knows. An totally unexplored territory. In her adopted home Vienna she gathered a choice boyband around herself, each one a master and an aficionado in his subject: the persian Jazz-Wizard Mahan Mirarab at guitars and setar, the turkish violinist Efe Turumtay, the kurdish artists Özgür Yarar at kaval, ney and saz and the allways orient affine percussionist Jörg Mikula. As a political kurdish acitivist from the beginning on, Sakina Teyna is embodying a kurdish consciousness fitting in this age with her timeless chansons, which in the teeth of all obstacles and in a feminine, sophisticated and anti nationalistic way  rescues a common Anatolian past into a human future. A future which we can all participate in.

'Mara' is Zazaki, which is one of the oldest native languages in the Middle East. It means BY US.

Mara draws from the rich treasure of traditional Kurdish songs. They express them anew in their own particular way by contrasting classical and contemporary music. Presented in a way only women can sing them these songs turn into a great experience.

Sakina
SAKINA began her career self taught, as an autodidact, before she received professional education and voice training.
In the 90′s she was a member of the Mesopotamian Culture Centre, a Kurdish artists association based in Istanbul but acting throughout all of Turkey. Its members suffered various reprisals by the government because of their Kurdish lyrics. Some of them paid their artistic dedication with their lives.
During this time she organized many (due to the government led forbiddance of the Kurdish language until the late 90s) illegal concerts, until eventually she was forced to flee.
She continued her work in Armenia, Syria and Kurdish-Irak.
Currently she is living in Vienna.
Since 2008 she has become increasingly involved with human rights issues in particular women’s rights issues.
She views her music as a way portraying the life of people in the Kurdish regions. She realizes this with a sensitive performance of striking melodies by which suffering and melancholy, courage for life and yearning become palpable.

Naze Isxan
Naze Isxan began to play piano at the age of six. The pianist graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in Krasnodar as a concertmaster and music teacher. Since the end of the nineties, she has given concerts in Russia at first and since 2001 she also appears on a regular basis in other European countries. 
She has a passion for Kurdish music that she would like to introduce to a wider non-Kurdish audience in her concerts. Therefore, she also arranged traditional Kurdish melodies for piano and published the first Kurdish music book for piano in 2004 (Evina Kurdistane - Bona Pianoforte).

Nure Dlovani
Nure Dlovani is a solo violinist who also works as a teacher for violin and piano. She received her professional education at the conservatories in Moscow, Erevan, and Frankfurt. 
Her repertory is rich and comprises classical music and pop as well as sound tracks or crossover performances with the New Philharmonics in Frankfurt. She also works with a variety of well-known Kurdish musicians both in the studio and as a solo violinist in live concerts.

Sakîna & Friends met each other for the first time two years ago in Vienna. They display their common repertoire on their first joint album Longing on the label Ahenk. However, the words Longing and Expectation also have Kurdish and Persian names: Bendewarî and İntizar. 
Multilingualism is here the key element. The Kurdish singer Sakîna Teyna breaks away from the style of her previous albums Royê Mi / My Soul, Derî / Behind The Doors (with the Trio Mara) and The Bridge / Köprü (with Anadolu Quartet) and moves on into jazzy terrain. 
She is accompanied by musicians who are at home in both world music and jazz: Ensemble director, guitarist and composer Mahan Mirarab has written most of the arrangements. They are rooms of encounter for violinist Efe Turumtay, clarinetist Oscar Antolí and drummer and Tombak player Jörg Mikula and where the incomparable Iranian singer Golnar Shahyar meets for a duet with Sakîna.
All tracks were recorded live in the Czech SONO Studios.The combination of these five various temperaments establishes a common language in which our common hope for a peaceful, fulfilling world can be expressed and experienced. This is what the eponymous longing refers to. They invite you to experience the richness of merging different cultures, languages and melodies - without fear. The five show how it works. 
The album‘s songs can be heard not only in the three Kurdish dialects Kurmanji, Zazaki and Sorani, but also in Turkish, Armenian, Persian and Azerbaijani. The songs‘ melodies complement each other in a highly harmonious way, although they originate from a region of the world, which is characterized by contradictions, cultural and political conflict. Multilingualism can be a common language.

Discription & Biography

'Mara' is Zazaki, which is one of the oldest native languages in the Middle East. It means BY US.

Mara draws from the rich treasure of traditional Kurdish songs. They express them anew in their own particular way by contrasting classical and contemporary music. Presented in a way only women can sing them these songs turn into a great experience.

Sakina
SAKINA began her career self taught, as an autodidact, before she received professional education and voice training.
In the 90′s she was a member of the Mesopotamian Culture Centre, a Kurdish artists association based in Istanbul but acting throughout all of Turkey. Its members suffered various reprisals by the government because of their Kurdish lyrics. Some of them paid their artistic dedication with their lives.
During this time she organized many (due to the government led forbiddance of the Kurdish language until the late 90s) illegal concerts, until eventually she was forced to flee.
She continued her work in Armenia, Syria and Kurdish-Irak.
Currently she is living in Vienna.
Since 2008 she has become increasingly involved with human rights issues in particular women’s rights issues.
She views her music as a way portraying the life of people in the Kurdish regions. She realizes this with a sensitive performance of striking melodies by which suffering and melancholy, courage for life and yearning become palpable.

Naze Isxan
Naze Isxan began to play piano at the age of six. The pianist graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in Krasnodar as a concertmaster and music teacher. Since the end of the nineties, she has given concerts in Russia at first and since 2001 she also appears on a regular basis in other European countries. 
She has a passion for Kurdish music that she would like to introduce to a wider non-Kurdish audience in her concerts. Therefore, she also arranged traditional Kurdish melodies for piano and published the first Kurdish music book for piano in 2004 (Evina Kurdistane - Bona Pianoforte).

Nure Dlovani
Nure Dlovani is a solo violinist who also works as a teacher for violin and piano. She received her professional education at the conservatories in Moscow, Erevan, and Frankfurt. 
Her repertory is rich and comprises classical music and pop as well as sound tracks or crossover performances with the New Philharmonics in Frankfurt. She also works with a variety of well-known Kurdish musicians both in the studio and as a solo violinist in live concerts.

Sakîna & Friends begegneten einander vor zwei Jahren in Wien. Nach dem ersten gemeinsamen Album "Longing" präsentiert sich die kurdische Sängerin Sakîna Teyna nun in neuem stilistischem Umfeld, weniger geprägt von traditioneller Musik denn vom Jazz. 

Den Großteil der Arrangements hat Ensembleleiter und Gitarrist Mahan Mirarab geschrieben, dem mit Geiger Efe Turumtay, Klarinettist Oscar Antolí sowie Schlagzeuger und Tombak-Spieler Jörg Mikula erfahrene Mitstreiter zur Seite stehen. Die Band um Sakîna Teyna - so die Selbstbeschreibung - "lädt dazu ein, den Reichtum der Begegnung verschiedener Kulturen, Sprachen und Melodien zu erfahren - ganz ohne Furcht". Die Songs sind nicht nur in den drei kurdischen Dialekten Kurmanji, Zazaki und Sorani verfasst, auch auf türkisch, armenisch, persisch und aserbaidschanisch wird gesungen. Gemeinsamer Nenner ist die Vielsprachigkeit.

TRIO MARA - Sari Gyalin - Սարի Գելին - Instrumental - Rouge Mix

Sakina was born into a Kurdish Alevite family in the small town of Varto in Turkey. As a teenager she started singing with Turkish choirs and bands, but it wasn’t until she entered university that she became acquainted with Kurdish musical traditions and set out to defy cultural assimilation. In 1991 she joined the Mespotamian Cultural Centre in Istanbul, a proponent of Kurdish culture, as a vocalist. Like many other Kurdish musicians, she was forced to literally go underground to practise her music and soon she had to choose political activism over art.

It wasn’t until Sakina arrived to Austria as a political refugee in 2006 that she took to singing as a full-time pursuit again. The first fruit of her concentrated creative efforts were released in the form of her first solo album ROYÊ MI, globally distributed by ARC Music.

Sakina joined forces with pianist Nazê Îşxan and violinist Nurê Dilovanî to form the all-female TRIO MARA, drawing on traditional Kurdish songs mainly sung by and handed down from woman to woman, enrichening the material with Western classical and contemporary approaches. In 2013 the trio released their first album DERI / BEHIND THE DOORS, recorded live at the Rudolf Ötker Hall in Bielefeld. The album was distributed by AHENK MÜZIK and earned the trio a wider acknowledgement. They were included in the portfolio of the Secretary of Culture of North-Rhine Westfalia and publicly commissioned to tour a number of venues in the region.

Since 2013 Sakina works with another group, the ANADOLU QUARTETT, touring Austria and Germany. Their first tour is successfully documented in the form of the live album KÖPRÜ/THE BRIDGE (Ahenk Müzik), a recording that reached a large audience and garnered the group critical recognition.

On top of all that, Sakina has established the Vienna-based ensemble “Sakina & Friends” featuring musicians from Iran, Spain, Austria and Turkey. They regularly perform throughout Austria, where Sakina appears on a lot of album projects and concert bills, never tired to support other artists.
