Selecting tunes for releases on Samurai Music is difficult as there is so many great tunes on offer. The absolute cream of what we get sent makes it to releases on vinyl, so resisting the temptation of digital only releases creates a backlog of high quality tunes. Outliers is a collection of music from the Samurai family of artists that were all in contention for vinyl release, but for one reason or another slipped through the cracks. Most of these are still in heavy rotation in many of our DJ sets, so rather than hogging them, we put together a collection for a Bandcamp only release. Most of these have never been played by more than a few select Samurai DJ’s and the producer themselves. Outliers shows the depth of talent these producers have with these sitting on their HD’s without a home. We don’t plan on moving into the digital only release field any time soon so maybe we can have this series as a semi regular substitute.

gyrofield is synonymous with some of the most imaginative drum and bass of the new decade, a central pivot in their broad discography ranging from Noise to Acid Jazz to Techno. 

She defines herself as a musician, writer, queer, neurodivergent, and is currently based in Utrecht.

started drumming and singing in the chorus from the 4th grade, the following year hiphop exploded on the scene and sparked a desire as a child with a pen and pad to write rhymes daily for over a decade. studied classical music from Zsigmond, a protege of Kodály Zoltán. shortly after acid house, techno and breakbeat music ensued to the ears and salivated the pallette. after high school the first  purchase was a pair of used 1210's in a coffin with a shoddy 2 channel realistic mixer, it also came with a few milkcrates of freestyle, electro and early hiphop vinyl, at the same time drum and bass and jungle tracks were emerging, early metalheadz, suburban base and moving shadow were these new labels that were utterly captivating my attention and wallet, then breakbeatscience in nyc opened and started mail order in the internet's earlier days. 

a few years later the sp 202 came out and was the next logical step, as I had upgraded to a mixer with basic sampling capabilities and the sp202 just brought it to a portable exponential level. < a year later, the DR-202 was added while I had been learning Cubase and Reason and the wonders of MIDI exploration began. Soon after an SU-700, a DX-10, an EA-1 and an ER-1 as well. Later transitioned to FL for a DAW as it was much quicker in workflow.  

Later apprenticed at Razormaid Records under Joseph Watts; where I learned regioning, eq'ing and mastering, from a pioneer of dance music itself.

Performed for crowds > 2,000 as an emcee, and as a DJ opened for Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and the Swans. 

The past 20 years have been mostly introspecting, learning and understanding self, traveling, connecting with the earth and her guardians. Listening and mirroring, the sky the earth, the fire and aire. The music was in my heartbeat I would mirror with a handdrum or the layers of pressures colliding within. To strum strings or bow them. They can encompass us, impact our moods and project them.
