It has been just over a month since I left Black Rock City for the 5th time, and this marks an annual turning point for me. Today is my birthday, and I have one last gift to give you this year my crazy Playa friends.  Today my thoughts shift from: wishing I could teleport back to all the amazing moments we shared together just one month ago, to focusing on the productive 11 months ahead, until we meet again in  the dust.  I hope this mix will allow you to breathe a deep relaxing exhale, grounding yourself back to "reality", and inspire the same thoughts of excitement in you, until we meet again - in Black Rock City.

In the month of June, when living gets easy and temperatures are rising, it is the perfect time to enjoy a tropical cocktail. And it couldn’t get more tropical than with today’s special. 100% natural, refreshing and healthy: the coconut, cracked open by no one less than the Sol Selectas label head, Sabo.  

Sabo’s name has long been held in high esteem with the Afro-Latin House and the Moombahton scene. Today, Sabo is digging deeper into Tribal and Tech sounds. Behind the decks, his innovative approach to each DJ set makes him a consistent stand out at Festivals like Coachella, Lightening in a Bottle, Shambhala, Fusion, Symbiosis, Desert Hearts, Further Future, and Burning Man’s Robot Heart bus.  

As a label boss, he is known for his dynamic vision. Sol Selectas started back in 2004 as vinyl only imprint and platform for Sabo’s remixes and mashups. Today the label captures a wide array of sounds, enlisting up and coming underground producers from all over the globe, as well as prominent well-known producers in the industry, focusing the sound on deep spiritual dance music, guiding its listeners into the future realm with positive intention. 

Sabo once said he likes to DJ outdoors within nature, where he feels connected to the Earth when dancing. His sets always tell a story, with lots of tribal percussions, this time filled with super chilled out vibes and foot tapping downtempo beats. It’s never aggressive, but always groovy. You can literally hear the waves breaking into a magical turquoise lagoon, filled with colorful tropical fish and fringed by palms, when sipping off this delicious Coconut.  

By the way did you know that plastic straws make the top 10 list of litter items on beaches? One of the best way to reduce your plastic footprint is to avoid using plastic straws and use stainless steel straws instead. As we did for Sabo’s coconut

August's full moon in Aquarius was by far one of my most memorable and magical nights in Toronto period ✨🔮 Basking under the rays of the moon, on a gorgeous rooftop in the downtown core, with the most open and lit audience... it was truly a symbiotic creative moment for me, inspiring what I'd say is the best set I've ever spun.

This ecstatic dance live set was bookended by a cacao ceremony at the beginning and followed by a closing sound bath. On this winding journey, you'll find delicious, rhythmically-focused dance music from all around the globe - Middle East, India, West Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, Central America, and South America - that combines textures and sounds from times past with contemporary dance and popular music.

Originally from a tiny town in Michigan, Sarah moved to Toronto in 2012 to complete an MA in Ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto after finishing a BA in Music in Michigan. She became a professional drummer/percussionist at age 15, and somehow her love of punk, ska, and metal evolved into a deep study of Western classical & avant-garde music. During her BA, she fell in love with West African drumming, and traveled all over Ghana while studying traditional percussion & dance at the University of Ghana in 2011.

After moving to Toronto, Sarah began studying and performing percussion from Bali, Java, Brazil, and India. She also performed for many years in indie bands such as O Frontera, The Northen Empties, John Orpheus, Oxford Blue, Ghost Caravan, and Catch Fiyah. With these bands, she's toured and played across the US & Canada, as well as festivals like NXNE, MixTO, and CMW. Music from these groups has had placements in Kim's Convenience, virgins!, and an Off White x Jimmy Choo Paris Fashion Week campaign.

In 2017, Sarah started throwing an event series called Haus Orpheus with bandmate & business partner John Orpheus. Haus Orpheus featured pan-African artists, dancers, DJs, poets, musicians, and vendors in an art gallery in downtown Toronto. Sarah had been on the aux cable nonstop at these events, so under the encouragement of her band mates & community members, Sarah started DJing.

As a DJ, Sarah finally had an outlet to share her love & library of popular, underground, and electronic African music that she had been collecting since she lived in Ghana. In 2018, Sarah founded the all-African music party Afro Haus, a now infamous & vibrant community in downtown Toronto of local afro DJs, musicians, dancers, visual artists, performance artists, and producers. 

Sarah has also co-produced the event series Urban Jungle, Haus Orpheus, and Wickxd Womxn.
