Steevio is perhaps one of the most influential electronic artists
you’ve never come across. With more than forty years of
knob-twiddling experience, this modular magician boasts
enough cable to bring you to the moon and back. Away from
the blinking racks, Steevio runs music festivals, like
Freerotation, manages record labels and generally paves the
way. Now this pioneer and Firescope are teaming up for a very special EP.
With Acatalepsy, this veteran dives deep into his machines before resurfacing with four tracks of melting organic
techno. “Tarantism” comes to life with drums, percussive textures that prove fertile ground for ever more
intricate patterns while orange blossom keys bloom. From understated chatter, a hive of beats soon forms around
“Cynefin” as dewy notes float on the warmth of a new dawn. The natural world is an integral part of these
compositions, the industrious movement of rhythms, the change and reshaping that comes with growth. Another
presence on the 12” is the musician himself and his own influences. These early inspirations come to the fore in
the hazy hi-hats of “Oxytocin” with its satellite-like bleeps and dreamy basslines that echo both the armchair and
club of sounds of 90s techno. Those bleeps grow ever more distant in the fragile finale of “Intonation.” A melody
precariously perches, thawing like ice, above delicate echoes that ghost behind modular bulges as drums fade.
Acatalepsy encapsulates the ephemeral nature of sound. Through this selection of one-off recordings, through
these live jam sessions, Steevio captures a palpable and primal energy with an expert’s ear. An EP that casts spells
from beginning to end, an EP from a true waveform wizard.

Anthony Child, aka Surgeon, has been a regular fixture since first appearing at Freerotation in 2011. His recent exploration of modular synthesis and use of the Buchla Music Easel has found a home in the ambient yurt at the festival, and equally has manifested in album projects such as 2015’s Electronic Recordings From Maui Jungle Vol 1. “Unconscious Fearless Determination” follows on from this more experimental, less dancefloor-focused side to Child’s work, while still pulsing with the techno fundamentals that quickly defined him back in the mid ‘90s.

Duckett hails from North Wales, and has been a key part of the Freerotation fabric since the beginning of the event. After some releases on Mindtours, MindYourHead and Sthlmaudio back in the mid-‘00s, his music has started to reach a new audience through releases on UntilMyHeartStops and a clutch of lauded live performances. “Breaks My Heart When I Remember That Day” captures the alien synthesis and emotional heft that singles Duckett out as such a remarkable artist.

Steevio is the co-founder of Freerotation and Mindtours Records, responsible for a huge swathe of techno releases reaching back to the ‘90s. As well as his releases on Mindtours, he has recently appeared on UntilMyHeartStops and in collaboration with Pev on Schmorgabsord, and is set to appear on Russ Gabriel’s new label Rivers Of Groove. With its expressive swells of off-kilter melody and snaking drum lines, “Pendulum” continues the thread of exploration Steevio has been following on his journey into experimental modular techno. 

Tom Ellis has been prolifically issuing forth material in a soul-enriched space in between house, techno and funk for more than ten years. From running the acclaimed Trimsound label to releasing albums and singles on Telegraph, Archipel, Hartchef Discos and more recently Ethereal Sound to name but a few, Tom’s recorded work and immersive live performances continue to reach out to new moods and timbres. “As A Take” finds Tom at his most reflective, layering on dubby effects and organic instrumentation in a truly meditative end to the EP.

The fog loomed ominously above the lake. The waters rippled beneath the slightest breeze deep in the countryside. The trees beside the pool shook and the leaves rattled softly in the glow of the afternoon. In the distance a little boat could be seen rowing back and forth upon the lake. Sat within were two men, cloaked and equipped for the long journey which lay before them. This would take a long time. 

Steevio is set to release a new EP on Eye Shadow, the third in their catalogue. Intricate techno with a dusty twist.

Anyone who’s followed Steevio over the years will know all too well that the Freerotation man is an individual well accustomed to producing intriguing and always ­interesting electronic music. As such, his acquisition by Spanish label Clock Poets is a perfect fit. He perks up here with three intricate jams, the likes of which were all recorded in one take and are very much indicative of the producer as his dizzying best. 

Kicking off the release is the sounds of ‘Fairphone’. A rough-­and­ready analogue cut that’s notable for its off­-kilter methods and raucous vibes, its scatter­ gun approach is a true treat to behold. Taking the listener on a journey that’s always fascinating but never predictable, the track is an eerie yet wonderful cut that’s sure to sound particularly fresh in Steevio’s much ­renowned live sets.

For the second release on their recently launched imprint, Circle Of Live is proud to present Live At Freerotation 2018.

The follow-up to Loop For Today is comprised of select cuts from an improvised live performance during this year's Freerotation festival.The artists took over the main stage with an unscripted, freeform live performance from open till close.

Offering a recorded first glimpse into the free-flowing experimental set-up currently touring top European venues, the EP is a collaborative soundscape with contributions from Dorisburg, Johanna Knutsson, Mathew Jonson, Sebastian Mullaert and Steevio.With no prior planning whatsoever aside from an agreed BPM, the recording presented on this unique release offers a snapshot into the imperfections and charm of truly improvised live performance - a refreshing notion in today’s overproduced musical climate. Conceptually, the EP can be understood as more of an open-ended argument in favour of spontaneity and collaboration than a collection of tracks.

Envisioned and created by Sebastian Mullaert, Circle Of Live represents an organic process which aims to detach itself from the habitual routines of dance music, to allow the weird and wonderful elements of collaborative performance to truly come to life. Utilising Sebastian’s unique live set-up which can accommodate any number of participants at once, artists drop in and out and collaborate as much or as little as they like.

COL002 captures the best of Circle Of Live at Freerotation, an odyssey of sound, with rich textures providing a grounding for playful melodic and percussive improvisations. Gently rolling kick and bass patterns drift in and out, carrying the listener along, whilst analogue call and responses showcase the pure synergy of the artistic interplay.

Sebastian Mullaert and Circle Of Live continue to tour Europe with select guest performers and have upcoming shows in Barcelona (Nov 24th @Nitsa), Amsterdam (Dec 14th @Shelter), Berlin (Dec 20th @Funkhaus), Munich (Jan 11th @Blitz), Brussels (Jan 26th @Fuse) and London (Feb 2nd @Village Underground).
