This is a recording of a suspension bridge via a Geofón (geophone). Geophones were originally designed to measure seismic movement so they are a lot of fun to experiment with for field recording. A magnet attached the microphone to one of the hollow metal pillars. The sound was then edited via Logic Pro

Suspension Bridge via Geofon

In a nondescript alleyway in South Dunedin, the Dunedin Gasworks Museum houses some of the world's best-preserved gasworks machinery. During my visit, I explored their machine room, where I found five examples of stationary steam engines. I decided to attach a LOM Geofón to one of these engines to capture the sounds it produced. The rhythmic sound I heard was created by the mechanical lubricators that apply oil to the piston. I recorded the sound using a Zoom F6 and edited it using Apple Logic.

A stereo recording of a pretty large colony of Red-Bill Gulls next to the Otago Yacht Club. The microphone used was AT BP4025 and the recorder was a Zoom F6. The audio file was then edited and tweaked in Apple Logic

During a recording trip to the Chatham Islands, I came across this hive near one of my recording sites. I carefully positioned my AT BP4025 stereo microphone as close as I felt safe to the hive. I recorded the sound with my Zoom F6 and edited it in Apple Logic. For an immersive experience that feels like bees buzzing around your head, be sure to listen with headphones!

This is the sound of a Moriori paua shell necklace created by Moriori culture bearer and storyteller Deb Goomes. This necklace was inspired by the traditional Moriori story of  Etchu Whakatau whose paua shell necklace was jingling and making music after he jumped over the Hikurangi Channel. This sound was recorded at Kopinga Marae on Rékohu (Chatham Islands). The sound was recorded with an AT 4025bp stereo microphone into a Zoom F6 recorder. The sound file was then edited via Apple Logic

Moriori Paua Necklace

This track is a collaboration between Moriori musician Ajay Peni and field recordist Steve Ting, featuring the Taonga puoro talents of Alister Fraser. All sound effects were recorded on Rēkohu (Chatham Islands) by Steve, and the original music was performed and mixed by Ajay.
