Thoraya & Gashtyar - Astromalia IV - Live Set with Setar

Internationally acclaimed Iranian musician, Maestro Hamid Motebassem (based in The Netherlands), performed with the George Crotty Trio on May 30 at the Small World Centre as part of the Experimental Link Series in Toronto. This album display Montebassem’s talent as a composer of Persian classical music and as a stunning improviser on tar and setar.

Hamid Motebassem’s Persian classical composition served as the basis for a jazz-forward musical exploration at the Experimental Link show with George Crotty on cello, and award-winners Jonathan Chapman on bass and Dhaivat Jani on percussion. The Toronto-based trio led by Canadian cellist, composer and improviser, George Crotty, is known for cross-cultural interplay drawing on modal jazz, Indian raga and Arabic maqam.

Experimental Link Series aims to contemplate the Persian-Canadian experience by reinvigorating, re-exploring and re-imagining Persian traditional music within contemporary and cosmopolitan Toronto by inviting different musicians from the diaspora to collaborate.

“Fingerpaint is a minimalist, solo setar album that introduces a new personal and innovative technique I have developed. While the album consists of 35 tracks, it is, in essence, a single cohesive composition. This modern work draws inspiration from traditional Iranian music, particularly the radif system, and reinterprets it through a contemporary lens.

Each track is named after a specific gushé (mode) of Iranian music. Some pieces directly reflect the melodic characteristics of their corresponding gushé, others are connected rhythmically, and some are conceptually inspired by the original modal structures. The album is a journey through the intersections of tradition and innovation, offering listeners a fresh perspective on the expressive possibilities of the setar.”

"درگاه" نگاه تازه‌ای‌ست به دستگاه چهارگاه‌ که در بر گیرنده‌ی طیف گسترده‌ای از گونه‌های اجراییِ موسیقی دستگاهی می‌باشد. از قطعاتی مانند "نغمه" و "بسته‌نگار" - که رویکردی کاملا کلاسیک و منطبق با ردیف دارند- گرفته تا مُدگردی به "اوج" و "ابوعطا" و سپس اجرای "بزرگ" و "کوچک" ، که هیچ ارتباطی به روند کلاسیک اجرای دستگاه چهارگاه نداشته و در تاریخ موسیقی کلاسیک ایران بی‌سابقه هستند؛ و از دیگر سو، "چهارگاه بندری" که با ریتمِ لنگِ وزینش، شکوه و صلابت چهارگاه را در پایان اثر دوچندان می‌کند

درباره‌ی این اثر، به قلم امین‌پاشا صمدیان می‌خوانیم: «مجموعه‌ی حاضر شامل ضبط‌های خصوصی‌ای است که دکتر داريوش صفوت ـ طی چند سال ـ سر کلاسش اجرا کرده است. شيوه‌ی آموزش جلسات خصوصی معمولاً بدين‌گونه بود که او بر اساس برنامه‌ی تدريس هر جلسه، در کنار پرداختن به جزئيات و ظرايف هر قطعه، بخشی از جلسه را نيز به ضبط قطعات اختصاص می‌داد. اجرای اين قطعات معمولاً از روی نت و با تمپوی آهسته و گاهی همراه با توضيحات شفاهی بود. بخش عمده‌ای از جلسات تدريس، به رديف ابوالحسن‌صبا اختصاص يافته بود (رديف سه‌تار، سنتور، و ويلن). به جز رديف سه‌تار صبا، دکتر صفوت، رديف سنتور و برخی قطعات رديف ويلن را برای اجرا روی سه‌تار تنظيم و تدريس می‌کرد. پس از حدود بيست سال، برخی شاگردان مجموعه‌ی ضبط‌های خود را در اختيار خانواده‌ی او قرار دادند تا به عنوان يادگار ثبت و ضبط شود

اثر پیش رو اجرایی از ردیف آوازی استاد عبدالله دوامی بر مبنای آوانگاری استاد فرامرز پایور است که سعی شده وفاداری به مکتب و شیوه‌ی دوامی مبنای اجرا باشد. این اثر در قیاس با اجرایی که از خود استاد در دست است از حیث تعداد گوشه‌ها، مفصل‌تر‌بودن برخی جملات و تحریرها و نیز استفاده از اشعار متفاوت حاوی مطالب تکمیلی است. برای آن‌که کار، علاوه بر جنبه‌ی آموزشی، جنبه‌ی شنیداری‌ـ‌هنری نیز داشته باشد، این اثر به صورت ساز و آواز اجرا شده است

بخش نخست: همنوازی تار و تمبک
این مجموعه شامل پنج قسمت است که مدگردی‌های آن براساس امکانات بالقوه‌ی دستگاه نواست. در دستگاه نوا چند نقطه‌ی تأکید (شاهد) وجود دارد که هرکدام از این نقاط توسط گوشه‌های معینی از این دستگاه معرفی می شوند. علاوه بر مدهای موجود در دستگاه نوا، مدهای دیگری مانند بیات ترک و کردبیات نیز در سیر گردش مدها گنجانده شده و برای تثبیت بیشتر فضاها تار به گونه‌ای کوک شده که واخوان‌ها نقش مؤثری در این زمینه داشته باشند و بتوان چند نت شاهد را به صورت همزمان داشت. از حیث آهنگسازی، قطعات با الهام از پایه‌های ملودیک و ریتمیک موجود در تارنوازی کلاسیک ایرانی ساخته شده است.
بخش دوم: تکنوازی سه‌تار
این مجموعه شامل سه قسمتِ مستقل است که، در عین حال، می‌توان میان آن‌ها شاهد نوعی پیوستگی بود. بیراه نیست اگر بگوییم این قطعات مروری است بر سه‏تارنوازیِ متأخر، اما نوازنده کوشیده است، دست آخر، نگاه خود را از این طریق نمایان سازد
