This is a fantastic track, the chord sequence is quite lovely and warm.  Great choice of pic too - Calder's mobiles are fantastic (when they are allowed to move! Tate Modern did an exhibition this year that was really disappointing, the mobiles were static because they are now too delicate to move :-(   )

The warm bass feels like a thick coat pulled around during a snowfall (the lighter high notes)

Huh, that's funny you mentioned children and pianos. Just took my own daughter out recently for some dinner and ended up at a jazz piano lounge. She was transfixed, and yes, wasn't long into the night that her amazement faded into some good sleep. I too am a firm believer in the power of the piano, though I can't play it to save my life. I'll leave that to you :) great work!

Disquiet Junto Project 0250: Soothing Sounds for Junto

Dead Light was created after Anna Rose Carter and Ed Hamilton moved from London to a quiet, remote space in the countryside. The migration out of the sprawling metropolis to their new rural refuge was a transition that significantly impacted them both, and one that continues to turn and shift under the ambivalence of change, loss, and new beginnings.

Dead Light - Blooms

This week's Junto was to create some soothing sounds for a newborn baby.  I started out at the piano, and soon came across this little motif that I liked. It had a sort of lullaby feel to it, but I didn't want it to be too rigid in timing. So I flooded it with reverb and lots of slow echoes, and tried to play without getting entrenched in any particular 'bar' structure. I found that by adding a few sequences from the modular synth it would give me something more firmly in time to shift across.   I also added one of my pad sounds from the JP-8080 for a little variety.

"Compose a piece of music intended for a newborn child, something peaceful as they first experience the world outside the womb."

I remember when our first daughter was born, she would sleep better on car rides when we played music with a touch of prominent bass.  Nothing too loud, of course.  

This piece tries to replicate that "perfect" soothing baby sound that our daughter liked while in the car.  In addition to two kinds of basses, there's a variety of field recordings mixed in the background, along with a section of the track "Tactile Music" by Mark Rushton and Jon Harnish, from our 2008 album Ornate Culmination.

Disquiet Junto Project 0250: Soothing Sounds for Junto
Make some peaceful music for an infant child.

This project finds me re-editing and mixing tracks I composed and recorded last year for a film that needed some “clear”, “transparent” and “crystalline” music according to director.
So I went for a sample instrument called Glass Works from Soniccouture that I ended up using quite a lot, samples from “translucent” glass instruments such as Chamber Bowls, Cristal Baschet and Glass Harmonica.

I kept the same template yesterday night and build this Welcome! sound to Karin and Bruce’s sweetheart, wishing them all a lot of happiness.

Basic tracks are:
-Cristal Baschet (arpeggio)
-Bowls (w/mallets) 
-Glass Harmonica
-Bowed bowls pad

So the basic track is full midi.

Then I added my beloved Accordina (start @ 0:34) and (bassist me) a pizzicato upright bass section (6 overdubs of the same basic bass part to make it sound like a bass orchestra).
I thought this was a bad idea, (removing the aerial mood and giving some rhythmic root) but today it seems good.
Still, at 3AM I added some “Vangelis” noises and cutoff falls ‘cause something in the sound reminds me the Love Theme from Blade Runner, so I tried to imitate those unique “ffffsshhhh” sound Vangelis masters.
I also thought this was a bad idea and now, the morning after I can confirm. It’s actually number 37 in my list “50 worst ideas of 2016”
But can’s get to the studio to remove it now, so here it goes, lets support some bad ideas from time to time, shall we?

A magic moment is at 01:05 when the glass harmonica takes the lead playing the melody the Accordina just played (and accordina starts improvising) , both timbre sound so alike that it’s amazing, such disparate instruments.

Welcome Little One - disquiet0250

This is a single take of a piano improvisation. Something I've been doodling with for this project over the weekend.

I grew up with a piano in the house, and when I left home, I've never had a full-sized instrument in the house - I had a full-size midi keyboard for a bit, and then I didn't again. Last month, around my 34th birthday, I bought a 73-note stage piano. I've been playing it ever since.

I think I still, deep down, amidst the audio and electronics, identify as a piano player. It's been nice remembering feelings in my fingers and body: the piano is such a bodily instrument.

Anyway: I do not have children. But if I did, I'd welcome them into the world with a piano. The piano doesn't live in the studio or study; it's in the living room. It's a social instrument; music is love. And if I had children, I'd play to them; play for them. There's so much richness in all those strings (virtual or not); so much to say with 88 keys.

I treat Junto not as a way to show _finished_ pieces, but as a way to _start_ pieces. And thus: there are mistakes, there's a clipping error. But there's also something in here, I think. And so: a single take, just audio, and then light mastering and effects.

Goddamn it, babies, you've got to be kind.

it's another one of those Juntos where the source material is so beautiful that my interference with it has a gross ineptness to it; not that that actually stops me or anything but you know, caveats, right?

i took a small, delightful section - 18m30.991s - 19m23.719s - and mangled it - compressed it to super low resolution, put it though granular delay - then kept adding reverb before reversing before adding reverb; smearing, effectively, i guess. I had hoped to not totally drown the compression artefact-y-ness of the reuslting sounds but probably did tbh 'cause reverb's a helluva drug. My stereo field is ebullient, though maybe understated.

EARTH MONEY [disquiet0284]

For this Disquiet Junto, I wanted to treat Kallmyer's source sample the way he creates objects from source earth. I started with a bed of sound created by Grainfields, then found a core sample to loop and manipulate for the main line. During editing, the grain sections were pushed to the back of the mix and I spent more time on the core sample, making sure it had plenty of room to be heard. I used a handful of Soundhack plugins and Bitwig to complete the final mix and arrangement.

A single live take, watching an imaginary lantern drift away.

Notes, as for all Junto projects; played on a keyboard sending CV/Gate to synthesizer; manipulating controls and modulation sources as the lanterns drift away. Main voice is an MI Rings treated as if it were a normal oscillator - fed into a low-pass filter and a VCA, VCA shaped by an envelope. An LFO jitters the Position of the Rings; a fast-running Turing Machine fed into a slew jitters the frequency of the filter.
