I’d like to welcome you to the first edition of the Basing House Mix Series. To get things started we welcome good friend of the venue Zaki from Muak Music. 

Muak began life in 2003 as one of the first deep house events in East London. Over the following years it became a mecca for deep House lovers with artists including Kerri Chandler, DJ Sneak, Osunlade, The Martinez Brothers, Kaskade, Dennis Ferrer and Kollectiv Turmstrasse having all played at Muak events and that’s just scratching the surface. 

Out of the events naturally came a record label, which is now 97 releases old, including the release of Zaki’s solo artist album in late 2019. Away from Muak, as an artist Zaki has also taken the time release on the highly respected outputs Innervisions and Suara.

Zaki has provided us with two mixes. The A:Side is what you would expect to hear of him in clubland and the B:Side a compilation of his own releases.

As part of The 1975’s takeover of The Face, we’ve released a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes.

Bobby Gillespie is the frontman of Primal Scream and the former drummer with The Jesus and Mary Chain. 

After growing tired of being a straight-up indie band – and, frankly, with nothing left to lose – in 1989 the Scotsman enlisted the help of DJ/producer Andrew Weatherall. 

The result was the groundbreaking blend of psychedelia, dub, funk and acid house that is the Scream’s classic 1991 album Screamadelica.

In the years since, Gillespie’s restless rock’n’roll spirit has continued to explore multiple genres – and, like Healy after him, he’s pushed the boundaries of how a bunch of guys in a band can sound.

In this podcast, Gillespie and Healy debate the current state of rock music, authenticity in music and art, and the legacy and legend of the mighty Weatherall.

Conor Oberst and Matty Healy in conversation

Born in the UK and based in Beirut, William Mahfoud aka Rise 1969 has been a staple of his local rave communities, drawing influences from the punk, techno, drum and bass, and experimental scenes, and with almost a decade of professional experience in sound, two LPs, numerous club residencies and bi-continental performances and appearances at the likes of Electrowerkz and The Ministry of Sound in London. 2019 culminated in Mahfoud traveling to Berlin for a four week residency at Blackhead studios, working under the mentor ship of Moodmusic label and studio head Sasse, where Black Eye was born. Fascinated by hippie culture, Rise was immediately drawn to the Berlin underground and found a home in its rich and progressive music communities, specifically the thriving clubbing and techno scenes that have made Berlin the hub for electronic musicians, DJs and free spirits alike, in the last decade. A direct result of this immersive experience, the 6 track LP is an expertly engineered Techno record, featuring fantastic sound design work, dark & ominous ambiances with deeply penetrating sub energy that would make the sturdiest speaker cabinets tremble at their might. From the titular track and fittingly named Black Eye to the closing Neural Handshake, the release carries impressive textural sound work relying on (a) few methodically woven sounds and textures, emulating a Berghain-esque Techno experience with a unique and uncompromising punk attitude - an ask no questions, take no prisoners melange of Peak-time and hard-hitting Techno with a dash of melodic to warm frail hearts, Rise’s offering is a requiem that engulfs the listener in a world of auditory pleasure delivering massive energy that will shake your core, and probably leave you with an ever so welcome black eye.

Do-it-all-herself musician and artist Nina Ryser has been home-recording since she was eight years old on her Fisher-Price toy tape machine. One of these childhood recordings makes an appearance on Ryser’s new solo album, Paths of Color, which is characteristic of Ryser’s work: dreamy, wonky, synth-based art-pop that’s bubbly, edgy, sweet, and dark all at once; with elements of post-punk, art rock, and free jazz. Recorded at the beginning of the stay-at-home order, and inspired by loss and love and our new reality, Paths is a product of Ryser’s refined home-recording set-up. Intentionally more polished and clearer-sounding than she’s ever been, Paths of Color (mastered by Angel Marcloid aka Fire-Toolz) maintains the homemade vibe and freedom of childhood expression that is so crucial to Ryser’s sound. Though a product of grief, Ryser’s light and love shines through the record’s sonic playfulness, and is ultimately a celebration of life and art.
