Sirena is a DJ, promoter, radio show host and dance-floor enthusiast based out of Vancouver, Canada.

Hailing from rural Alberta, Canada, she was introduced to music at an early age with Classical piano instruction. During this time, she developed a fondness for daydreaming; easy for a child to do amongst the backdrop of vast open fields, and seemingly endless skies in the prairies. Finding the nature of Classical training too strict, she joined the percussion section of her school band for the remainder of her studies. 

Sirena's first taste of underground music culture came from the raw energy generated by the DIY punk scene in Edmonton, where she was exposed to acts involving analog electronics with live instruments, further developing her passion for hidden venues and discovering unique, evolving sounds. After relocating to Vancouver to pursue film, Sirena naturally found the like-minded who were participating in the local underground rave scene. After sharing consciousness-expanding experiences on the dance-floor, and now close friends exposing her to their knowledge of DJing, Sirena was compelled to learn to mix herself. 

Her alias Sirena was officially born in 2014, and since then has played a countless number of venues in her city, working closely alongside other artists working hard to promote the beauty of Underground music culture. These years of experience have led her to sharing the stage with artists such as Traumer, Mihai Popoviciu, Bill Patrick, Jay Tripwire, Mayan Nidam, Benny, Claire, and a wide array of talented DJs and producers from different parts of the world that have made their home in Vancouver.

After these years of sonic exploration, her sound can be described mostly as Minimal, yet she can be found playfully mixing within the realms of Deep House, Tech, Microhouse, Progressive, and Psychedelic Techno. With these sounds, her aim is to create a time and space wherein everyone can dive freely into the depths of spirit, dancing as she would if on the other side of the booth.

RFM Podcast 71 - Sirena

So with the 5AM Trio, we've been talking a lot about how to make more trap-style tunes to play in our sets. One day I was at the bouldering gym and a marimba melody popped into my head along with a break-beat style drum groove and thought "ooh that's hot", so I ran home and sketched-up the initial idea for "Heat". After jamming on it a bit with the Trio, as it often does, it turned from a simple, singular idea into a dynamic journey through trap, house, and breaks that will be really fun to explore in future live sets.

5AM Trio - Heat

This is the first journey in a new series under the flowstate moniker. It features my street performance rig from the summer, but with a focus on flow instead of interactivity. I'm really happy with this first edition.

I expect most future entries to live on YouTube with a video of how I produce the music live, but perhaps I'll keep them going on soundcloud too?

If you're unfamiliar with my music: my performances are 100% improvised. This setup includes a drum machine, a chaotic synth, an electric piano, a looper, a variety of guitar pedals (for my voice), and a mixer/compressor/limiter.

I’m finally getting around to posting this home recording of my set from last summer’s Starbelly Jam in Crawford Bay, BC. It was cut short by a force majeure—a summer electrical storm that rolled in just minutes after I started. Thankfully, this minor weather glitch had zero impact on the overall execution of a magically curated weekend featuring an epic performance by Chali 2na, followed by Mark Farina rocking the stage the following night.

This inclusive, intimate, all-ages festival has a special vibe and deep roots in the East Shore Kootenay scene. I’m grateful it has been revived after a few years on pause and hope it continues to thrive for the community.

In recent years, I’ve had the pleasure of contributing in small ways—helping with artist bookings and witnessing the evolution of lineup curation. Hosting artist friends and experiencing something so uniquely family-oriented has been incredibly rewarding. It’s all about love, appreciation, and paying it forward for the next generation. Thank you to Amanda Ruppe Holland for inviting me to play to contribute:) I am happy to finally post this as promised;)
