My Favs II

I tried to make an orchestral song using ONLY Triple Cheese by U-He, which is a freeware synthesizer that doesn't not use samples. Usually for this type of song you'd use an orchestral library comprised of actual samples of people playing real instruments (which would have made this sound way better and way more real), but that wasn't the challenge here. I wanted to synthesize all the sounds and make it as real as possible. I don't think the results sound real, but it sounds better than I expected!

Created entirely using the JP6K synthesizer for the January 2024 KVR One Synth Challenge number 179, this track marks a tribute to the mighty supersaw oscillator that debuted within the Roland JP8000 synth in 1996.

The JP6K synth (by Adam Szabo) is based on just the supersaw oscillator from the JP8000/8080. This oscillator is free-running, mono, can morph between saw and supersaw waveforms, and includes a noise oscillator. There's a filter (HP/LP/BP, 12 or 24dB/oct), and on-board effects are limited to a delay, bass knob, and treble knob.

Its a single Grid patch triggering 2* 24 Oscillators tuned in the overtone row. One set plays the first 24 overtones, the other set plays the first 24 prime number overtones. Each oscillator in a set has a different speed. I modulate the waveforms and the attack and decay times of the oscillators, which creates the changing sounds...

I really like the way this sounds. Sorry it's 8 minutes while moving slow. It does slowly develop and gets a bit more interesting in the second half. It is how it's meant to be. 

It may not add anything at all to the listening experience for you but FWIW I picture in my head a futuristic city of immortals who in order to be rejuvenated finally have to start mixing their DNA with other creatures. Is it a good thing or bad? It's a new thing. Turns out it's not terrible. Though there was a lot of trepidation and some factions preferred death.

This is mostly an experimental project to test my new audio interface. I wanted to make a really loud mix and master for a long time and it seems to be the right opportunity. The synth itself has a good sound with interesting possibilities, but it's very off putting in technical terms (very high CPU load, very long project loading time, frequent crashes etc.).

This instrument is really capable of abrasive overdriven tones, so I decided to make a darksynth track with a bit of acid techno influence.
