In the first episode of You Must Remember This, a new podcast devoted to the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood's first century, Karina Longworth and guest Farran Nehme (author of the Self-Styled Siren blog) work back from Kim Novak's appearance at the 2014 Academy Awards to trace the ways in which Novak has always been an outlier amongst Hollywood beauties. I wanted to cover Unchained Melody sort of as a challenge to myself to see if I could tackle it. I very much couldn't to start with, more than a year ago, but I got it to a place that I'm happy with. I love the Righteous Brothers version so much and it's a small part of my childhood, much as it is in other peoples lives, for lots of different reasons. The song is a memory unto itself, with people and places and moments in time for everyone. That's why I wanted my recording to feel nostalgic, to take you to another time or place. I really just wanted it to sound old and feel old. 

It'll be this sound that I'll use, with some tweaks, on a maybe 6-track EP I'm working on/still writing in places. Either way it'll be Jackson Browne/War on Drugs/Ryan Adams/David Ramirez/Willie Nelson/maybe even The Band inspired stuff. Americana, for sure.

My good pal Jack Bevan (Roped In) did all those gorgeous background vocals and played bass. Joss Edwards played the fantastic, Elton Johnny piano parts and Joe Barton (King Solomon) knew just what to do with the Organ. Big thank you to boys, it wouldn't be what it is without you. Thank you very much.

Wish Away

Latin was my first love, and music is my second. I've utterly fallen for those of the soulful, creative, inspiring and inciting kind. The one composed with heart and soul, the one performed with passion and aplomb. Searching for a way to express my love for and enthusiasm about music, I've found twitter is a decent and effective place to do so, yet given my wordy nature 140 characters one day simply didn't suffice to promote the music I enjoy anymore. This is how my music blog - carpe carmina - came into being (a heartfelt thank-you goes out to my favourite UK band High/Low for the encouragement to start writing about music, to my all time favourite band for so many years by now, Midnight Hour, for making me realize my affection for music and my wish to help those artists in whose talent I believe in, and to all those people who read my blog, who recommend and submit music for it).
