Returning to Items & Things with his first solo EP for the label since October 2011ʼs “VoodooVoodoo”, label head Troy Pierce presents “Softcore”, a four track EP featuring two original productions alongside remixes of title track “Softcore” from Bristol-based producer Dubspeeka and French DJ/producer Chloé.

A pioneer of the darker side of electronic experimentation, Troy’s A-side “Softcore” is anything but: a haunting, chugging peak-time production with a music DNA consisting of twisted strands of EBM, techno, and industrial, with a hint of dub thrown in for good measure. B-side “The Dangers With Strangers” is an equally powerful effort; its depraved machine funk and distorted tales of strangers provide a visceral exploration into the depths of hedonism.

Having debuted with a release on Oliver Huntemannʼs Ideal Audio label, elusive Bristol producer Dubspeeka (perhaps more famously known as one part of British group Kosheen) delivers a stripped down yet driven interpretation of Troy’s original, reinforcing the reasons why his productions have been exciting a number of the techno elite over the past year. Chloé - a recent addition to the Items & Things Booking Agency - needs little introduction. Typically poised between genres and aesthetics, the Kill The DJ founder and ex-Pulp resident rounds off proceedings with a remix that is as atmospheric as it is club-suitable, a reflection of her unique eclecticism that couldn’t be more at home than with Items & Things.

Troy Pierce and Gibby Miller are blurring the lines between their respective influences on this week's RA podcast.

You might not think that a hardcore punk vocalist and minimal techno producer would be the likeliest of studio bedfellows, but Troy Pierce and Gibby Miller have forged quite the partnership with their Louderbach project. Marrying Minus man Pierce's tenebrous take on techno with Miller's gothic vocals, the duo have created an electronic pop synergy that isn't afraid to get deep and dark both musically and lyrically. Miller's began his musical career in the late '90s as vocalist in Boston-based punk band The Trouble, but the turn of the century saw him become inaugurated into the techno scene after meeting up with Troy Pierce in New York. The two struck up a friendship and have been collaborating ever since, birthing the first fruits of their collective labour on a split release for Mo's Ferry Productions. 

After more collaborations with Marc Houle, Guido Schneider and Sammy Dee, Miller was formally welcomed into the Louderbach fold, and the pair set to work on what would become their debut album. Entitled Enemy Love, the record seemed to be a continuation of Pierce's previous nocturnal minimal techno outings on Underl_ne and Minus, but this year's Autumn LP is a very different beast. Miller's love of EBM, new wave and minimal synth music are clearer than ever, whilst Pierce's has found new directions to channel his love of menacing electronic sounds. This week's RA podcast sees Pierce and Miller select the pieces of music that have heavily influenced each of them, before merging them into a single genre-defying whole that represents the ingredients that make the Louderbach sound. We caught up with both members by e-mail to ask about the mix, the decision to release on Minus, and their recent video competition.


What have you been working on recently?

Troy Pierce: I have been in London a lot over the past few weeks working with my girlfriend on the sound design for an installation she is doing for her degree show. (She graduates from Central St. Martins in June.) I am also trying to finish a number of remixes at the moment: a Function remix for Sandwell District, one for my New York friend Mike Bryant's Intrinsic Design label, one for the Swayzak guys and a Louderbach cover of a Passarella Death Squad track. All of them are in various states of completion.

Gibby Miller: Working on my label, Dais Records. It's mostly experimental sounds; ambient, folk, archival, avant-garde etc... I'm also working on some new Louderbach remixes which are coming this summer.

How and where was the mix recorded?

GM: I submitted about 100 tracks to Troy for this project, and we communicated back and forth a bit about order and flow, but he did all the hard work (creating it!) and it was done in Berlin.

Can you tell us a little bit about the mix?

TP: I was in Los Angeles in January visiting Gibby, and we did a DJ gig together at this goth party there. Gibby was playing more punk/new wave/goth stuff and I played sort of dark slower techno and it worked really well together. So from that, I sort of proposed the idea that he send me one hundred tracks, his root influences—whatever you want to call them—and I would get one hundred together and try to create this snapshot of Louderbach and where we come from musically. It was really fun to do, but a lot of tedious work warping all of the tracks to make sure they would go together and could be mixed in Ableton. Musically it's all over the place with experimental tracks from William Basinski, then spaced out '70s weirdness from Silver Apples into dark techno from Jake Fairley. But there is a common thread: this murky melancholy that is running through all 35 of the tracks that brought us together and helped us to create Louderbach.

What was the weirdest submission you received for the "Shine" video contest?

TP: There were definitely a few that left us scratching our heads, but the ones I found the strangest were ones that weren't finished. Like no audio and two minutes long, as if we were supposed to fill in the blanks or something.

GM: We got some very unique submissions... I'm proud to say that all of them were amazing and all of them were weird! We wouldn't have it any other way! 

Why did you decide to release the new record on Minus, instead of Underline?

GM: We stopped working with Underline soon after Enemy Love was released, best described as personal difference...

TP: At that point I thought the project was over, I never imagined that Rich would be into releasing a record like this. I am really thankful for his openness.

What are you up to next?

GM: Working hard on the label, Louderbach, music, writing, etc...

TP: Well, I obviously need to get my ass in gear on those remixes! Apart from that, I want to learn how to play an instrument or two. My girlfriend got me a cello for Christmas and I picked up a bass guitar in Los Angeles, so those are on the top of my to-do list. I have been making some really, really slow tracks lately, 80 BPM max. I quite like them actually, so who knows what will happen with them. Do some more projects with my girlfriend, she's amazing... Stay busy and have fun.

Since then, he’s developed into a pillar of the modern techno community thanks to world tours, live shows, albums and EPs under a number of aliases and as part of more than one studio collective. 

The Troy Pierce sound is one which has constantly veered from dense, layered and abstract to stripped down, acid infused and pulsing. His sonic palette is one that draws on a wide array of influences and reaches far outside the confines of the studio and into an otherworld entirely. Fusing techno with minimalism, darkness with light and heaviness with rhythm, this American has never been afraid to experiment in the outer regions of his vast musical universe. 

“I like making and playing weird music for weird people - those WTF tracks that stick in your head as a sound from another dimension” says the man whose close association to techno bastion Minus has earned him a deserved and revered reputation during the years since first emerging. Looking ahead though, it will be for his own label, Items & Things (co-run with friends Magda and Marc Houle) that he is most known. 

Whilst the rejuvenated label will aim to break new talent and continue its run of underground and intimate Down & Out parties, Troy will also work on his own music: in collaborative effort with his new label mates, on a solo EP on I&T, but also some fresh material from his much-lauded Louderbach alias.

Despite an already impressive list of accolades to his name, Troy Pierce isn’t one to sit still. At last the 1/3rds of Run Stop Restore have finally gotten it together and founded a new label.... simply put, Items &amp; Things.

The first release "SPACESHIPS &amp; PINGS" contains four summer hits all wrapped up nicely in one convenient E.P. With tracks from Magda, Marc Houle, Troy Pierce and their good friend Konrad Black Items &amp; Things 01 is poised to leave a big impression.

Konrad starts things off with "Coma Couch Surfing" a spacey disco number full of dreamy melodies and a sick bassline that will keep sunny terraces screaming for more. Magda's "Black Leather Wonder" is a stuttered electro-ish number full of spooky atmosphere and an ominous acid line that skips through the shadows of this sexy track in a way only Magda could come up with.

On the flip, "Kicker" from Marc Houle is a steady bleeping good time in true Houle fashion, building and building until the bass drops and presents a crazy melody sends the track over the edge, in a very good way. And finally, "The Day After Yesterday" a trippy vocal excursion into the mind of an obsessed stalker courtesy of Troy Pierce and minimal crooner Gibby Miller. Hinting at old-school Chicago house but with a very new school twist. Gibby says it best, "I think that i'm in deep....."

Troy Pierce continues his mission up river into the heart of darkness, with arguably his most accomplished collection of tracks to date. Made up of music composed almost exclusively on the road, the ‘Gone Astray EP’ is driven by choices and ideas that would not normally have surfaced in a typical studio environment. It’s an innovative, ambitious project, not least because it tackles so many abstract themes in one sitting, often taking more than one mix to fully explore the hidden pathways that disappear off into this dense catacomb of sound. 

‘Even If It’s Alone (Black Acid)’ is a good case in point. The original version is abstract, freeform techno full of disorientating bleeps, metallic snare rolls and messed up vocal overdubs that offer the listener little in the way of a safety net. The Louderbach remix however is an altogether differ ent trip. Sparser and pinned down by a mechanical hihat/snare pattern, it utilizes spaced out delays and reverbs to create an equally intense atmosphere. Further highlights include the classic arpeggiated hookline at the heart of ‘Lost On The Way To DC10’ (prepared moments before a gig at the self same club) and the urgent tribal stomps of ‘Klitkut’ - another track with Ibiza after hour origins. 

Dramatic changes of pressure abound throughout the whole project, with Pierce making full use of the audio spectrum as he painstakingly deconstructs and reconstructs frequencies. Each sound is teased and twisted in all manner of directions, (check out the morphing acid line on ‘Golden’) with particular attention paid to the drum machine patterns that are refreshingly free from the linear constraints of standard techno. As a result the sound seems to move forward like a wall, constantly changing room size and shape, which is why you&rs quo;ll be forgiven for sometimes finding a door where the window should be.
Going astray can be a good thing, especially when you end up finding a better way.

’R U OK REMIXES’ M56 2x12”

Just when you thought it was safe to venture back on to the dancefloor, that strange guy with the sunken eyes and scary voice is up to his old tricks again!
Cleverly combining black humour with reduced micro-grooves, the title track from Ambivalent’s R U OK EP has become one of the most memorable tunes of the year to date, with the bonus accapella version coming in particularly handy during the messier parts of an evening. It’s only right then, that it reappears remixed and revamped for a fresh onslaught over the summer season.

Marco Carola offers up two versions of stripped down metronomic tech-funk. The 2beats remix is full of metallic, sliding efx and a pulsing subsonic bassline that keeps the track rolling forward while the 4beat remix takes everything up a level with a stronger kick, busy percussion parts and an altogether more urgent, peak time vibe.

Contrastingly, the Like It Or Not mix from Troy Pierce is a typically murky ride, with a scuttling 6/8 acid bassline that’s ripe for the after-afterhour. Dark as f**k, it plays with the cut-up vocal elements drenching them in a heavy reverb during this descent into the inferno. The Kasper is Okay mix keeps the tension at a maximum as the hypnotic percussive groove falls victim to the needle sharp hookline that slowly envelops the proceedings before drilling straight into your cerebral cortex.

The trademark JPLS elastic bass is in full effect on the 12mg Remix. The vocals are rinsed out beyond recognition and a tight hihat/snare pattern keeps the warped, original synth line in check as it drifts across the sparse, alien landscape. The Paco Osuna’s WMC Remix is the kind of hi octane affair we’ve come to expect - full of twisted bleeps and machine gun snare rolls, everything works towards the almighty breakdown that sends shock waves across the dancefloor.

...and if that’s not enough, check out the deep, bass heavy version from Tim Xavier and Camea. With cool, subliminal fx and jarring claps that resonate into the darkness as the kick drum motors onward, it’s raw techno at it’s best.

TROY PIERCE (aka Louderbach, Slacknoise and one third of Run Stop Restore with Magda and Marc Houle) unleashes one of the year’s most anticipated tracks with ’25 BITCHES’. The original track goes back a while, coming into creation as a joke composed while stuck waiting in an airport. Not like humor is never ever a part of Troy’s music or persona, ’25 Bitches’ has been knocking down doors in his and fellow DJ’s sets like Magda and Richie Hawtin since last fall. Pierce’s bass-heavy mix starts off full of dark ghosts, working into a dub bassline and surgical mix of effects and vocals.

Remixers for Volume I stepped up to the challenge with steam and force. Detroit’s BERG NIXON moves two ships in the night, colliding his vibes in the razor-sharp edit on side A that swells and ping’s while shifting to his more melodic and animated B side version with Berg’s ‘ZigZag remix’. MATT JOHN hits the chip from Berlin with his ’25 Pitches’ remix. Matt slices thru the bassline by creating a new intimate close-up version with a monotone pulse and subtle sneak-attack. Both remixers deliver the energy for DJ’s and dancefloors while also working in subtleties for deeper listening.

TROY PIERCE (aka Louderbach, Slacknoise and one third of Run Stop Restore with Magda and Marc Houle) unleashes one of the year’s most anticipated tracks with ’25 BITCHES’. The original track goes back a while, coming into creation as a joke composed while stuck waiting in an airport. Not like humor is never ever a part of Troy’s music or persona, ’25 Bitches’ has been knocking down doors in his and fellow DJ’s sets like Magda and Richie Hawtin since last fall. Pierce’s bass-heavy mix starts off full of dark ghosts, working into a dub bassline and surgical mix of effects and vocals.

GAISER packs dynamite into his reworking with ‘Too Many Bitches Makeover’. Explosive bass and a sonic edginess are Gaiser’s weapons, working with percussion and effects into a fever-pitched remix that has been destroying dancefloors in Gaiser’s live sets and DJ sets by Pierce & Hawtin worldwide for months. MARC HOULE reworks ‘Bitches’ like he’s dragging it through an arcade floor from the 1980’s. His bounce and snap treatment turns the original on its side, carving in a pop-ish attitude and a new aggressive side to Houle’s electro wisdom. Under the controls, HEARTTHROB detunes and operates the subject into a haunted bendy swing, adding his soon-to-be-signature bassline. It’s the slow punch and melody that Heartthrob hooks into with his grinding yet flowing treatment.

‘I Need a Guide’ is a tense analogue workout full of atmosphere. There are tiny little details if you listen close enough, but also bold beats and basslines which mark out hybrid house and techno rhythms. The track twists and turns in every direction, with chattery claps, skewed synths and rich bells: dark but alluring stuff. 

‘Next Exit Lost Lake’ meanwhile is a little more eerie and gaunt to start with. Raw percussive sounds are paired with moody synths initially, but then a bouncing beat asserts itself and the atmosphere grows ever more frantic and haunting. 

Continuing the highly evocative approach to sound design, ‘Slap in The Space’ is like another unhinged sci-fi disco off in the deepest darkest pockets of the cosmos. Taught bass notes, ticking, panning FX and crisp hi-hats all come together to make for a mutant funk that’s highly infectious. 

For his part, San Francisco newcomer Dead Seal makes ‘Next Exit Lost Lake’ into a sexy panty dropping remix which features all his own alluring vocals - it’s still grimy and ghoulish, but the sultry bassline really draws you in, as do the snake charmer style synths which weave about in the background. 

Coming soon on digital only - charismatic micro-detailed remix of ‘I Need A Guide’ from Les Freres Royales as well as Danny Benedettini’s stripped-down, raw-funk interpretation of ‘Slap in the Space.’

Weeks of isolation have provided an abundance of time to search for and listen to music, so I put together two mixes of tracks I found interesting along the way.
