Single "Sabantuy ham Kyz Kuu" (in Tatar language: "Сабантуй hәм Кыз Куу") is the first in a long time and the third studio record by Baradj, which took 5 years to record. The band's members point out that the main tenor of "Sabantuy ham Kyz Kuu" is the opposition of the two sides: as day and night, black and white. This is why the single is divided in two parts: "Sabantuy" and "Kyz Kuu". The concepts of these two parts are described below.

The history of Sabantuy holiday is veiled in mystery. For example, according to one version, "Sabantuy" is translated as "plough’s feast". This holiday was a rite to coax the spirits of fertility and was celebrated upon completion of spring field works. A heavy plough for clayed soil was preserved under the name "saban", since this plough was widely used by the Bulgar tribe having the same name.

According to another version, "Sabantuy" was the day of wedding in the Bulgar tribe Saban. On this day, there were no boundaries between young men and ladies, and they could take part in a unique rite called "Kyz Kuu".

"Kyz Kuu" is a horse game. Volga Bulgars have forgotten "Kyz Kuu" tradition, however, it has survived to this day among the people living in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Central Asia.


"Nowadays, while chasing progress, people move away from traditions, customs and culture of their ancestors, they tend to forget their roots", says Djonathan, the frontman of Baradj. "We only want to preserve the history of Volga Bulgaria people in a new form – through music".

Single "Sabantuy ham Kyz Kuu" differs noticeably from Baradj’s previous studio records. This time, the band combines atmospheric sound with progressive metal and ethnic motives of Volga Bulgars. Band members call this genre "post folk metal".
