You took the words right out of my mouth.  And then transformed them into beautiful, melodic poetry that conveys the message much more powerfully & incisively than I could have said it.  Enjoyed, and appreciated.

Interesting times.

Sometimes best to keep your head down and say nothing.  Personally, I don’t think that silence will get us very far;  occasionally a song can help the discussion.

My two ha’porth?  I demand equality of rights and opportunities for all – along with the obligations those privileges bring.  But we are not all “equal”.  For which we can thank God – those of us that have one;  we are stronger for diversity – best person for the job every time from a level playing field.  

That can’t happen in a world of mob rule where people are peer-pressured into silence for fear of causing offence or where they are compelled to adopt or comply with actions, words or gestures for fear, full stop.  As it has become de rigueur to identify ever more ways of finding offence today, in that which no-one considered or intended offence yesterday, it’s not a long way down that road before you get to places that history has graphically shown us so many times; human-built hells of forced proscription and compliance, homogenisation and segregation, exclusion and persecution.  

The human animal is sometimes distinguished from our fellow creatures by its sense of conscience, discriminating good and evil by analysis of social effect, promises and commitments and compacts between individual and society for the common good, reinforced by the experience of the past. We forget history at our peril, but the future won’t learn much from the past if it has been eradicated by the present.  

Herewith, my little song.

Hell in a Handcart

One more shelf of vocabulary
Cast into history’s well.
Obscenity’s imbalance weights
Hung on freedom’s muffled bell.
And so we have no words to say, 
Lest offence construed each verbal way.
May I be allowed to pray?
While we shuffle into hell.

Vast wreaths of reasons to beat my breast
Laid next to where I fell.
I’ll index them with all the rest 
Though there’s little space left, truth to tell.
But where now, my love, that thing called “truth”?
Was is pillaged by tomorrow’s youth?
And used in censure, my guilt to prove?
As I stagger into hell.

And what of tomorrow, my desolate friend
Screaming others sorrows with your fashionista spell?
Plastic rage, whose pain to forfend?
Shall we sound George’s ’84 knell?
Were the killing fields the rancid prequel
That taught no two of us are truly equal?
Ah, then Dante’s primary shall surely sequel
Our handcarting to hell.
