Henning Schmiedt - Piano Miniatures
When playing the pieces from Piano Miniatures, I felt like I was back to my childhood.
I was back to the games of that time, how I made trees, horses, small locomotives, mini castles, and entire miniature cities from building blocks. It was so exciting to do it all myself. To be completely immersed in the game and to look at and design everything from above simultaneously.
That is still my ideal when playing the piano, and it is in this spirit I created my piano miniatures.
The fifteen titles are works in small format, music as if viewed under a microscope: small film scores, mini sonatas, songs, tiny symphonies.

Union Cafe and Concert Program were released in 1994 and 1995 by Simon Jeffes, on his label Zopf Records. Simon himself saw them as the last part of the 'Octave' of Penguin Cafe Orchestra recordings.

As part of the ongoing curation of the Penguin cafe story, they were gently re-mastered by Simon's son Arthur Jeffes, and rereleased in 2011 along with 'Piano Music' a posthumous album of Simon's piano pieces.

ensemble 0 is a band who plays the compositions by its members and music by other living composers. The members can change according to each project. The founding members live in France (Joël Merah), Spain (Stéphane Garin) and Belgium (Sylvain Chauveau), with a rotating set of musicians from Western Europe. In 2016 a section of ensemble 0 has been created in Brussels featuring Florent Garnier, Jean-François Brohée, and Chauveau. This trio has spent one and a half year composing new acoustic pieces, playing them live, recording and mixing them. This is the music for this album on flau: 8 tracks with percussion, harmonium, ebows and guitar, with the addition of Thomas Jean Henri (aka Cabane) and Antoine Pasqualini (aka Monolithe Noir) as guests.

The original idea of the Brussels section of ensemble 0 was to create an acoustic repertoire with few instruments, so that all the equipment could be carried to perform the music anywhere (in the street, in parks, in appartments and in music venues). Finally a few touches of electricity have been added on the album with the presence of Antoine Pasqualini’s modular synth.

What you hear is the sonified expression of the 3D structure of the protein with PDB ID 1akg (ALPHA-CONOTOXIN PNIB FROM CONUS PENNACEUS, see: http://dx.doi.org/10.2210/pdb1AKG/pdb), translated into an orchestral setting (koto [a Japanese string instrument], cello, double bass, viola, flute, and fluegelhorn). The koto is used to express the primary, secondary and tertiary structure of the protein.  

The piece reflects a classical period model of the hierarchical mapping to describe the 3D folded structure of a protein in musical space. The musical mapping begins from the primary amino acid sequence (GCCSLPPCALSNPDYCX) and encodes multiple hierarchical structural levels, and adds musical experimentation. 

We use the concept proposed by Yu, Buehler et al. (ACS Nano) to map amino acid sequences to music, and augment the mapping by adding more data. The 3D folded structure of a protein is coded by inserting strummed chords and interwoven melodies that code for the geometric arrangement of amino acids, the protein's tertiary structure. Rhythm and note volume code for secondary structure.

Markus J. Buehler is the McAfee Professor of Engineering at MIT, and a composer of experimental, classical and electronic music, with an interest in sonification. Using an approach termed "materiomusic", his artistic work explores the creation of new forms of musical expression - such as those derived from biological materials and living systems - as a means to better understand the underlying science and mathematics. One of his goals is to use musical and sound design as a novel and abstract way to model, optimize and create new forms of matter from the bottom up, and to assess cross-system design relationships. He is also interested in research to explore relationships between classical music, mathematics, and the physical and biological sciences, an in the mapping of models of consciousness across systems. In recent work he has developed a new framework to compose music based on proteins – the basic molecules of all life, as well as other physical phenomena such as fracturing, to explore similarities and differences across species, scales and between philosophical and physical models.
