The seeds of Captain Gone were sown in Leeds, England, where Norwegian vocalist/ guitarist Jon Arne Bjørnstad met English pianist and occasional trumpet player Lyndon Riley and they discovered a shared love of 50s jazz, corny but brilliant pop songs and all the classic songwriters from Cole Porter to Joni Mitchell and beyond.

When Jon returned (and Lyndon relocated) to Norway, their musical partnership evolved, and it wasn't long until they'd recruited Olav Senstad on bass and Eirik Skaar on drums and had started recording demos for what would be their first album, 'A Hundred Nights Like This'. They had to wait a while until Eirik finished training for his passenger airline licence, though - Iron Maiden aren't the only band with a pilot. 

After some low-key gigs, they pestered their way to playing a larger showcase at Soria Moria in Oslo. The concert was less than fantastic, both in terms of performance and audience turnout, but producer Jonas Kroon was in charge of the sound system that night, and he must have heard something he liked, because shortly afterwards the band were booked into his studio and the process of 'becoming' Captain Gone began in earnest. Songs were scrapped, new songs were written, arguments were had, and somewhere along the line, the band found out who they were. The resulting tunes were melancholic, darkly humorous, unashamed songs of love and longing, and packed full of gorgeous harmonies from an age before pop lost its innocence. That first album was released in 2013, and the single 'Romeo' was listed on NRK P1 for several weeks running, while some of the other tracks (Wildflower, Julian) also received nationwide airplay.

A few months later, the band were contacted by a guitarist, Ronny Yttrehus, who said he'd heard the single on the radio and that the only thing lacking from the sound was HIS guitar playing. For a while, he was fobbed off with polite excuses, but when he started turning up at gigs, he became harder to ignore. He was eventually invited to come to a rehearsal and 'try out' for the band. After a run through one song, he was asked, or rather, begged, to join. His inventive playing, which covers everything a guitar can do, from rock to jazz to Eno-style synth washes, was to tighten and toughen up the whole band and inspire a new direction for the recording of album number two, 'The Fortress’.

Now with a couple more years' gigging and studio experience under their belts, Captain Gone are looking forward to releasing The Fortress and taking their new tunes on the road. The album reflects the many hours the band have clocked up playing live and in the studio since their first album - there's a new confidence and swagger evident in their playing, and also in the production and songwriting. The opener 'My Love', seems to start where the first album left off, but takes a sideways shift into totally new territory, and there are plenty of surprises all the way to the last track, 'Stars Shine On', which actually features that most un-Captain Gone of things: an out-and-out rock guitar solo. Never say never...

London based singer songwriter guitarist Dion Palumbo is the driving force behind award winning 7 piece funk rock group “Palumbo”. He is also guitarist for Bengali folk star “Shapla Salique”.
Solo, he performs inspired folk jazz blues rock, telling engaging and humorous stories about life, love and the Universe.

Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, he has travelled a long way performing music living in Sydney, Liverpool (UK), Manchester and London, as well as performing in Dublin, Galway, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Geneva and Paris. Notably performing at London 2012 Paralympics - 2 hours of his own original material.
And … as well as playing pubs, clubs and festivals, Palumbo also conducts therapeutic music sessions in dementia homes and mental health centres in North London.

July 2013 his song "Try it Out" received airplay on BBC Introducing from Gary Crowley who described Palumbo and the Funk as “a musical powerhouse”

In 2017 Palumbo recorded "This Thing" based in the renown Berwick St Studios (Bowie, Sex Pistols) in Soho, London. 
Recording commenced the morning after the legendary artist David Bowie's passed away.
Ironically, "This Thing" is definitely influenced by and a tribute to the work of the late great songwriting master

There are essentially two things that educators love to do: teach and complain about teaching.  The latter tends to come with the territory of the former.  It’s not that teachers don’t love their jobs, students, or institutions, its just that each of those components can eventually weigh heavier and heavier as a semester progresses.  Whether teachers/lecturers/professors are developing a lesson plan, putting together a PowerPoint, Prezi, or Atavist presentation, answering emails, working on another degree, or looking for part-time, full-time, or tenured positions, the struggle is real.  The goal of the “Classroom Hacks” podcast is twofold.  Essentially, much like Duringofficehours.com, we are trying to provide an avenue for perspective and advice on teaching.  Moreover, we try to incorporate a little bit of lightheartedness and humor into our Podcast to help remind each other that we can relate to our interconnected, educational plight.             
Taking on Topics Longform:
Each episode we pick a particular topic and have a conversation about it.  Topics range from ice-breakers to group activities, student learning and modern projects.   My co-host and I have taught at various institutions and have also held different positions, both in and out of education, so we try to bring a little bit of our experiences, knowledge, and humor to each subject.     
More than just Dialogue:
One thing we try to do to separate our podcast from the traditional format is to mix in some humorous yarns about education.  Whether those are commercials, interviews, or parodies, our goal is to remind our audience to take our jobs seriously but ourselves lightly.

In conveying her creative output, Liz came up with a new, all-encompassing term—KenSoul. “KenSoul represents my Kenyan soul that allows me to stylishly weave stories of my Kenyan origin and global influences into the KenSoul experience,” she says of this description that is as original as the person behind it.

KenSoul is also the title of Liz’s first album, released to acclaim in 2010 - and is the reference point for her recently released follow-up, KenSoul, The Lotus Chapter. Traversing multiple musical influences and expressed in Luo, Swahili, English and French (all of which Liz speaks fluently), Liz’s two albums reflect her genre-agnostic sound, her Kenyan soul and her life experiences. Her humorous writing and skilled storytelling, combined with her smoky, sultry vocal abilities and mature yet playful sound, mark out Liz as one of Africa’s most notable artists.

“I come from a tribe called the Luo, which is one of 42 tribes in Kenya and is rooted in the western part of Kenya, by Lake Victoria,” she explains. “The Luo culture is very rich; music and dance is a part of our DNA.” 

Liz is named after her great-great-grandmother Elizabeth Loye, a talented singer and performer who was born around the 1860s and lived until the 1940s. 

Both of Liz’s albums feature songs from her childhood and traditional melodies – among them “Maro Pamore” off her 2010 debut KenSoul. “I love the melodies of that song and what it stands for,” says Liz of the recording (featuring Zambian-raised rapper, Zubz). KenSoul, The Lotus Chapter maintains the mix of genres that have influenced Liz (soul, hip hop, reggae, jazz, and blues) as well as the roots influence of the likes of Taraab music on songs like “Oringo Bayoyo” and “Msenangu”. As Liz puts it, “When I sing in my vernacular I know what I’m singing about”. 

Another influence on Liz’s creativity and music in particular, is Chakacha—a Swahili cultural dance that Liz learnt growing up in Kenya and which she describes as “the most sensual dance I know of beyond my geographical boundaries”. Those who’ve seen Liz perform live have witnessed how she weaves Chakacha into her live show, adding another layer to what is one of the most uplifting, near spiritual and joyous performances in contemporary African music. 

A standout feature of Liz’s energetic live shows is the visual element which makes full use of her unique fashion sense. The latter takes expression and influence from her fashion brand label highlighted by bold, elegant, timeless pieces that embrace self-definition through sleek cuts and simple yet provocative designs. Established eleven years ago, Liz Ogumbo’s Fashion offering epitomises attitude that comes from the inside—and this part of her creative life is as much a part of Liz’s soul as music is.
