ERRATUM MUSICAL is a label dedicated to experimental noise, art and poetry, based in Paris and run by Joachim Montessuis.

“Among the most exciting and ambitious new music ensembles in Washington, D.C.” (Kyle Gullings, A Composer’s Notebook), and “perhaps the DC region’s most exciting professional group dedicated to performing new classical music” (Jason McCool, The Pinkline Project), Great Noise Ensemble is a working embodiment of its mission to fight for the performance of new works and promote emerging talent in contemporary music.

Born in 2005 when composer and conductor Armando Bayolo placed an ad on Craigslist.org seeking like-minded musicians passionate about contemporary music, Great Noise Ensemble has become one of the most important and adventurous ensembles in the District of Columbia’s new music scene. Since its first concert in January, 2006, Great Noise Ensemble has presented the world premieres of some 23 new compositions as well as regional premieres and rare performances of some of the major works of the last 25 years by composers like Steve Reich, John Luther Adams, Marc Mellits, Poul Ruders and Louis Andriessen. They have presented concerts in venues ranging from intimate community concert spaces like the Patricia M. Sitar Center and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring to prestigious locales such as the National Gallery of Art, the Hirshhorn Gallery and Sculpture Gallery and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In 2008 Great Noise Ensemble became the Ensemble in Residence at The Catholic University of America’s Benjamin T. Rome School of Music, bringing at least two of its regular season programs to the university’s Ward Hall each year as well as fulfilling their educational mission by coaching student performers in rehearsals and performances of new works and through the reading and professional recording of new works by Catholic University student composers and headlining the graduate composition students’ annual New Voices Festival and competition. Great Noise Ensemble was also recently named the Ensemble in Residence at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, where they will headline a new music series beginning in the 2012-13 concert season.

Highlights of Great Noise Ensemble’s 2011-12 season include world premieres of works by Hannah Lash, David Smooke, Cornelius Dufallo, Sean Doyle and Randall Woolf and performances at the Catholic University of America, the Mansion at the Music Center at Strathmore, the Atlas Performing Arts Center as well as making its New York debut at the Cutting Edge New Music Series at Symphony Space.

Atau Tanaka’s first inspirations came  meeting John Cage. He studied at CCRMA with John Chowning and conducted research at IRCAM and Sony CSL. He formed Sensorband with Zbigniew Karkowski and Edwin van der Heide, S_S_S with Cecile Babiole and Laurent Dailleau, and performed with Merzbow, Otomo, and KK Null. He has presented his work at Ars Electronica, ZKM, Sonar, Transmediale, Eyebeam, SFMOMA.

James Webb is an artist, recognised for his site-specific interventions and installations. His practice often involves sound, found objects, and text, invoking references to literature, cinema, and the conceptualist traditions. By shifting objects, techniques, and forms beyond their original contexts and introducing them to different environments, Webb creates new spaces of tension. These spaces bind Webb’s background in religion, theatre, and advertising, offering poetic inquiries into the economies of belief and dynamics of communication in our contemporary world.

As Brandon LaBelle writes, “The works of James Webb circulate around a complex mixture of emotional and affective states; of longing and despair, of the ecstatic and of hopefulness, states of bodies and minds that move throughout his practice to raise questions of individuality and community, belonging and displacement, fragmentation and recuperation.” (Xenagogue, edited by Anthea Buys, published by the Hordaland Kunstsenter, 2015.)

Major group exhibitions include the 13th Biennial of Dakar (2018), 4th Prospect Triennial of New Orleans (2017), Documenta 14 (2017), 13th Biennial of Sharjah (2017), 12th Bienal de la Habana (2015), 55th Biennale di Venezia (2013), 3rd Marrakech Biennale (2009), Melbourne International Arts Festival (2009), and the 8th Biennale d’Art Contemporain de Lyon (2007). "weave/unravel" is a collaborative duo between hervé perez (saxophone) and constantin popp (live-sampling and processing).


the improvisations focus on extended techniques and the abstract peripheral sounds of the saxophone.
these sounds are then magnified and exploded through a delicate mixture of close-miking, amplification and diffusion. the saxophone becomes disembodied in favour of projecting it's inner space to the public space of the concert hall.

the process of sampling and spatialisation merges the performers' identities and places the listener inside the hyper-instrument.

Hervé Perez sound artist/composer from France, based in Sheffield (UK). His work fuses experimental electroacoustic music with free improvisation and immersive sound art. His research approaches sound as vibration in relation to space and the body.

Constantin Popp, born in Berlin, focuses on composition and interactive performance of acousmatic music. He transforms specific features of instruments and spaces into magnified enveloping soundworlds. He loves intimate and quiet sounds, drones and distortion. He studied electroacoustic composition at the HfM Weimar, DE, with Robin Minard and at the University of Manchester, UK, with David Berezan. Constantin's research at the University of Manchester is funded by the DAAD, Victor Sayer and the AHRC. He collaborated with musicians, dancers and film artists, such as laborgras, Markus Wintersberger and Zbigniew Karkowski.
