Ghosts of Sine and Vine [disquiet0326]

Several tracks of staked warbling sine waves produced in pure data. These use mutiple sine waves with the shifting volumes to give a warbling effect. Some of the bassier tracks had a side chained beat pumping them using an expander gate- this was in time with the end-of-vinyl click sample. some other added crackle  and click samples . Compiled in pro tools. Only two of the drone tracks had delay/reverb the rest of the tracks are dry.

Ghost Of Sine And Vine

Step 1: Locate the latest instrument, piece of music/sound software, or related technology that has come into your possession. 
Step 2: Employ only the single thing identified in Step 1 to compose and record a short track.

My latest purchase was a Tibetan Bowl you see in the photo, I bought it last Sunday in a garage sale here in Paris.  It was a deal and included 100 incense sticks ....
Now: my previous purchase was, like a year ago, another Tibetan Bowl, so I did many recordings using that one  in the past year. But the challenge forces me to go back into the bronze age. Again.

I used the two sound you make with this thing, _Tap_ that's a "hit" on the edge of the bowl with the fat wood stick/mallet and a _Rub_ drone turning the stick around the bowl's edges.
Then I just pitched up and down to several different notes and constructed this soundscape. But the source is just that single bowl. And 40 sec Lexicon Reverbs with Wah Wah...

No synth used off course, nothing but the bowl.

i think the last instrument i got was art pyrite softsynth. i try not to get too much new stuff; work with what i've got (depth v breadth / necessity is the mother of invention etc)

i played for a few minutes and turned up the depth and feedback on the drone setting throughout. weirdly when i looked at the recording it said i'd been playing for over 9 minutes. just did a little limiting and normalized it.

Be still, my soul, and wait (Disquiet0372)

Performed by Ben Clark and Antonin Granier on 13.6.19 at LOOSE, LINE, LAYER in St. Mary-at-Hill, London.

The piece invites a child-like curiosity towards the instrument, and simply investigates its sonic possibilities. The materials arose from working collaboratively with percussionists Ben Clark and Antonin Granier. The first movement explores flexibility, the second looping elements, the third resonance.

Morn Lighting (solo voice track)  NOTES

January 13, 2021 Naviar Haiku #367, a poem by Morikawa Kyoroku:

morning light
the first blossoms of spring
bloom over-night

The Haiku was divided into 12 syllables and randomly reordered. This was done 12 times creating 12 lines of random text from the original Haiku. I recorded myself reading the text. 

The track can be chopped into phrases to make it longer or add space for other sounds.

This is my 1st of 2 contributions to the Disquiet Junto 0473...a duet with moduS ponY's contribution 'New Unit' to disquiet0472. It is called 'Leaf Blower'

I recorded the sound of leaf blowers working in Kennington Park, South London, on a grey, covid-19 lockdown day, during my one rationed daily excursion. These leaf blowers appear twice, obviously, in the track but also inscrutably as the sampled waveform which provides the melodic/harmonic base. There is subtle modulation of the pitch, and filter throughout. Tools used include:

Disquiet Junto Project 0476: IAH Forecast

Not sure where this brain fart came from… a new genre? Blues Hop? I just threw a bunch of stuff at a blues riff and went from there. Vocal sample courtesy of Amy Kirkpatric.

APOB - Fuzzy Condition [disquiet0476]

The first thing that stuck out to me from this image was the traffic, so I got some traffic samples. The balconies made me think of replicating the moment of hearing other people in the distance/through walls/in an obfuscated way so I downloaded samples of people talking. All the samples are from freesound.

The image has a haunting, distant quality to it, something I wanted to capture with a synth. I played around with the Applied Acoustics Systems Ultra Analog Session plugin in Ableton and I quite liked the synthy sound of it. The bit at the end is the same synth but pitched down. 

All the samples have a low-pass filter applied, the vocal samples have multiple echos, delays and instances of Multiband Dynamics to create a distant, removed feeling to it. I chopped up some bits from the traffic samples and spread them through the song.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications.
