Bečva is a river located in the Eastern part of Czech Republic. In September 2020, several chemical leaks into the river caused the poisoning and subsequent death of 40 tons of wildlife in the waterway – an unprecedented catastrophe. Growing up in Přerov, Bečva was an ever-present part of Tomáš Niesner’s youth and this environmental disaster affected him deeply. In an effort to understand the river better and inspired by Werner Herzog’s ‘Of Walking in Ice’, Niesner set out on a journey from the spring of Bečva to its confluence with river Morava, a journey of over 100km. It was a romantic quest in wholly unromantic circumstances, an attempt to expiate the irreversible.

Bečvou, the album, is a travelogue of sorts, an aural chronicle of this journey. Arranged and composed around field recordings from the river banks, it also features Tomáš Niesner on guitar, zither and modular synthesizer, unlike many of his previous releases where he’d zero in on one instrument. Combining elements of fingerstyle guitar, musique concrete and drone, it’s an elemental tapestry of enveloping textures, shimmering guitar motifs and soaring synth sounds. At one moment reminiscent of the meandering improvisations of East of the Valley Blues, at others calling to mind the ecstatic minimalistic compositions of Caterina Barbieri and oscillating between moods like dread and hope thoughout, Bečvou is Tomáš Niesner’s most complete statement to date, fascinating in both concept and execution.

Tommy Four Seven to release Veer Remixed via his own label, 47. 

On November 8th, the British DJ and producer, Tommy Four Seven, will release Veer Remixed, a double vinyl LP featuring remixes by Ansome, SØS Gunver Ryberg, Rhys Fulber, Pessimist, Parrish Smith, Stenny, Silent Servant, Machine Woman, Homemade Weapons and Sawf. 

Each artist - making their debut on the 47 label - has selected a track taken from Tommy’s second album Veer which was released earlier this year via his own 47 imprint. The result is a collection of 10 finely crafted reinterpretations of the original works.

Following the original album track order, Veer Remixed is designed to pull the listener into its parallel world, from roughed up off-beat cuts by Ansome, to ethereal post-punk takes by Silent Servant. Bone rattling Drum & Bass by Homemade Weapons to guitar fused dark beat from Parrish Smith.

Tocsin - Inferno [Ways to Die]

Warm Winters Ltd. is pleased to announce JC Leisure’s (@jcleisure) latest solo release, 'Mutations For'. The album is built from the artist's collection of mixtapes from circa 1992 onwards that distil the counterculture of rave, free parties and pirate radio broadcasts. 

For the last couple of years this archive has formed the basis for JC Leisure’s hybrid DJ cassette sets, a handful of which are archived on Bandcamp. Aware of each cassette's cultural legacy, with 'Mutations For' JC Leisure sets out to give the archive a higher form of autonomy. Similar to the audio-to-midi processes he developed with his band Raft of Trash (where they use the world-building game Simcity3000 as raw material) the cassette tapes are sampled live and fed to synthesizers, software patches and samplers; allowing them to write their own melodies and rhythms. Leisure has worked with and alongside these results and offers them up on 'Mutations For' as an alternative future to a counterculture's unstable history. 

These ideas are explored further in collaboration with designer Afonso de Matos on the poster that forms the physical realization of this work.

Full release coming March 20, 2020.

The work of the Danketsu group - formerly 9, now 10 - has always revolved around ideas of unity, inclusion and equality. Their latest, completely improvised album titled 'From a distance, everything shines' embodies these ideals; in the subtlety of each contribution, the gentleness of each performer, the willingness to contribute to something greater than each member on their own. The music here is largely graceful, sublime, almost peaceful, and even the more harrowing moments dissolve into a conclusion that's uplifting. The title of the track “ชั่วเจ็ดทีดีเจ็ดหน” is a Thai Buddhist proverb which translates to “Bad seven times, good seven times”. Patrick Shiroishi, the leader of the group, explains that to him this means that “there is something good even in a bad situation.” 

The audio above is an excerpt from the piece which is almost 32 minutes long. It will be released by Warm Winters Ltd. in full on cassette and on digital formats/platforms on August 21.

Danketsu 10 - ชั่วเจ็ดทีดีเจ็ดหน (Excerpt)

Raft of Trash is a generative music project exploring the sounds of systems using the natural rhythms of environmental dialogue in the world-building game SimCity 3000. It is a collaboration between sound artists/musicians Andrew PM Hunt (aka Dialect) and JC Leisure, and designer Thom Isom.  

Like the group’s early EPs, their debut album Likeness on the Edge of Town showcases the breadth of possibilities emerging from their unique process. Whilst playing SimCity 3000, the in-built sound effects of the game are converted and repurposed into MIDI data which is then fed to Hunt and Leisure's synths and samplers in real time. The resulting soundscape, imprinted with the dynamics of a simulated environment, is then augmented with live guitar, spoken word and field recordings to create an uncanny collage of wild synthesis, experimental narrative and bending, viscous guitar.  

Inspired by Fluxus artist Alison Knowles, the spoken word passages sprinkled across the record act as part travel journal, part system theory field guide as “someone guiding you through the simulated desert landscape, and through some kind of inner journey”. Exploring for instance the connections between the irregularities we discover in our functioning bodies and the impact of environmental influences or describing the fullness of the reality of stopping at a truck stop, these passages are an illuminating exploration of the complexity of living systems and real-life situations. Subtle musical references to Americana and sounds sourced from the desert around Joshua Tree contribute to a journey-like mood throughout the record. 

Musically, the record remains in largely abstract territory. Synths sprawl, crawl and fly above a sonic bed of creaks, ripples and bleeps; nothing is at it seems. This ambiguous relationship between the organic and the synthetic further highlights the themes explored by the group.
