Technology and imperfection. The raw and the processed. Curator and curated. Solo explorer and gregarious collaborator. The life and work of Taylor Deupree are less a study in contradictions than a portrait of the multidisciplinary artist in a still-young century.

Deupree is an accomplished sound artist whose recordings, rich with abstract atmospherics, have appeared on numerous record labels, and well as in site-specific installations at such institutions as the ICC (Tokyo, Japan) and the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (Yamaguchi, Japan). He started out, in the 1990s, making new noises that edged outward toward the fringes of techno, and in time he found his own path to follow. His music today emphasizes a hybrid of natural sounds and technological mediation. It’s marked by a deep attention to stillness, to an almost desperate near-silence. His passion for the studio as a recording instrument is paramount in his work, but there is no hint of digital idolatry. If anything, his music shows a marked attention to the aesthetics of error, to the short circuits not only in technological systems but in human perception.

And though there is an aura of insularity to Depuree’s work, he is a prolific collaborator, having worked with the likes of Stephan Mathieu, Christopher Willits, Kenneth Kirschner, Eisi, Frank Bretschneider, Richard Chartier, Savvas Ysatis, and Tetsu Inoue.

Deupree dedicates as much time to other people’s music as he does to his own. In 1997 he founded the record label 12k, which since then has released over 80 recordings by some of the most accomplished musicians and sound artists of our time, among them Alva Noto, Steve Roden, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Steven Vitiello. Many share with Deupree an interest in stark minimalism, but the label has also found room for, located a common ground with, the acoustic avant-garage, the instrumental derivations of post-rock, and the synthetic extremes of techno.

And collectively, the cover jackets to the 12k album releases have served as an ongoing exhibit of Deupree’s photography, its lofi aesthetic, with an emphasis on damage and wear and antiquated tech, closely paralleling his music. (His photos have also graced numerous books, design anthologies, and other recordings and projects.)

Deupree continues to evolve his sound with an ambition and drive that is masked by his music’s inherent quietude. He approaches each project with an expectation of new directions, new processes, and new junctures.

Kid Fonque has become a vital part of South African electronic music and club culture over the last 20 years. Uniquely accomplished in both influence and scope, he is an over-achiever in every one of his roles; DJ, Producer Label Owner, promoter and more recently, Radio Presenter.

Firmly established as a tastemaker in South Africa, Kid Fonque’s influence can be felt and heard in the music of the many artists he has helped nurture with his role as label manager of Africa’s seminal dance label Soul Candi Records and now his new venture with Jullian Gomes in their new label Stay True Sounds.

Kid Fonque’s talent is the type that refuses to acknowledge boundaries of any kind – be they genres or borders. The respect he is paid by the industry is a result of his no compromise attitude to playing and making music. Rather than following trends, Kid Fonque has always done things his own way. Importantly, every record he reaches for bares all the hallmarks of the Kid Fonque sound - a golden thread that ties all his sets together somehow. 

Like a painter dabbing his brush into different hues, Fonque’s palette embraces everything from bass and broken beats to bossa nova, hip hop and every shade of house - and with this open-minded approach, he’s been deconstructing dancefloors at home and abroad for well over a decade. Over the last couple years he’s played dates in Hong Kong, Dubai, the UK and Switzerland.

Kid Fonque has just recently started his own radio show called Selective Styles on South Africa’s very own 5FM.  Selective Styles has given Kid the platform to showcase the hidden talent from all over South Africa electronic, house, soul & Hip Hop Community while delving into international releases weekly.

In 2011, Kid Fonque launched his long-running monthly night, #2SIDESOFTHEBEAT as a platform to showcase underground music from all genres at the same venue. Dubstep and house rubs shoulders with hip hop, broken beat and everything in between. Kid Fonque handpicks the line-up which has seen esteemed musos like Dego, King Britt, Swindle, Mala, Nightmares On Wax, Zaki Ibrahim and local stars like Jullian Gomes, Cuebur, Kenzhero and The Brother Moves On all on one stage.

In 2014 Kid Fonque moved into the producer’s chair and released his critically acclaimed debut artist album Kid Fonque and Friends and a string of remixes. 

Two singles from the album “BE”, “Usangikhumbula” and a recent collaboration with D-Malice “All This Time” did serious damage in the charts – all claiming the number 1 spot on the YFM Urban Top 20. His recent studio output has paired him with luminaries like Clara Hill, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Nia Andrews, Jonny Miller,  Kev Brown, Okmalumkoolkat and Atjazz. 

2016 has been music as usual and the year started with a Boiler Room set where he was asked to represent his newfound label ‘Stay True Sounds’ and got to share the platform with label partner Jullian Gomes with a back-to-back set recorded and played in Cape Town’s Langa.

2017 sees plenty of new projects on the horizon for Fonque including a full length collaboration with UK’s D-Malice under the alias rkls due for release on r2 London which features a rich and varied cast of artists including Kev Brown, Melo B Jones, Sio, John Robinson and many more.

Whether he’s behind the decks, running Stay True Sounds, preparing for his weekly radio show or in studio making otherworldly music, Kid Fonque’s sonic adventures continue to fill dance floors and thrill earholes, pay attention!

Sun-El Musician is not just a Dj, His music sound will take you to an amazing bliss and leaving you feeling reinvigorated. Sun El’s approach to production is unbound by genre. He has applied himself and embraced the gift that was afforded to him.


Sun-El’s ability has produced various songs for the Songbird Bucie’s (Shela, Indukenhle, Mid-night and Hard to get) .He also co-produced the award winning hit “Shela” which landed Bucie a Metro Fm award. He has produced for various artists among others Demor, Zakes Bantwini, Shota and Thiwe.

Musician, producer, DJ, and music enthusiast alike, Sun-El hails out of Mooiriver, KwaZulu Natal. When not performing, he spends his time in the studio creating his own music… aided by over a decade of working in studio and an upbringing in a very musically influenced home. Sun El ended up with quite a mixed spectrum of musical influence. Today, this translates into sets where he picks apart and infuses together all the pieces of this music that he loves best: beautiful synth work, ethereal backdrops, brooding basslines, and occasional vocal hooks… all on top of a pronounced foot-shuffling house beat.

Having spent many years signed under Demor Music as a producer and Bucie's stage dj producing well known songs and playing both locally and international night clubs alongside local hard-hitters and national acts alike), Sun-El has overtime developed his signature sound. For him, it’s all about mood and a deep, hypnotic groove…producing and playing those tracks that get you tapping your feet and nodding your head without you realising it, regardless of genre, tempo, style. Don’t be surprised when you suddenly find yourself dancing.

Ocoeur is the moniker that French producer Franck Zaragoza uses to perform, record and, release his electronic/ambient compositions. Zaragoza was born in 1988 in Bruges, France, and began learning piano and music in his youth. His influences are vast; however, he mainly culls his inspiration from classical music, movies, and soundtracks. He has also sighted artists such as Vangelis, Boards of Canada, and Moby as influences.

Zaragoza’s music is minimalist, introspective, and immersive, with a penchant for dreamlike and cinematic sounds. His works come wrapped in concept and can embody either experimental/electronic glitch textures and meticulous sound design or neo-classical, focusing on more intimate, dynamic, and organic atmospheres.

Since 2013, Ocoeur has been releasing albums with the n5MD record label and also composes for videogames and documentaries.
