The Uncanny Valley is a psychological phenomenon where human-like figures or entities, such as robots, animations, or mannequins, evoke feelings of unease or discomfort when they appear almost, but not quite, human. The term suggests a “valley” in emotional response: as a non-human entity becomes more human-like, our emotional connection increases, but if it becomes too realistic without being fully convincing, the response dips into discomfort or eeriness. This reaction is thought to arise because these entities challenge our perception of what is human, highlighting subtle imperfections that feel unnatural or unsettling. I’ve tried to capture this sense of unease in this piece by juxtaposing light against dark, organic against synthetic, 7 against 9 against 11, and so on…
