Mujō, a profound and ancient concept rooted in Buddhist philosophy, encapsulates the transitory nature of existence. This Japanese term, often translated as "impermanence" or "constancy of change," serves as a reminder of the inherent fragility of life and all temporal things. In a world where everything is in a perpetual state of flux, mujō invites contemplation on the fleeting nature of joy, sorrow, and the very essence of being. 

Mujō's significance extends beyond philosophical musings; it deeply influences Japanese culture and aesthetics. Traditional Japanese art forms like ikebana, wabi-sabi, and haiku often draw inspiration from the concept of mujō. These artistic expressions seek to capture the beauty of the ephemeral, embracing the fleeting moments that define our existence. Thus, mujō serves as a catalyst for finding profound beauty in the transient and mundane. 

Drawing inspiration from the concept of mujō, Zensō’s latest album once again immerses listeners in his distinctive style of ambient-jazz fusion. This musical journey seamlessly melds the tranquil tones of ambient music with the intricate rhythms of jazz, using generative soundscapes and field recordings as the backdrop for elaborate melodic and percussive improvisations.

There are only a few artists out there whose aesthetic resonates with my entire being. Jason van Wyk is one of them. And at this point, it almost seems that it doesn't matter which route he goes with his music - I will always be there, absorbing it all. Except, of course, that he manages to go down the same road that I've been on myself. These are richly textured cinematic atmospherics, with gently modulated open-air pads, moving bass, and elemental particles of rhythm and sound. Shuffling grains of lo-fi sonics ebb and flow like night-time waves. Everything appears to be perfectly held together, with just the right amount of reverb and space. And then the piano comes in. Maybe it's just a few notes, but it's enough to tell a story. And I am listening with awe. I've said this before and I'll say it again - perhaps the best compliment I can give to any musician is to say that I wish I'd make such music as them. And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then let me imitate van Wyk's sound all day long. But all these words aside, here's a piece which I am honoured to premiere. It's called "Undoing" and it's just a glimpse into the Descendants, which I cannot wait to own on white 12". I hope that you agree.

TRACK PREMIERE : Jason van Wyk - Undoing

I find it absolutely fascinating and, at the same time, truly inspiring thought, that with the untimely passing of Jóhann Jóhannsson in February of 2018 (wow, almost four years ago now!), he still really lives on through the music he made. And not just through his own. And although he left an incredible void, it's not like someone just stepped into his shoes. Instead, a significant number of collaborators and followers that he touched through the years continued to carry his legacy through their own unique sound. His light didn't go out - it just exploded into hundreds of thousands of fragments of many other lights, that are now expanding, forming their gravity, and with time growing larger. And I sort of wonder if that would have happened if it didn't happen the way it already has. That is an absolutely fascinating and truly inspiring thought with which I opened this write-up. In today's track premiere, we have precisely just that. Danish composer Jonas Colstrup worked closely with Jóhann throughout the years, collaborating on scores for the Japanese films Blind Massage (2014) and The Shadow Play (2018). Inspired by the late musician's approach to neo-classical minimalism carried forth with the cinematic elegance, as well as the incredible score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto and Bryce Dessner for The Revenant (Milan, 2015), and contemporary compositions by William Walton and Arvo Pärt, Colstrup gently sculpts a sonic chrysalis of emotion, in which one wants to wait out all current angst. And if this was a blind listening session, you may have even thought I'd uncovered an unreleased Johannsson track, with those scaling chord progressions and the beautiful arrangements performed by the Budapest Art Orchestra and Theatre of Voices. But to be clear, once again, this is not a copy, made from a mould lifted from Jóhann's work. It is an unmatched gorgeous sculpture, on which you may find his imprint, still warm to the touch.

Lost Tribe Sound proudly introduces 'In The Octopus Pond', the first album in a series of album from Arrowounds, titled, the 'Therianthrope Series.' With previous works, Ryan Chamberlain has taken us through personal lows and bleak watery worlds in disrepair. However, 'In The Octopus Pond' sheds much of that skin and sets course for lush, green environments steeped in the bizarre. That said, this new material sounds more accessible than ever. The first entry in the trilogy draws from a range of musical influences, Can, Bark Psychosis, Young Gods, Slowdive, Durutti Column, Seefeel and much of early 4AD.

Rather than tackle some inner monologue or global crisis with the album, ITOP is instead accompanied by an obscure short story and visuals just as fitting. As both Arrowounds and LTS would prefer to take some time away from heavy realities and make up our own.

For here it begins and circles back into itself…
In the days before the great boil, the earth was lush and green, cared for by a race of mystic octopoed. In acts of preservational instinct, many chose to build their temples high on top of engineered tumuli, weary of prior flooding and wildfires that drastically disfigured the landscape. It was here that these priests of arms who carved ornate reliefs into the great pillars of obsidian and bone, dug down seeking mineral deposits in the earthen abyss and found a gestating world beneath the below... to be continued

Here’s a new experimental ambient-jazz piece about impermanence. Musically, I’m once again experimenting with subtly unstable rhythms and vague meters to create a type of “rhythmic dissonance”.

We live near a creek and walk along its banks on most days. The surrounding fields are full of thistles, which attract large numbers of goldfinches this time of year. It’s a beautiful scene I’ve attempted to capture in this composition. I hope you enjoy it!

Shortly after releasing his highly acclaimed ‘The Benoît Pioulard Listening Matter’(Kranky), Pioulard left on tour to Europe in order to promote the album. This tour took him to several distinctive places ranging from urban Brussels to rural France and the mystic capital city of Iceland, Reykjavik.

Once returned to Seattle, these new impressions and memories formed the inspiration to make ‘Slow spark, soft spoke’. Not surprisingly, the album continues in the same vein as his tour cd ‘Lignin Poise’ - which was repressed on vinyl by Beacon Sound - and is characterized by slowly moving lo-fi ambient textures. The album reveals Pioulards most melancholic side and once again shows his capabilities to bring beautiful sonic narratives with only a few instrumental layers.

‘Slow spark, soft spoke’ was initially released on tape on Dauw but sold out quickly during pre-order. After having received only sublime reviews and tons of request to re-issue the album, we now decided to give it a well deserved vinyl repress.

For this vinyl edition, Pioulard decided to add 2 totally new tracks in addition to the 4 initial ones. These new tracks are presented as the single 'Athanasy, 1993' which will be released and announced with the vinyl pre-order on October 4th. All together, the initial EP and the new single form a consistent full length which adds to his impressive and ever growing catalogue.

‘Slow spark, soft spoke’ will be released on October 26th on a limited  vinyl edition (200 heavyweight clear vinyl) and digitally. The tape comes with original hand-printed artwork by Femke Strijbol and will be accompanied by a unique polaroid taken by Benoît Pioulard (limited to 50 only).

Four years ago, the California based musician r beny came on the radar with numerous videos on youtube and instagram in which he explored the world of tape and sound synthesis. You could easily see his music growing and pretty soon he came to the fore as a master in modular synthesis. 

This culminated in several solo releases and live shows (e.g. with Bing & Ruth, Suzanne Ciani). Herein, r beny, clearly showed his capacities to combine detailed and fragile melodies with subtle textures in order to create sonic narratives with a highly emotional character.
 
“Echo's Verse” forms no exception on that regard and continues along the same melancholic lines of his previous work. However, whereas the initial albums were much more centred around feelings of loneliness, isolation and solitude, the new album clearly moves away from a sole focus on sad and distressing emotions. “Echo's Verse” touches the other side of the spectrum as it is about emotional connections, bonds and not feeling alone in the universe.

“Echo's Verse” will be out on May 15th on heavyweight clear vinyl* and comes with original handprinted artwork by Femke Strijbol. In addition to the regular version, there will also be a special edition (30 copies) including a unique 1-minute tape loop alongside the record.
