These pieces came to be when I first heard Jack's fantastic soundscapes. I felt they needed something to really bring them out and realise their full potential, like a voice-over, rather than singing, so I suggested it to Jack, who said: "Hook me up then" in his laconic Bostonian drawl (I do an impression, but I've never actually heard him speak. He may be mute for all I know) and I immediately thought of Marty Lucas (who I didn't know at the time). I initially hoped that Marty would have some lyrics lying around in an old bureau in his bohemian Indianaian (is that even a word?) garret on his ranch. No such luck. I had to do lyrics (initially) as well as produce the stuff. What had I let myself in for? No wonder my striking good looks have been gradually eroded, Dorian Grey picture-style, through lack of sleep. But I love producing and playing on these. Since then we got Seattle poet, Tanisha Jackland and Edgar Allen Poe (from Massachusetts) on board to assist. Tanisha, a truly marvelous poet, is so helpful, accommodating and prolific - Edgar never comments for some reason. Maybe it's not his kind of music.

DOG FACE BRIDGE
It was late at night, October 1953
Wind howling, branches humming, leaves raining down from every tree
I was trying to tune the radio, but the signal seemed to shift and fade.
Bits of news from the Korean War, prisoners, whispers of atrocity,
Just then I heard a fearsome racket from the road down by the Kankakee,
The night Howard DeSabatine crashed his Chevy out on Dog Face Bridge.

My Dad appeared at the doorway, he said, “Call the sheriff right away,
“Howard D” and Linda just flew by, like bats to hell, I’m going to see if they’re okay,
He’s nothing but an aggravation, he’s no damn good if you ask me.”
My Mom said, “Better hurry out there Robert, they might be needing help right away,
It’s windy, cold and lonely tonight down by the Kankakee.”
The night Howard DeSabatine crashed his Chevy out on Dog Face Bridge.

My sister said, “You know, I think Daddy’s right, Howie’s just plain hard and mean,
Why just this morning Linda phoned me up, saying they had a terrible fight,
She said he kicked out Kansas, drove down to the swamp and shoved him out the door,
She was just a girl when she got that dog, she’d had him seven years or more.
I told her I saw Kansas, lonely and lost last night on the road down by the Kankakee.”

No, it wasn’t long at all, my Dad came back in looking awful pale and kinda’ small,
He never said much about what he saw that night
But the schoolyard buzzed with the lurid tale alright
Howard D, he walked away from that crash, saying he had no memory
But Linda’s arm was tangled in the steering wheel,
Her neck was severed by the windshield glass
They found a collie’s headless body sprawled thirty feet out in the swampy grass
They said they heard a howling through the misty moonlight over Dog Face Bridge.

Some people say seeing is believing.
Well, I don’t know about you,
But I’ve seen a few…
Things.
I don’t want to believe.

That was a long time ago, the road is only lonelier because the bridge fell down,
Sometimes around Halloween kids looking for a thrill venture out from town.
They say that if you stand just so, you’ll see a woman’s body with the head of a dog
Beckon like Anubis from the water’s down below, but me, I don’t go,
I can’t stand the sound of wind whistling through the trees
I never drive alone on that road down to the Kankakee, I don’t want to see

THE TREES WERE HERE FIRST
She always felt 
Her wounds around the trees
They kept her 
imperceptibly alive.

Still her legs were like anvils
rooted into the earth
Big black roots, 
veins hugging the world.

I could see she was
A woman who understood.
She could move the sky to open
to come crashing down on the land
The envy of perpetrators.
 
There is this knowing
most all trees have
and it is a united front
a quiet front
that keeps our heads from imploding
 
They are the antidote

This is about how life is constantly presenting challenges. We must learn from each incident/experience and use that learning to try and be more resilient and be able to move forward. 
I wrote it on my 3/4 size Hofner classical guitar. It’s first song! I used open G tuning after being encouraged to try it by Mark Spruce (Original Spruce - great songs- give them a listen!). Thanks Mark!

"Hunk of Junk" has been written in a digital 4-track collaboration in February 2024. I started with the guitar track, SPH recorded the organ, Cheslain lyrics and vocals and Mt. Mélodie added drum track and mixed everything. When I started this song, I had no idea how it would turn out, and I am very grateful for the additions and the final mixdown.
