This week's prompt was to compose music that listens to itself.

So glad you asked! I have been wanting to make a project like this for years as part of my interest in structured improvisation.

I'd still like to do something clever with MAX/MASP and MIDI, but for now I kept myself quite busy with using audio processing in Ableton Live.

Basically, I tried to construct effects chains that would grab short snippets of audio (from a piano improv and also from each other!), process them, and and repeat them much later in the piece (via gates, envelope followers, or LFOs mapped to the inputs of delays and pitch-shifters). I altered the musical material using pitch-shifters (Cableguys, Ableton's Shifter) or delays with very short settings to make percussive sounds.

I also really tried to prioritize changing pitches, with the idea that altering the source tonal material would be a fun nod to classical music's idea of theme and development.

Then I loosely grouped them into things that generated low pitches, medium pitches, and high pitches.

I had a *lot* of material at the end, so I ended up cutting out a few tracks completely. 

Beyond that, my editing was minimal. I managed to volume spikes, and I also cut out some parts of the piano improv, because the generative devices were making their own musical material!

I'm happy with this one - I think it could be done at about 2 minutes and 40 seconds, but I figure this is a good audience for a slightly longer version of the piece.

Process notes -
This track started out as a loop that I made in FL Studio on 05 Feb 2005 called "orchomainb." I have folders and folders of these old FL loops on my drive and backup, maybe 100-200, starting around 2000/01.

I imported a piece of this loop, which was something like bass, drums and some strings into Ableton Live as a wav file and had Live create a melody MIDI clip from it.

A rough idea of the tools I used
- 8 native Live MIDI effects
- Arturia Piano V3
- several of Live's and Arturia's delays and compressors
- Puremagnetik's Partikl delay
- Mastered with Ozone 9 on a fairly gentle setting.

This original version of "Pinch Appeal" was submitted as part of ​Disquiet Junto Project 0621: The Leftovers. The Assignment: Use recently discarded material to make something new.

“Recent” is relative here - I have recordings back to the 80s. The early 2000’s was the first time I amassed more of my own audio (and photos, btw) than I could use, so I reached back to that time. I wanted to honor that time in my life today.

It would also be fair to note that I have about 4-8 albums/releases under this name that remain unreleased.

This week, the prompt for Disquiet Junto 0634, "Bust a Move", asked us to build on a foundation of a piece of classical music heard through a wall or floor.

I chose Schubert's "Trio In E-Flat, Opus 100",  because I am a child of the 80s and The Hunger had a huge influence on me growing up as a babygoth.

I used a physical effect send to route the audio through a chain of guitar pedals, then loop back in to a new audio track in the DAW. I made three new tracks this way, with the pedals tweaked live, each one an interpretation of the source audio. The pedals I used were a Meris Enzo guitar synthesizer, an Eventide H9 Harmonizer, and the famous Walrus Audio ARP-87. 

NOTE: Headphones are recommended as a first line of defense against abduction. As a rule, Schubert never wore headphones. And we all know what happened to him.
