"El ciberespacio y el espacio mágico son constructos que se manifiestan puramente en la imaginación. Ambos espacios se constituyen enteramente por tu pensamiento y tus creencias."[1]

BIT.R.I.O.L. es una instalación de Realidad Aumentada y pieza sonora meditativa inspirada en la tradición alquímica y los ritos iniciáticos.

El título de la obra proviene de la sigla V.I.T.R.I.O.L. un término propio de la alquimia que alude a “Visita Interiora Terræ Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem”, o en Español “Visita el centro de la Tierra y rectificando encontrarás la piedra oculta” 

Retomando esta tradición alquímica, pero anclada en el SXXI y las prácticas de Tecnopaganismo, BIT.R.I.O.L. propone un espacio liminal esotérico de contemplación, reflexion y trascendencia. 

A través de herramientas tecnológicas como los teléfonos móviles o tablets (nuestro mercurio y azufre) y de la egrégora que se genera en los espacios virtuales que habitamos en la red, se crea un templo virtualizado. 

En Magic Squares and Future Beats, Genesis P-Orridge alude a la alquimia de la tecnología: “Burroughs, y Gysin, ambos me dijeron algo que resonó en mi hasta ahora. Ellos señalaban que los alquimistas siempre usaron el equipamiento y las matemáticas más modernas, la ciencia más precisa de su tiempo. En consecuencia, para practicar efectivamente la magia en tiempos contemporáneos uno debe valerse de las teorías y tecnologías más vanguardistas de la era”[2]

Por medio de un código QR ubicado en el espacio físico de la sala (a modo de códex o llave secreta) se accede a un portal de Realidad Aumentada, un espacio liminal mediado por un dispositivo móvil con conexión a internet que ubica al espectador en un entorno inmersivo, inmaterial, simbólico y contemplativo en 360 grados. 

La pieza sonora que acompaña a la obra fue creada sintetizando de forma digital y analógica voces humanas, grabaciones electromagnéticas y grabaciones de campo, y en conjunto con las fragancias difundidas en el espacio acentúan el carácter sagrado e inmersivo de la obra y remiten a los mantras y cantos religiosos, y a los bálsamos e inciensos de los templos.

El espectador se ubica entonces en el rol del neófito, único recipiente y habitante de la obra. Su vivencia es iniciática y significa la experiencia. En esta suerte de cámara de reflexiones se encuentran elementos simbólicos no explicitados. La experiencia es vivencial y parte de un hallazgo, quien lo vive lo interpreta. Así como al hallar un cairn milenario, un petroglifo o un artefacto desconocido, el universo de referencias personales y la conciencia colectiva trabajan en la experiencia.

La tecnología como producto humano, ya indivisible de cualquier otra expresión, también tiene un rol en nuestra construcción espiritual. En su tercera ley Clarke afirma que “Cualquier tecnología suficientemente avanzada es indistinguible de la magia”[3]  El Metaverso, aunque inmaterial, no es un campo estéril y puede constituir la forma de acceso a experiencias trascendentales y nuevos modos de entender e interpretar nuestra relación con el cosmos y la interrelación entre todos los seres, las cosas y las fuerzas invisibles de la naturaleza.

Renee Ruin has been a respected blogger in fashion, music and the arts both internationally and locally. She has featured and interviewed fashion designers, artists, musicians, authors and jewellers in her time and is well regarded across all industries as a connoisseur of the noir, avant-garde & the alternative. Her unique interviews and musician curated mixtapes by famous musicians such as Courtney Love and Shirley Manson have earned her high regard amongst the music community and musicians themselves for her forthright and honest journalism and loyalty to the craft.

For over two years, Post-industrial auteurs Kim Larsen and Clay Ruby have been chipping away at this split release, sculpting something truly confounding and unique. While either side of this split sounds almost nothing like the other, where both projects connect is in their ability to combine seemingly incongruous musical elements together seamlessly. Combinations of space and tension, sorrow and frenzy, loss and abundance, all exist within the same short spans of time. Not only are they highly dynamic in terms of mood but also in style, where ingredients from various types of Folk music, Death Industrial, Funeral Doom, Kosmische Musik, Electroacoustic composition and further mutations all clash together in a way that could only make sense on this album. The freedom with which Larsen and Ruby approach their compositions is unparalleled, and yet this music is not just a progressive stew of paradoxes. Rather is it distilled down into a refined, romantic and highly personal consonance.

Transdisciplinary NYC artist Gavilán Rayna Russom beautifully comes into her own with a distinguished solo debut album statement including the voice of Cosey Fanni Tutti and brass arrangements by downtown legend Peter Zummo

After decades exploring her sonic personality in various projects inspired by her deep immersion in NYC’s club and avant-garde scenes, Rayna uses ‘The Envoy’ as a vessel to firm up and convey her personal conclusions on intersections of gender and electronic music. Enriched with complex human experience and key influence from sci-fi writer Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel ’The Left Hand of Darkness’ - a book that strongly resonated with her due to its descriptions of an alien race with multiple sexual characteristics - the album is intended to realign misconceptions of Russom’s prescient early work such as 2005’s ‘The Days of Mars’ LP for DFA, which arguably foreshadowed a rise of beat-less and more ambiguous urges that are now commonplace in contemporary dance music, yet were at the time lumped in with retro-fetishist trends. With ‘The Envoy’ Russom returns to a 2019 music scene that’s better prepared with the politics of an emerging new world, and thus readied for her ideas to take hold in the public consciousness.

Entwining Russom’s perspectives on gender, the occult, and spirituality, and how they relate to the body and music’s healing properties, ‘The Envoy’ clearly yet ambiguously expresses the artist’s concerns in nine interrelated parts. Practically devoid of percussion, but full of body-moving polyrhythmic pattern, the pieces spill out of the lines of any typically imposed “grid”. Within this loose context, porous to the chaos of noise, Russom smudges a blend of analogue and digital synths to connote an elusive sense of self, encouraging the listener to navigate the music’s curves and silhouettes by instinct. 

Employing the fluid potential of electronic music at its most fundamental in a way that loops right back to the glyding suspense of her prized early work, even literally incorporating elements of long form solo recordings made in the late ‘90s in the wake of Russom’s psych/noise band Soma.

Unanchored by kicks, yet pulsing in its own ways, the album flows with an underlying elegance from Cosey Fanni Tutti’s spellbinding recital of Russom’s text in ‘Kemmer’, set to an organic, orgiastic writhe of arps and stressed noise, and on thru the free-floating organ scape of ‘Envoy’, to acknowledge more grimly industrial impulses with ‘Strength out of the Dark’ and also a towering highlight of the album in ‘Discipline of Presence’, where Russom’s throbbing mass is hauntingly illuminated by plangent brass arrangement from Peter Zummo (key Arthur Russell collaborator). The 10 minute ‘Winter’ then wraps it all up under a titular reference to Ursula K Le Guin’s novel, placing Russom as a filament of solo piano-playing light within the cold expanse of NYC.
