Disquiet Junto Project 0369: Final Solo

I loved the track by Tunnelwater https://soundcloud.com/user-524526704/disquiet0368?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0368 using Ryan Scott Mattingly's track

it evoked someone trapped alone in a decrepit listening station on the edge of the desert during a brutal sandstorm, listening to the fading signal of a guitar on the radio as the storm whipped around outside. I dropped the track into Ableton Live, added some limiting, and then added guitar with reverb, plus EQ to isolate mids (I used an Epiphany Joe Pass model, a wonderfully spooky sounding guitar). The melody line is heavily improvised but inspired by the ghost chords that seem to emerge from the shadows of the underlying tracks.

The road home

I used Disquietude (by gentil & encym) as my "final" piece. I was really moved by it, and hope that I was able to add some finality to it's fragile beauty. I used a kind of reverse string patch in Arturia Pigments and thought the tones sat nicely. It was a pleasure to work with, so many thanks to the original artists.

#disquiet0369 Restive

I selected the jam by Alanza (left channel, https://soundcloud.com/aalanzaa/disquiet-0367-trio-initiate-monosynth-study) and Calytrix (right channel, https://soundcloud.com/lcalytrix/a-study-in-euclidean-dynamics) and added my track to the center to create this asynchronous trio. I continued the frenzied pace of the duet with an arpeggiated Z3TA+2 program in sync with the rhythm of the other two tracks. I performed some of the modulations in real time, others I added afterwards.

Existing track was already perfect but I could hear a piano slowly fading in, so that's what I added. 
I just made a simple repeated piano part using a VST piano - The Maverick (Native Instruments). I cut the highs and lows and put it in mono to try to leave space for everything. 
Added a VHS effect (AfroDJMac)to everything to make it feel nice and floating...

Euclidian Monosynth Party (Disquiet0369)

My contribution to the beautiful, haunting duo by @howthenightcame and @ikjoyce. I recently gathered up some old tape machines that have been (literally) gathering dust in my attic and brought them to the studio to clean up and use for creative projects. My Portastudio MF-P01 creates this beautiful, shimmery warble to the high end, even after cleaning the heads. I recorded several different improvisations over the duo directly into the Portastudio with my 69 Telecaster Thinline and recorded the tape into Pro Tools via a True P-Solo preamp. I added some Valhalla Vintage Verb after aligning and comping in PT.

I then decided to try a Basinski/Lucier approach and recorded the output of PT back into the Portastudio, repeating this process six times to degrade the recording futher. Each subsequent pass has more 'verb applied. I helped the degradation along by manually flanging the cassette.

Disquiet Junto Project 0369: Final Solo
The Assignment: Record the final third of a trio, adding to a pre-existing track, based itself on a prior pre-existing track.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the third in a sequence that explores and encourages asynchronous collaboration. This week you will be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0368). Note that you are finishing a trio: you’re creating the third part of what two previous musicians created. Keep this in mind.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to a pre-existing track. First, however, you must select the piece of music to which you will be adding your own music. There are more than 50 tracks in all to choose from, most as part of this SoundCloud playlist:

To select a track, you can listen through all that and choose one, or you can use a random number generator. (Note: it’s perfectly fine if more than one person uses the same original track as the basis for their piece.)

Step 3: Record a short piece of music, roughly the length of the piece of music you selected in Step 2. The source track should have one musical line running in the left channel and another in the right. You should pan your addition, the final third of this trio, in the center. When composing and recording your part, do not alter the original pieces of music at all. To be clear: the track you upload won’t be your piece of music alone; it will be a combination of the track from Step 2 and yours.

Step 4: Also be sure, when done, to make the finished track downloadable, because it may be used by someone else in a subsequent Junto project.

Background: One concept behind this project is “triadic awareness,” which comes from an idea I learned about when I was reading a book by Frans de Waal, the primate scientist. The concept correlates nicely with such ideas as “ambient awareness” and “parallel productivity” that have long been underlying concepts in the Disquiet Junto projects. Writing with Molly Embree, de Waal has defined “triadic awareness” as “the ability to understand relationships of others independently of one’s own involvement.”

Missing Link featuring MtnViewMark-Bits and anoddhue (disquiet0369)

process: 

i listened to the tracks in the playlist until i found one that seemed suitably creepy. when this one came up, my partner said "oooh, that's creepy", and i agreed

then i listened to it and decided on adding a higher-register instrument since the bass and mids seemed pretty full

i then chose a "choir" preset on my korg R3 and modified it to add some bitcrushing, tape delay, an LFO, and some other effects to make it sound more distorted and eery, to complement the existing sounds.

i played the track again a few times, improvising over it until i had an idea of what i would play during the beginning, middle, and end, including modifying effects on the fly.

i then recorded my part. afterwards, i doubled the track that i had recorded with another track an octave lower but much quieter, to fill in some of the high-mids in the center of the stereo range, and mixed the two tracks to one.

kastle mass ritual [disquiet0369]

Adding a third track to the Disquiet Junto collaboration with gentil and Total Energy. Inspired by the ambience of their two combined tracks, I wanted to lay in something cinematic, building on some of the shifts and tension points. I did this as a Logic project: beatmapped a programmed drum for additional percussion that fades in and out, used electric piano and mellotron sounds, and some arpeggiated mallets from the Alchemy synth.

The bass is built from Operator in Ableton, played on a Launchpad Pro, with aftertouch mapped to the filter so that I could be a bit expressive while playing. I added reverb to have it match the feel, but not as much as the others, so it sits in front, despite being the low end.

The Wind In The Lavender (disquiet0369)

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
