Rain

Reading Frances Shelley's biographical story, you can't help but feel inspired. Now, in her early 70s, this neo-classical pianist's and composer's roots go back to being a rebel and a romantic from a very young age. "I can tell many tales from my days as a wild child in 60s London; from working with David and Angie Bowie in the early 70s, the 10 years I spent travelling the world as a fashion model followed by a life-changing stint in rehab in 1981 (before it became fashionable!)” she jokes. “To being a single mother and starting a successful event business in my home.” A decade ago, Shelley decided to pursue her passion for music, and now, multiple years and self-released albums later, she's been signed to Manners McDade, the composer agency and publishing house for Nils Frahm, Caitlyn Aurelia Smith, Poppy Ackroyd. Shelley captures the stories of her eventful life through beautifully layered keys, gently orchestrated arrangements, and carefully measured dose of electronic post-processing, to create atmospheres that swoop in with warm winds of her sonic valley and raise your spirits to fantastic heights. The eleven pieces on her upcoming album, Songs Of Possibility, are also influenced by the events of the last year, "travelling through realms of regret, grief and loss, towards optimism and a sense of excitement for living." In these unprecedented times, we've all found a moment to ask ourselves of 'what it is,' and more importantly of 'what can be'. In this reflection, we'll find a new way to begin. In Shelley's case, it is a dream of music.

Instantané (The Cakemaker Original Movie Theme)

So… this is slightly awkward… When it comes to promoting my very own music, I seem to be at loss for words. And yet, I accept that self-promotion is part of every composer’s journey, at the end of each release. This album has been in the making for a very long time. In fact, it was complete before I even left New York, and I’ve been “sitting on it”, afraid to let it out, too weak to let it breathe. And yet here it is, fulfilling the unavoidable and at times desirable closure to something I meant to leave behind.

Beneath the dark veil of the night, covered in an intoxicating somber solitude, somewhat sorrow and slightly sweet, ‘Dislodged’ is a place of isolation, melancholy, and a bit of heartache. Composed and intended to be listened to as the second half to the ‘Unhinged’ mini-album, this intimate recording of my beloved instrument explores the outer reaches of spatial and reductionist pianism, occasionally echoed by the song of a lonely cello, contributing to the detachment, displacement, and dislocation of a damper pedal, controlling the felt rail which muffles the hammers against the strings. This is where my music lives…

The ten-piece mini-album, beginning with the same-titled “Dislodged” track, which is being premiered exclusively today on Headphone Commute, is out on November 10th, on 1631 Recordings. Recommended for fans of solo piano music, and my all-time favorite composers who inspire me, such as Nils Frahm, Otto A. Totland, Julien Marchal, Goldmund, Dustin O’Halloran, Fabrizio Paterlini, and Sophie Hutchings, and many, many more…

About "Parachute":
"Parachute" comes from the french words "parer" which means to prevent and "chute" which is the fall. This is exactly what I wanted to express with this composition. Sometimes we get overwelmed by the difficulties in our life but there is always somebody we can reach for help. These are often our loved ones, and they can prevent us from falling. We are not alone. Let's remember that.
