The Hollywood Arcade return with another anthem from an imagined time. With a view to writing songs that tell one story while offering a greater meta textual commentary, Digital Breakdown is a love song about a video game character that falls in love with the person playing the game. But beyond that initial listen the song offers an examination of an unhealthy relationship, where the manipulated still yearns for the attention of the manipulator. In a world dominated by technology and social media, where relationships end by simply cutting off connections, Digital Breakdown gives voice to an all too familiar experience.

Demopgraphically, botanically (in ornitholgical terms) and musically not quite correctly orchestrated, it reflects just what I feel when looking at this monument. Nature, geology and millions of years of erosion, weathering, continental drift produce such wonderful things. 

Strange...I can't help but think of the movie "Picnic at Hanging Rock"...and Mrs. Appleyard.

Uluru (Secrets)

The grave chapel in Visby where I recorded my music is a special place to me. It's an octagonal building from the late 19th century that draws inspiration from Gothic architecture, with high vaulted ceilings and stone walls that create a unique acoustic environment.

During my recording session, I used vintage Coles 4038 microphones to capture the full depth and warmth of the chapel's acoustic environment. These microphones are known for their ability to capture the nuances of acoustic instruments with clarity and warmth, making them a perfect choice for recording in this unique space.

Prior to my recording session, I had often walked by the chapel and admired its architectural design, but I had never been inside before. Stepping inside for the first time was an inspiring experience, as the resonance of the space gave my playing a new life and created a sense of intimacy and connection that was truly special. Even the distant sounds of traffic outside added a unique dimension to the recording, reminding me of the world beyond the chapel walls.

Sergei Rachmaninoff: Prelude in C Sharp Minor, Op. 3 No. 2. 

Played by me with my Korg SGProX digital stage piano controlling Yamaha Montage 8. The piano preset: Yamaha Montage CFX Stage. It sounds even better than my 2005 Motif ES synthesizer's piano sound which was already quite impressive. 

Played substantially slower than many pro players and e.g. the honourable Mr. Rachmaninoff himself on one recording (it may be also that I prefer this piece to be played a little slower than it is usually played). I got some speed however somewhere in the middle part.. I played it a lot faster however when I was young and didn't have to think about tomorrow. Because that's what this Prelude is about (much like the Scriabine etude Op. 8 No. 12): you really have to play it like there would be no tomorrow, so to speak, meaning, among other things, that you cannot think about some "secondary" things like hand injuries..

I learned this prelude initially in the 1990's at the time when also the piano movie "Shine" was released (the movie definitely was an inspiration). I practiced it countless hours with my Korg M1 synthesizer which was indeed not the best machine for this kind of piano music.  This was one of the first classical piano pieces I ever learned and, since I have learned it by myself without receiving any formal piano training whatsoever, this warrants the following conclusion: Anything is possible, remember that!

This is my Master's Degree thesis piece, recorded at Fox's Newman Scoring Stage by musicians contracted by Encompass Music Partners.

This piece is very close to my heart. I weaved in some themes I wrote in the past, shining a little light on simple beauty and honoring how far I've come.

A former San Francisco 49er Offensive Lineman, Eric now composes and produces music in the epic, cinematic, and ambient genres. His compositions are, by design, ultra melodic and follow a hybrid orchestral style similar to film composers Hans Zimmer and James Horner, and epic cinematic artist Two Steps From Hell.

Eric lives in Austin, TX, with his wife Emily and their two young daughters, both aspiring musicians :)
