This Mixtape is a compilation of tracks produced by the participates of the 'Take it from the bird - creating music inspired by the Superb Lyrebird' workshop I lead for Unthinking / Unlearning - an online laboratory and residency, a part of the Year of Germany in Russia 2020/21 and collaboration between Klammklang label, Sound Studies and Sonic Arts (M.A.) at the Universität der Künste Berlin and Sound Art and Sound Studies (M.A.) at HSE Art and Design School, Moscow.

‘The Superb Lyrebird’ is an Australian Native bird, which is capable of mimicking natural and synthetic sounds from its natural environment — Participants created their own music sampling biorhythms and timbres from an animal sound open-access archive.

Take it from the bird - creating music inspired by the Superb lyrebird U/U workshop mix tape

Antifesto is a creative alias of Bert-Jan Zuiderduin, a Dutch composer and sound-designer who doubles as a psychotherapist in private practice and at a human rights charity in London.

Bert-Jan originally studied Art and Media Technology at the University of Utrecht before going on to study composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. As greatest influences he cites Conlon Nancarrow and Morton Feldman. 

Through his later psychotherapy studies and practice, Bert-Jan stumbled across Carl Jung’s theory of the Transcendent Function, which describes a dialectic transformative process very much akin to his own way of writing. In essence, this theory describes two opposing forces joining to create a third. 

Bert-Jan’s work juxtaposes often contrasting ideas or even techniques. Makes use of extremely structured as well as completely improvised or accidental material. Another characteristic is the simultaneous occurrence of repetition and continuous change as has also been explored in minimalist music.

Previously, Bert-Jan worked more conceptually, for example his work ‘Beauty Sleepers’ existing of field recording made in Teylers Museum, Haarlem, where the composer attempted to bring back to life the ‘sleeping’ scientific instruments from bygone ages. There was even an electronic homage to Frank Zappa (‘20.000.000 False Moustaches Can’t be Wrong’).

Felicity Mangan is an Australian sound artist and composer based in Berlin, Germany.  In different situations such as solo performances and collaborative projects, Felicity samples and plays her field recordings and found sounds to create quasi-bioacoustic music.

Felicity has released several solo publications, one on Longform Editions titled Stereo’frog’ic, a play on the word stereophonic –  presenting a sound piece, crafted from found recordings of frogs, insects and other ‘vocal’ animals wavering about in a stereo field. As well as Creepy Crawly (Mappa Editions) and Bell Metal Reeds (One Instrument). More recently Wet on Wet (Klangklamm/Warm Winters Ltd.), Train Tracks Recorded and Editing by Felicity Mangan (Possible Motive) and a single Körner Park (Care of Editions). As well as a former duo project release with Stine Janvin Native Instrument - Camo (Shelter Press). Felicity has presented projects in many different settings including Technosphärenklänge CTM/HKW, Sonic Act Academy and Sound design for 100 Climate Conversation for the Power House Museum, Sydney, Australia.

Anton Anishchanka is an electroacoustic music composer and traditional music researcher. Combining field recordings, synthesizers, reel to reel tapes and archival sounds, he creates his own musical narratives within the ambient, electroacoustic, and experimental genres. Most of his projects are about deep listening experience.In his own production, he uses reel to reels, acoustic instruments and synthesizers. As well as field recordings made during sound expeditions, live and archival recordings of Belarusian folk songs and melodies, which are attributed to the origins and speak for themselves.
It is difficult to give a specific genre description of the music, but it is somewhere in the boundaries of drone and ambient with elements of traditional music.
