I've always just discovered and developed whatever interesting music happens to arise and have never contrived to combine different languages of music. Surely music itself takes care of this?... and that's what makes it fun!

Folkweave

An excerpt from an original composition for folk band playing: flute, acoustic guitar, bass guitar and drums. The title came from imagining a scenario in Norse mythology where Gudrun's decision holds the fate of all in the balance... 'Fancy' in this sense then means 'decision' or 'leaning'. She eventually tips the scales...

Gudrun's Fancy

The opening of a little piece for flute and (minimal) acoustic guitar. I wanted to write / compose / discover a series of melodies for the flute that would almost stand alone - needing very little accompaniment. An interesting thing to do: as the melodies have to be distinctive, have real character... and somehow have to be self-contained.

This is a sample of a composition for acoustic guitar, flute and violin. There are six 'elements' to this piece. This one has an interesting melody (or thread) which manages to deftly weave through some interesting chords and key changes!... or was it the thread that made those chords and changes happen?

Elements - Part 5

Elements is an original composition for Acoustic guitar, flute and violin. All the parts are very distinctive and often flow through; one to the next; expressing various qualities - hence the title: 'Elements' meaning 'qualities'. It was written without planning... Are you a composer or a bud ready to flower...? ...then burst forth without choice in power and beauty. Music is this.

Elements-Part Three

This is a se(le)ction from a composition for acoustic guitar, flute and violin. It all began when I (we) had recently moved to Ireland (Republic of) and visited a nearby town called Bandon (county Cork). We were just wandering about when a tune appeared in my mind. This became the opening section from which this later part grew... 'The Dream' is reminiscent of English Elizabethan music and some of the counter melody sounds quite like a particular tune composed and frequently used in court music... This wasn't intentional but happened naturally during the unfolding process of composition.

Bandon - The Dream

This is an excerpt from an original composition for classical guitar and flute. Although this sample appears to end naturally the music does continue to develop in many more interesting directions. If you listen simply and carefully (or even without care?!) you may begin to sense and understand how this music has come to be called 'Branches'. Perhaps I should say no more... in which case you will go now and listen... but for those who are interested in what the composer has to say: the branches in the title not only relates to trees and the larger creatures (particularly birds) that live among them but also to the nature of creativity, music and composition which also grows tree-like; branching out in many directions, nurtured and rooted in nature.
